Actually, I just noticed that I took that pic right before I turned my car off, after I had turned the parking light dimmer switch all the way down. I'll have to take another pic tonight after I get home from school WITH the needles lit. It's gonna be a sweet pic, so get ready to drool!

Could someone tell me what size I would need for my 89 RS? I want the violet ones. The dash lights are already purple (as well as the inside turn signal), but I want the dash lights to be brighter, and these look awesome!
So, I was looking at these, they have a very high MCD (60,000), but I don't know if they'll work in my car. I have an '88 firebird...Does the fact that they're 10mm mean anything to me? Do I need smaller? Bigger? Something entirely different..?

One thing you have to watch out for with LEDs and brightness is the viewing angle. A lot of times, sellers of LEDs will say that it has this really high MCD, but the LEDS also have a very narrow viewing angle. The ones you linked to have a 12 degree viewing angle. So using something like that in a instrument cluster gets tricky and might cause a lot of hot spots. Best best for the most even light is to find wider viewing angle LEDs.
I also noticed that the LEDs you link to only have a 20ma max current draw. Another give away that they are narrowing the viewing angle to get the brightness.
I installed red 9-led 194 bulbs in my instrument panel, floor, reading light, and tag light. And, 44mm festoon in my dome from superbrightleds.com, in my '85 Firebird. It was super easy and looks GREAT!!!
It was all direct plug, no mod. whatsoever. All I did was take off the face of the intrument panel and pull the gauges out individually (non-cluster in 85), except for the speedo (I just loosened the face and had to play "Operation w/ a pair of needle nose).
It looks so fresh. And all I spent was about $34 shipped for the bulbs and an hour of my time. This has to be the best/cheapest/easiest customization that you can do to your bird/maro. If I can do it, anyone can.
The lights look kinda orange in the pictures, but believe me they are very red.
The next thing I'm gonna do is put two 9-led festoons in my plexi-glass faced speaker box. Even more red!!!!!! Gotta find the sockets and a switch (probably Auto Zone), and just run the power off my amp. (any experienced suggestions?)
hey man that is awsome ..... ive been wanten to do that but i never new you could..... new to the whole customization thing..... and the plexi glass.... im about to build a sub box... how are you going to put the leds in there.... are u going to drill holes on the top of the plexi glass....????
84 1LE, how did you get the shift console looking that way ? White plastic rather than the yellow one I take it ? Blue tinted plexi glass piece .. and a bright LED ??
The shift window is from a berlinetta. There was a clear plastic lense that went behind the shift indicator window(which is really a thin plastic film). This plastic lense is pretty thick(too thick for non-berli shift plate). So i just made my own lense of the same dimensions, but a little thinner(same thickness as my 84 Zs stock lense/shift window deal.I only used the shift ind from the berli.Eveything else is stock for an 84 camaro(non-berli).As for the lighting its just a super white LED(10mm).Same as the ones in the rest of the interior. The xtra bluish-ness is due to the berlinettas shift indicator(black background & white letters with blue dye behind letters(stock). So it already had a blue look to it.The LED(which gives off a slight blue illumination just enhances the look.I really like it though. It goes with the pioneer deck units OEL display & on my sportster Replay unit.
black car? go red looks cool look up www.besthongkong.com i bought 20 blue led bulet tip 194 buls for 17 some odd dollars total if i can ever get my dash to work then i can put them in but they are ten times brighter.
----------
the turn signal bulbs are hard but the others are all 194 www.besthongkong.com

Reason: Automerged Doublepost
EWWEWWWNOTME bad idea on the white face gauges they look bad and don't always fit exactly. plus they have a wierd tint in the numbers that block out the led light look. ill never buy another one they ruined my dash and now i can't fix it.
Does anyone have photos of RED led illumination in a 91-92 Camaro dash cluster? I would like to try this, but would like to see what yall have used and of course photos of it. There are 4 bulbs that need changed i know, but what ones would be bright enough, and what not. Thanks in advance.
Hey purple 92 ss got your message,
try that site that i quoted and look for any thing with wide bulb (or what the guys at besthonkkong told me) was to try they're new 5 chip 194 bulb (these are the size bulb that camaro uses alot)
my only complain about the bullet tip is that at night they don't show up until pitch black. other than that everything has a blue halo. the problem is that my bulbs are not wide angle so the light didn't disperse through the plexi glass light up part. but it dose look cool. all of the lights are blue in my car except the little yellow led above the ac controls. i cant figure out how to get to it with out breaking something.
I just lit mine up red about 2 weeks ago, I did it for around $20 and its twice as bright as the stock lights, However I used 2000mcd leds and I had to use 2 wired in parallel, a slight pain so you may want to get a higher mcd than that, but all is explained in the tech article. But any idiot with a soldering iron can do it, it took me about 3 hours start to finish. But speaking of soldering irons don't use a gun, I bought one for this project because I thought it'd make it easier than my trusty iron, but couldn't get the darn thing in there. Just my advice from my experience. I plan on putting some more red leds elsewhere inside my car in the near future, I am thinking elsewhere in the dash, in the speakers (non stock speaker covers), door panels, under the dash, light up the back seats a little, I also have a nifty idea with a three way switch to make the dome light switch between red and white light.
if you are refering to the pic with the painted bezel. that is stock in a v-6 dash after i fried the 0-145 this is all i could find cheap and close by i painted my other needals white instead of orange but i haven't decided if i want to take apart the dash yet to put them in. whats your oppinion?
i'm not to sure about the dash out of the three i have only the one is white the others are as you say yellowish but even with those the dash lights up fine the pic with the gauges at the bottom is one of the yellowish dashes and as for the v-6 working with the v-8 they don't the dash picks up the extra two pistons and reads your idle state at 4000 rpms when you hit the throttle the gauge pegs i think if you take a v-8 chip out and swap it with the v-6 dash it might read correctly i haven't tried it because i fried the only v-8 dash.
well i got my red led's in from superbrightleds.com. I ordered the ones that are 5 led's wide view in RED. I will try to get photos of it soon. I also used these led's for the Shift indication lamp and the AC control lamp. I am VERY pleased at how the brighness came out. It is 1000 times better than the regular led's that i had tried before.

I see a few differnt ones on that site. can you link to the ones you used?
Great pictures!! So It would only take a couple hours and about $20?

Well, now that this thread is back from the dead, I got a question . The tech article posted in the earlier pages said that the LEDs can not be dimmed with the stock dimmer switch or they will turn off. Is this true for the direct replacement bulbs?
however red is so unobtrusive its not needed to be dimmed.. really its not super bright compared to what you think it is in the photos. it looks great, dont get me wrong, but its not like it is hurt your eyes birght.
Select LED Color Red Amber White (+ $2.00) Blue (+ $1.00) Green (+ $2.00) UV (+ $1.00)
921-x12 Wedge Base LED bulb
921 Type with 12 LEDs, replaces 194/168/912 wedge base car bulbs
Wide 75 degree beam pattern, non-polarized
measures 1.20 inch long by 0.60 inch diameter $ 3.95
Would these work? I have a 1991 Camaro RS, teal, and my dome lights are in my mirror, can I change these to LED as well? Just give the entire car a nice green glow....
they may, but the reason i went with wide angle was for the guages, the area inside the cluster needs to be wide anle bulbs, because if not it wont reflect bright enough, or so is my experience. those green may work for stuff outside the cluser.. its up to you to try it.
Its really easy to follow the instructions in the tech articles
I did mine red, one of the first things I did to my car, they are brighter than stock even being red. I got my led's off ebay for really cheap. I did two led's per socket. I also used the metallic chrome spray paint on the back of the plate, I originally just left it blue, wasn't bright enough though, the difference was night and day. I will try to post some pics of mine
so wait, how do you install the ones off os superbrightleds.com? same as in the tech article? Can i get some info on this? I'm changing my instrument panel with a 145 soon and i may as well kill 2 things at once
