I got a set of donor doors for my Firebird and now the task of transfering the locks and window bits to the new doors has come. The window winding stuff is attached to the door by a type of pop rivit. I tought at first I might be able to use nuts and bolts but the space is too tight to get access to. I went out and tried to buy big rivits but I can't get them anywhere. The biggest I can get is with a 6mm diameter where as I need an 8mm. Can anyone suggest how I might attach the winders to the doors.

The rivets are actually 1/4" rivets and they can be found at most any car glass repair shop or any auto body supply shop. It also takes a rather large rivet puller to do the job right. You can find either a manual or pneumatic puller to do the job. The manual one goes for around $75.00 at the auto body supply store and the pneumatic goes for a lot more. I would suggest using the rivets with stainless steel shanks since there is a lot of stress in that area.

any decently operated body shop would give you the rivets (at least we would) and install them for a small fee.

It would appear that we forgot to check his location, so it might be a wee bit of a problem getting the rivets.

even over there, a good glass shop should have a pop rivit tool and the large rivits..


what i did was have everything set to pop rivet, drove over to the local glass shop with the door panel off, and had them put the rivits in...

the guy did it for free, but he was also trying to get me to work there.... apparently, they need good glass techs that dont distroy door panels when you remove them.. lol

I tried body shops and glass replacement shops but no one stocks rivits of that size. I am going to use short bolts and locking nuts to secure the regulator to the door. I don't know how I am going to get in an tighten the bolts yet, looks like there will be lots of knuckle damage. I have no choice but to use bolts now as I can't get rivits.
The next problem after that is setting up the guide rails. The replacement doors I got all had manual windows and were fully striped when I got them. My old doors have electric windows. I see that there are about eight bolts that have to be adjusted on the door to get the glass to slide up properly. How do I set up these bolts properly? "(I have a feeling this is going to be a horrible job). I guess I can set them up same as on the old doors but I suspect every door is different and the bolts will have to be tweeked.
