How hard is it to replace a front 1/4 panel??

I've got a good dent in my right front quarter and am planning on painting the car so now is the time to fix it. But I heard there's welding involved in removing it - not something I really want to get into.

Basically, I want to know if it would make sense to replace it or fix it with bondo.

THANKS!!

i have to replace mine too. the left one one mine...i tried takin it off yesterday but it looked like a PITA. i got all the top bolts out and i went to go for the ones on the bottom, but it looks like the GFX are in the way. everythings so damn covered under there(plus i was layin out in the middle of the street so that didnt help either ) i dont know how many are on the bottom, but you may even have to remove the bumper. i noticed some bolts in the front too, next to the head lights.

you need to take off your nose, GFX, the top bolts, the hood, there should only be about 2 or 3 bolts on the bottom. one is on a support rod, and one is back by the door.

to replace, get a new one and bolt it back on

I've removed/replaced fenders with the gfx still on, but it makes it MUCH easier if you remove it. And you don't need to remove the nose either, just remove the 4-5 10mm bolts or so that attach it to the nose, the ones on top and then the couple at the bottom like said.

Be happy you have no rear quarter panel damage. That has to be cut out, or bondoed, or have an entire rear quarter panel replace ment not an easy task. The front fenders are a bolt on/bolt off process that can be done in less than 8 hours. Is it real bad damage or some small dings? If its small dings I'd bondo and paint, but if its some major/not easy to fix damage then i'd replace the whole fender.

thanks for the info guys - much appreciated!

I guess it would be fixable with bondo, however, it would be a lot of bondo in a few spots as well as the sanding of the rust around the wheel well. I'd rather just replace it if, like the last guy said, it can be done in a day.

BTW - how do you get the gfx off??! I dont see anything onthe bottom or back - does it just pry off?

Thanks!

For the gfx there are going to be several little bolts on the top and the bottom of the gfx, the bottom ones are easy to find, just crawl under there, the top ones may be covered in dirt, etc, just open the door and look on the rocker panel and you will see them. There are also 2 IIRC at the back of the gfx inside the car, you will need to remove the rear plastic to get at them, and then there are 1 or 2 behind the emblem in the gfx.

It can be done in far less than a day....couple hours at most. If it's not that bad though (you were saying some areas would require more bondo), just remove the plastic fender skirting (10 min work) and then bang the dents out from behind. Then you can leave the fender on and hardly have to do any bondo work...win-win! Quickly grind down the rust around the well and then treat the remaining with dupont metal conditioner to neutralize any remaining and then prime away.

Your gfx may be the type attached with two sided tape.

Ok for starters, the ground effects at the rear of the fender can be removed by removing the inner fender, this will give you access to the 3 body nuts inside that hold it in place. go underneath the car and remove the 7mm bolts that run along the rocker panel underside. You should be able to remove the side ground effect. the front: underneath near the nose, you should see 3 7mm bolts, undo them, there will be another about 6 inches straght back. This one is about 10mm in diameter. undo it. again in front of the wheel, there will be 3 more 10mm body nuts. remove them. Your GFX should come right off.

Guy's,

You forgot to mention the one bolt that will take an hour on it's own. The top one at the front of the fender where it joins the nose cone. Boy, was I glad I had an air ratchet. Have fun lining it all back up afterwards.

Well, just be glas you don't have a convertible, it take about 1 hour to remove each of the rear nuts holding the g f/x on at the rear, they are convered in reinforcement, hell, i just had my whole car apart, hood, fenders, doors, trunk lid, both bumpers...etc etc...it is not that hard just take is slow and make sure you know what you are doing.....
