Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

I've had my 91 Trans am for a year and a half now and love EVERY square inch of it. I have ridden in many cars in my time, probably 40+ different models of vehicles and have yet to find one that is more comfortable than my 91!! In my opinion these cars are PERFECT cruisers. (What do you think?) Theres nothing better than takin the T-tops off and goin for a ride...Even with the price of gas nearly $4.00 I just cant resist! Seems like all kids care about nowadays is if their car is "fast". Not me. If you drive too fast life will pass you buy, so take the t-tops off and enjoy the ride

I agree, my 88 is almost as comfortable as my 04 Grand Prix. But then again I am a bit biased towards my 88

it really is. and i rarely ride with the t tops on.

the only car i have ever sat in that was more comfortable was my 88 LTD. but it had the softest suspension to help out. my TA suspension is a lil rough and the suspension is on the back seat... for now.

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

What I tell the people with the newer faster cars is...I'd rather have my slow old car than a fast new car. So that's how I roll. And yeah these cars are cruisers. maybe its because when I sit in it. Its almost like laying down. Relaxes ya! Like sitting in a lazy boy w/o all the thich padding.

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

I agreeee! I have driven for hours in my 91 firebird, just because I could...and it never gets old and never gets uncomfortabale. But the comfiest car that I have ever ridden in that also looks good is our '95 Impala SS...now that is a car you could just camp out in.

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

I've driven for hours in mine, love it, but let's not kid ourselves, it doesn't hold a candle to a newer car in terms of comfort.

It's a driver's car--the seating position is low, it's loud, it rattles, and the seats aren't the most supportive. Getting in and out isn't the easiest either, given the low position. I can think of many cars that are more comfortable as a daily.

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

Gotta agree with puma on this one. Those of you who say the cars are extremly comfortable just have not clocked enough hours driving em yet....
I also dislike the rattling, but my sound system takes care of that problem.

I recently replaced the shocks+struts & that really improved ride quality. But at the end of the day car is terrible for long trips, my freaking legs always start to cramp up like a **** whenever I drive 3hrs or longer.

I had an 08 Buick Lacrosse/w leather and all the other goodies & I fell in love with how roomie it was but I hated how damn slow it was.....so I got rid of it.

Don't get me wrong tho, I love my car and I'm in the process of restoring it right now, paint should be done by the end of the week and I'm picking up some odds & ends for the interior tommorow.

The Iroc was my first car and daily drove it till wheels nearly fell off for five years.....

& BTW I'm a pretty small dude 5'9 125lbs....I feel bad for you guys that are 6'0 up that own these cars. One of my buddys is 6'3 & I can remember him hitting his head on my t-top a few times in the past when I went over a bump in the road. lol funny stuff.

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

I am truly the most comfortable in my camaro! My Lincoln was spacious and had all the comfort and luxury, but after a while of driving the leather seats ate me up.
The vet is a comfortable car but no leg room. The 97 Jag is a super comfy car and a nice cruiser also.. I really think it is about the way you feel in these style cars!!!

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

Working at dealerships I've driven a lot of new cars, and I just can't agree that they are more comfortable than my Firebird. Looking at one of these new cars I see how bulky they appear to be on the outside, then you get in and its like being locked in the cockpit of a fighter jet, theres no room to move! I've cruised in my bird for hours and have to say its the most comfortable car I've driven, I can agree about the getting in and out cause its so low, but once your in its like a big ol' easy chair. I've actually slept in my Firebird, and I can't say I didn't enjoy it.

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

I can understand puma's comment.
The difference is mainly in the seats I guess.

I have an RS and the seats are not supportive at all.
Now I recently sat in a T/A and love the seats (the ones with all the adjustment possibilities and funny headrests) and can imagine that a several hour cruise in such a seat is far more comfortable.

The space in the passenger seat is great, untill the footwell is filled with an ECM and a notebook that is.

I'm 6'0" and must say that without headliner there is plenty of headroom.
I'm currently looking for somewhat deeper seats which will allow me to sit upright. The RS seats are too high (and too heavy, and do not offer any support etc. )

I Like the seats in mine. Ive driven a 4 hour round trip before with no problems. Not nearly as nice as my Durango but still a nice ride. Of course after 13 years ive nearly replaced everything on the car so its practically brand new again.

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

the best seats were cloth seats from a 99 Firebird that i installed in my 91 Z28... they were great... my vette is comfortable but boy does it get hot inside there, i really need to take the interior out and add some insulation. my moms 94 grand prix coupe has the bucket seats... now thats a lazy boy on wheels! drove my gf's 04 grand cherokee 12 hours straight from jersey to tennesse and that wasnt half bad either

I have sat passenger once in my car and it is HUGE! It feels like I'm sitting in my yard in one of the coumfiest chairs in the world!

Like most have said though my car is infact way coumfier than pretty much every other car I have sat in. My moms 08 Lincoln doesnt even compare! The seats have over time become so cushony and since they are on the ground and the seats are already in a reclined position it's like sitting in a recliner. I have actually considered pulling one of these chairs just to use for gaming or relaxing around the house.

ive had my car for almost 12 years so I think I have managed to log a few hours in it.

These new cars sit in you there like you driving a truck. I dont like it. I like sitting low. Im a big boy and I have no problems getting out of my car.

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

I have been in quite a few cars as well as any other person, and the performance bucket seats feel great if you're just in and out of it a ton... but on a long cruise they tend to hurt my back. I don't particularly like the design of our seats, but they are the most comfortable to sit in for long drives. A little boring, but I'm okay with that I suppose.

I have twin L/S Conteurs in my car. There are bolster adjustments for the seat and seat back, as well as adjustments for the lumbar and thigh areas. Furthermore, the driver's seat sits on a six-way electric track. You'd think with all those adjustment features, comfort wouldn't be an issue. It is (I'm 5'6" on a good day), but then I'm not the youngest man on the board either. IMO, comfort and thirdgen aren't words that are generally associated. On the other hand, do I find driving my car pleasurable? You betcha.

I put some 98 Firebird seats in my car... made a HUGE difference. It feels like MORE of a driver's car, but it hugs you in the seat and holds you in all the right places.

The only beef I have is getting in and out, because I refuse to pull on the steering wheel or the dash pad.I have to pull on the a-pillar or the seat shoulder.

Funny you mention that, I stand 5'5" so for me no seats, no matter how fantastic the side bolsters, etc. are, I'll never feel them because I just don't fill the seat out enough at 130-135 lbs...on the plus side this means seats (especially leather), never, ever wear the slightest bit in my cars.

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

Comfortable 3rd gen? Puuhlease. Guys that are claiming comfort here surely were born after 1980, and would also call a Sea-Doo comfortable.

New cars with new shocks and new seat springs are comfortable, in fact great improvements have been made on this front in just the last 5 years.

I have a brand new, comfortable car sitting in the driveway, but on a nice sunny day I pick the 1988 GTA for a driving thrill every time.

i love the seats in these cars, iv never felt the way the bird seats feel but iv felt the 4th gen seats and my 3rd gen seats i like them and i think they are comfortable, although my mom and grandpas 08 impalas handle well but i think mines more comfortable in the long run, the passenger side is comfortable but i hate the little dip where the cat is...im not a small guy either on this site im 6,2 and i have no problems getting in and out. although if im sore or have been driving awhile ill admit i have to use the door or the roof to help me get out. worst parts getting my legs from out under the wheel

Nice man!

And to the other guy. I was born after 1980 so that deffinately means I can no way judge whether a car is comfortable or not. For sure. Because I can't have an opinion. Sweet.

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

i love cruisin in my t/a. although i fear for my car form other stupid drivers on the road lol. i find it comfortable, but bumpy lol. i dont really think my car is that slow, i think it can compete pretty well, especially once i get the 3.73's in it'll do pretty well. i also put new firebird seats (2k1) and theyre really nice. unfortunately my color blindness lead me to getting faded tan seats instead of gray like i wanted, but thats alright im gonna wrap them in leather anyway lol

Couldnt agree more!!! I keep my T-Tops off almost all summer and love to go for long rides. I love the seats and would drive this car across the country without any hesitation (from a comfort standpoint--maybe not a reliability standpoint!).

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

I almost want to just put my stock seats back in the IROC, they really are some of the most comfortable cars around.

Then again, I wasn't born before 1980, so I have no opinion.

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

As much as I love driving my Vert. With GTA seats, koni's and the suspension setup right. I really do not mind jumping into my 04 GTO. FWIW I'm 6'4" and that might have something to do with it.. lol

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

I just started driving my RS on Sunday and man, I am impressed. My DD is a 2010 CTS sedan and while I love the comfort, reliability, and luxury of the CTS, the 91 RS just makes me feel so good to drive. The steering is nice and tight and the seats just hug you. The car is also surprisingly roomy and open inside and I LOVE the T-TOPS! This car is so much tighter and squeak-free than any convertible I've had and you still get the open-air feeling. Also, the exhaust work we've done makes this car sound just right cruising down the road. Plus, people have been gushing with compliments about my clean RS and who doesn't enjoy that? I LOVE my RS!!!

I highly dissagree!

While it's perfect when I'm alone, having my girlfriend in the car is nothing but a fearfest.

From the time she dropped a chocolate bar between my seats and tried to drag it back out the side against my carpet to the time she was spilling her tacobell. Eating ice cream and rubbing her dirty shoes against my carpeted door panels.

God, nothing I hate worse than the stupid way she has to cross her legs, because her shoes are always going to mark up my dash and door panels

Sounds like yours is broken. I would look for a replacement if I were in the same situation.

I'm quite happy with mine. She even insisted on helping me clean the undercarriage. 8 Hours straight of dirt and grime, and then she helped me repaint the undercarriage as well.

I agree. I am a female and I would never let someone so disrespectful in my car. My cars are my babies. I wash them frequently, keep them well-maintained, and never park next to anyone or anywhere the car may be obviously endangered (near shopping carts, in the ghetto, etc). I've always been this way, even when I drove beater cars. I also make sure I can speak intelligently about them and am familiar with the engine bay. My parents taught me nothing but respect for cars; they treat theirs the same.

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

I've driven on a couple of 10-12 hour trips before and didn't have any issues. I wouldn't go so far as to say it was the most comfortable I've ever been, but it was comfortable. I think it depends on a lot of factors with the car (seat type/materials/position) and the driver (size/preference, etc.).

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

my g/f will sometimes get my car a little dirty, but getting some sand or dirt in the car or something is better than most of my guy friends. last time i went paintballing with them the one put his paintball gun on the hood of my 09 silverado (didnt even get it 6 months ago) and now it has a scratch in the hood and i am angry about it lol. oh and the thoughtless kid kicked dirt all over the truck, broke paintballs inside and dismissed the towell i put on the seat for every dirty person to sit on and instead used it to clean his paintball gun and got dirt all over. kinda mad lol.

i trust my gf in my car more than my guy friends is all im saying lol. unless someone sees the time and money and effort put into a project car, they just wont understand

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

To the OP, you havent been in many late model vehicles, no way around this or your just trying to stir the pot. 3rd gens were never known to be a comfy cruiser when new and are dont hold a candle to compared to todays crop of vehicles. There alot of factors that go into forming an opinion on this topic ( alot of posters have brought this up) but in general, they are not floaty, cumfy cars with forgiving suspension. They DO however handle well and respond to tighter suspension parts well.

I was 6'4" at the time I purchased my IROC and weighed 190#. I was to tall for the car and always felt weird laying the seat back to get into a comfy driving position. 20 some years later I am 6'5" and close to 300# and realize that the car I still love is a pain in the a$$ to drive more than 60 miles. Over the two decades I have owned the car I ferreted out the squeeks and rattles and that isnt what bothers me. After installing Eibach springs, Koni shocks and struts etc, the door sill is only 4" above the ground. The dash is also to low, my shoulders hang well past the center console and there is the lame hump in the passenger side floor for the CAT, same as a 4th gen.

You give up alot to drive these things, dont shy away from that. They fun cars though and do handle extremely well if set up properly.

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

If you are in the market for a cruiser car that is affordable, handles well and goes like stink with mods look at an 05 - 06 GTO. My brother has one and with less than 8K in mods it delivers. You wont get the same with a 3rd gen.

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

Yea on the subject of respecting our cars, its unbelieveable how some people treat our vehicles . I once had a friend who had just eaten some ultra-greasy fries from some greasy-spoon restaurant and he got in and immediately commented on how nice my dash was. He continued to run his hands all down the length of my dashboard and I could see the grease lines in the sunlight haha! I immediately cleaned it off as SOON as I got home. My biggest annoyance is when people get in the passenger seat and clomp their shoes on the kick panels and cupholder though by-far.

Re: Extremely comfortable cars...who woulda guessed?

I have the original seats in my 86 firebird SE. I just took a 10 hour drive a month ago. I gotta say that my bird was better on my back than any other car I've taken long trips in. I'm also 6'3" 230 so I do have to recline my seat slightly if the t's are on, but thats been my preferred driving position for the last 15 years or so. I was thinking of going 4th gen seats (I've read they sit an inch or so lower), but only if they are a comfortable!
