Doing Cupholders, and I have a Few Questions

Hello,
I'm doin the tech atricle where I replace the ashtray with cupholders. I have a few questions regarding the project.

I have taken the aluminum ashtry out and below it is the plastic piece (the plastic slider that slips down my shifter.) Isnt this going to get in the way of the cupholders when I put it all back together? Here is a Picture of It, look where the ashtray was isnt that plastic piece gonna get in the way?

The Piece that holds the gear pattern (PRNODD21) how do I take that piece off? It looks like it will pop off, but in the process break the two black pieces that hold it in. How do I take it off?

Finnally, what is the black wire looking thing that goes from the gear indicator to the ashtray itself?, if it is a wire it dosent look like it connects to anything.

Here is a picture of the gear indicator and the black wire looking thing.

Thanks,

ok,
I got the gear indicator panel off, and I figured ut that that wire is some sort of a light to the ashtray...it dosent look like it ever lit the area up any good, and why you would want ot light up your ashtray is beyond me.

But what I am puzzeld by is that plastic piece that is going to getin the way it seems. I have measured 23/4 and it just dosent appear that there is going to be enough room while clearing the plastic sliding piece. Can anyone thats dne this project help me out?

Arn't you supose to cut the entire ashtray part of the panel off and build a new one from plexy glass? if you did that there would no longer be a plastic piece there. I could be wrong it's been a while since I've read the article but I think that's what it said.

Yea you need to cut it off, which i've done. But the sliding plastic pieve that goes around your shifter handle it sticks out about 2in. and that interferes with the 2 3/4 cupolder, there just isnt enough room. What I think Duffster did was remove the sliding piece and made the shifter plate flush. From what I can tell, he dosent have that plastic piece that goes around the shift handle.

So, What I did was take the plastic piece off and made my own shifter boot. Here is some pics:

Pic 3

Those pics are during the "testing stage to see how it would all work out, I should finish it up tomorrow and put it back on, and get to work on my cupholder. Any feedback, questions, or comments on my shift boot? When i'm finished I would like to put my shift boot project as a technical article, and "revise" the cupholder project if possible.

i think thats how the article says to do it. i dont think that plastic is verstrong. but if i wanted to do this mod right in front on my console were power window switches would be, it would be the same concept right?

Em,
As In between the "glove box" and your power window/hatch switches?

If I was doing it that way, I would take out the whole console and cut the hole then fabricate the cupholder to it.

But you could also do it without ever taking the console out. Get come sort of a cup with a "lip" on it, like a "p" at the top of the outer diameter of the cup. Lets say the cup is a 2 3/4 size cup, and the lip extends another 1/4 inch over the 2 3/4 of the cup....Just cut your hole 2 3/4 and drop the cup into it, and it will rest on the lip (the extra 1/4in.). That way you could easily remove the cup anytime you wanted to clean it out when u get trash in it! I think there is a pic on this site of someone who has done it that way. Hope this helps,

Not to go astray, but most people put the cup holders in the ash tray area. Why not move the window/ hatch switches up to the ashtray area and then in the area between the shifter and glove box put the cup holders? I think that's what mr_han_solo is trying to say but its late and I'm not reading all that clearly.
