no front tag required

there is emissions, but there not extremely strict, although there not too lax either,

the nearest ski resort is about 3 hours away, the nearest beach is about 100 yards from my house. The nearest populated beach with lifeguards and everything is about 25 minutes down the road.

Car: too many ...
Hawaii!!!

Hheheh, sorry bout that, thought we were being left out :/ We do have a track here on O'ahu. Its called Hawaii Raceway Park and we got an alright 1/4 mile strip. They also have areas for SCCA and for people to practice drifting. Some of the other islands also have a 1/4 mi track. But anyway ...

Front Plate - Yes
Smog Control - Nope, we have worse ... RECONSTRUCTION
Beach - 30 minutes from anywhere in all directions!! hahah

Reconstruction is: Any modification to any street driven vehicle. So to get Reconstruction (or Recon as we call it) you need to goto a state run facility (sort of like the smog control places they have in cali) and they fully check out your car and either pass or fail you depending on if your mods are 'legal.' Nobody ever passes recon because the legal limit you can mod is ridiculous. Its a $55 ticket if you get caught on the streets with no recon. I had 17 no recon tickets last year for my truck. HEHEHEH!!!!!!!

Florida residents: isn't the humidity a problem as far as vehicle rust? Is it as humid in the center of the state as on the coast? (you can see what my main priorities are as far as where I move after I graduate college: car car car).

Well, I'll be the second Virginian, but I live on the other side of the state. Front tags are a must. Emissions? Never known anybody that has had them checked. And yes, there is a beach within 45 minutes of Hampton Roads and there are some ski resorts in the mountains about 3 hours from Hampton Roads. You should move here, it's great! Well, it's not great enough for me to stay here, I want to move to North Carolina..

Friendswood, Texas (Between Houston and Galveston)

1)Plates-Yes Cops especially like to pick on you if you have a good looking car.

2)Emissions-Yes

3)Beaches-30 drive but Galveston Beach sucks! You could get disease if you get water up your nose! If you walk down the beach, you'll most likely get stung by a washed up jelly fish.

I have a question for you guys. If a car is in OverDrive and is doing 55MPH, will it spit out more harmful, air polluting emissions than the same car doing 70MPH in OverDrive?

Please help me on this one, since they're lowering speed limits on I-45 freeway to 55MPH! There reason being, that if the air here does not pass Federal guidelines, the Feds will cut funding for road construction. Another thing they're doing id making it illegal to mow your grass in the morning!?!?! I'd say we speed all we want and make road construction stop!!! Give them a brake!!! I don't want to get off the subject but it was eating me up. If any thirdgener's out there live in the Houston/Galveston area, please respond.

Oregon (pronounced: Or-E-Gun)

Dewey was incorrect above in saying that front plates aren't required. They are, and I have the citation to prove it Only one ticket in 2 decades isn't too bad though. Emissions like Dewey said.

Mt. Hood is only 50 miles from Portland, and has the only year round skiing in the lower 48 states. It is the home of the US Skiing Team. Other quality skiing throughout the state.

Pacific Ocean on the west side, the beautiful Columbia River Gorge, Crater Lake (deepest lake in the world), 50 miles of sand dunes for 4 wheeling & motorcycles, lots of great hiking, fishing, hunting, boating, etc. If you like to ride your bike in the city, Portland is your place (personally I prefer to run the bicyclists over with my dump truck ).

Oh yeah, and we only get about half as much rain as Seattle down here.

Hawaii here...

Yes front plate, Nice sandy beaches 5 mins away, no skiing.

Yes Emissions, at least for me, failed for leaky cat, d@mn inspection rules...

I however don't have my front plate on the front. I think it looks tacky, but when the day comes, and the cop tells me to put it on, I will.

Untill then, I'll continue to violate the law...

What I find interesting about mandated front license plates is that (most) southern states do not require it, but (most) northern states do. This is a general rule of thumb which has some exceptions; Texas being one and California being another (if you consider CA "southern").

Check this out. The following is a list of states that I know. Southern states that do not require front plates:

Arizona
New Mexico
Texas (oops, an exception)
Louisiana
Mississippi
Alabama
Georgia
Florida

Nothern states that do require front plates:

Washington
Oregon
Idaho
Montana
South Dakota
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Illinois
Michigan
Ohio
Pennsylvania
New York

Here's what I've come up with: If they want to lower emissions this equation, time(on freeway) vs. engine RPM at 55MPH vs. harmful emissions output , will have to be less than this equation, time vs. engine RPM at 70MPH vs. harmful emissions output. Also, come summer time, people will start mowing grass in the afternoon and have heatstrokes and die! The death rate is bad enough as it is.

I will add to jm91rs Ohio post,

We do require front plate and it depends on the officer’s mood as to the enforcement rule.

No emissions testing in my area.

Beaches are out my door and skiing resorts as close as 1 hour (in the winter).

emissions laws are not state law, they are city law. Here in dallas county, emissions is required, front lp is required, but i think thats state law, and a ski resort in texas? I think you know the answer to that...

Front plate in IL- but I've never had one-I don't diplay it in window or carry it in my car, and I don't care. If they have any reason to pull me over it is because of speeding-not plates and when cops have pulled me over they have never said a thing.
Emissions-totally **** about it
Skiing avail. approx 30 min. (if you want better skiing- its 2 hrs 20 min. away) Beaches within a half an hour or closer.
And you have Chicago (downtown) about 25 min. away-if you can't find it in Chicago-you probably wont find it anywhere else (there is so much to do).

In Florida where I am at (West Coast) We do not need a licence plate on the front of our cars. We do not have emissions checks. And there are beaches everywhere! The closest one is about 5 minutes away. The nicest ones (Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Sarasota etc.) are about 1 hour away. AhHHHHHH! I love Florida

I live in Florida and I have never had a problem with rusting and I live 10 minutes from the beach. I would only see a problem from salt water, but I never had any rusting issues. If you drive around here you wont see any rusty cars. I have never seen cars with rust around here now that I think about it.

Here in Virginia, you supposedly have to have a front plate, as if I care. The beach is 500 yards from my house, the ski resorts are in the Blue Ridge about a 2 hours drive north. I love in Virginia Beach VA,as far as emissions go there are no checks, just a visual to see you got a cat and a muffler and it doesn't have a hole in it.

Beach - 5 minutes to 2 and 20-30min to 4 or 5 more.
Skiing - depends you want local crap mountains pick from 3 all 20 minutes apart. World Class (whistler & Blackcomb) 1 hour 30 min (F-body - 1 hour)

yes to the front plate, local boys wont hound you about it but will use it as an excuess when they want to know what your up too. state troopers get real pissy about it.

no emmsion crap to deal with what so ever, and the beach is 5 mins away on bike.

Well, I saw 3 NY posts... but they're conflicting although all true... So I will clearify the disputes...

Upstate NY: $4 for visual inspection only.
In and around the City: ~$20 for them to put it on the sniffer.

I have plates in front and rear... Only been pulled over for speeding (never ticketed ), and the car is definitely not emissions legal... It will almost pass the visual though... just need a belt for the smog pump now.

Ski resorts all over the place, probably 5 or 6 within 1 hour radius... the beach is a good 3-5 hours depending on what direction I go...

In Virginia, emmisions checks vary on where you live. In Northern VA ( DC area) we have to do our emissions check on a chassis dyno. UGH.

Since I don't see Arkansas anywhere on the list, I'll chime in from Hicksville, USA.

Let's see... NE Arkansas:
1) No front plate required
2) No emissions
3) 10 hours from the beach, I guess 18 from a ski resort.

No front license plate needed.

Emmissions every other year and if your car runs good you can breeze through them. I failed the gas cap test and had to buy a new gas cap last time - no biggie.

Nearest beach for Phoenix or Tucson is Rocky Point, Mexico. Called Puerto Penasco on the map. It takes about 5-6 hours from Phoenix even less from Tucson. Nearest beach in US would be San Diego for Tucson and I think LA and San Diego is about the same from Phoenix but LA takes longer to drive through. Takes about 7 hours from Phoenix, Tucson can probably make to the beaches in San Diego in about 6 hours.
2 hours from SnowBowl north of Flagstaff from Phoenix. Lots of vertical drop for a fairly small ski resort.

future mods:
header to tailpipe replacement and a cold air intake. Then I am just going to leave it alone

Well, I see NO Minnesota posts....

First off, I want outta here...pronto! My only complaint for this state is winter.... can't drive my freakin car for almost half the year!! I guess it gives us time to do major mods without feeling left out from having the car laid up in the garage though......

Anyways:

1. Front Plate: Around Minneapolis St. Paul area: yes. Out in 'the country': nahh (I don't mind since the bumper cover on my GTA is less than pristine behind the plate )

2. Emissions: NOPE. They just got rid of them two years ago!! Statewide! WHOOHOO.. I just titled my car at a friends house outside the Twin City area and I was fine even when they had the Smog ***** here.

3. No Ocean beaches, but we are the land of 10,000 lakes (serious underestimate)!!
Lots of ski resorts from November to March or so, but not in the summer - it gets F'in hot and humid up here!!

Racetracks: We have one 1/8 mile track (Grove Creek) within an hour or so of the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. There is a 1/4 mile track (Rock Falls) about an hour and a half from here in Wisconsin. There is also a 1/4 mile track (Tri-state) that is about three and a half hours from here in Iowa - the nice thing about this track is it is well-known for it's awesome track conditions (traction) - ALL CONCRETE!! - and it is an IHRA track so you can go 11.85 and slower without a cage.....

I might add another required trait for a good place to live, car-wise. Weather. The less weather and 'acts of G0d', the better. ie. - No tornados, no hurricanes, no earthquakes, no snow (which brings the dreaded road-salt - BOOOOO HISSSSSSS), and no rain!! These things are a big factor in my book as I don't want my pride and joy getting destroyed on me, I don't drive my car in the snow, and I HATE driving in the rain - it just makes the car look like a$$ and gets everything dirty......

I plan on moving out of this state when i finish school as well...... I was throwing around ideas of somewhere in Texas.... (Atleast I can go to a NORTH STARS game again grrrrr). We should all band together and create a Thirdgen society.......hehe.........

Indiana.

1. No front license plate required. Even if it were a law...if the cop tries to pull you over you can just casually veer into a cornfield and lose him! (Well, I'll admit the whole cornfield thing is a stereotype, we have more than corn in Indiana, yup...we have green beans too!)

2. No emissions checking here, just good 'ol pollution! I smell like crap after I stand outside my 'Stang, no emissions anymore. In my Formula, I still have all that stuff, so it theoretically could pass the check, if there were one.

3. There is no beach. Well, technically there is, but it's called "Indiana Beach", and it is the crappiest/lamest theme park you could ever visit. In fact the "beach" is actually dirty lake water. No oceans here. Probably a solid 2 days until a beach. Unless you can count lake Michigan.

Hah, I wish. I had to take a run on the chassis dyno for that "modified" IM/240 test that Whitman left us with. There was only a handful (3?) of state inspection centers that were still using the old test. I figured I'd hunt one down if I failed on the new test, but I passed it.

Inspection also lasts -2- years, but registration is per-year. I'm due again for inspection this January... (last time was Jan 2000), lets see if I pass!

Michigan:

DOES NOT REQUIRE FRONT PLATES! I don't know who said that, but here in the State where cars is the number 1 industry, we are sane and don't require stupid front plates.

We do not have emissions tests. I have never had to go through one.

There are many ski resorts around.

I live in minnestoa also, and winters do suck. But I dont complain too much. When winter comes the camaro goes into storage and the big geen chevy truck comes out. Sure the truck isnt as cool as the camaro, buit its nice not having to woory about the car. Plus with a truck in the winter it is alot easier to get throught snow drifts.

Snow sucks unless you have a truck to rip throught it.
