I agree with every one else.I don't think your an idiot and what i say is any car running and driving good, is at least worth 1000 so i think you got a good deal.I just got mine 3 months ago been wanting one for a while and i only spent 780 for it and some drag rims and radials probably wont keep the radials thought they have some small cracks. The experience you will get from this will help you out alot and you can call it yours.

Re: am I an idiot for buying this car? should I just give up?

yeah it runs good and i got a few extra goodies with it that i probably would have had to pay a few hundred for the only issues is the interior is faded and dash is cracked and the body needs painting but nothing i cant handle and the interior is going in the trash anyways.

I definately dont think you are an idiot. My dad used to say"If it runs and drives its worth 500" The problem is that was 20 years ago. Nowdays, if it runs and drives its worth 1000. And as others have said you will learn so much from your car. Have fun.

don't get dismayed by it, get a cheap welder, and learn to replace panels (fiberglass doesn't cut it) it'll be a learning process, try to see if you can do the work, and sell it for more than you paid, that's what I've done with my last 2 vehicles, it takes work time and effort but in the long run, it's worth it.

Only people who believe a car is nothing more than a piece of transportation to get you from point A to point B would say your an idiot.

I wouldn't worry about how much you paid for it, but how much your about to put into it. . .

Re: am I an idiot for buying this car? should I just give up?

i agree "guy in a 90 rs" and futhermore as long as you have fun with it and you learn something from it or pick up some wild women in it haha then its well worth what you paid. i paid to much for my monte ss when i was young but now im glad i bought it many memories, street races, burnouts, people saying "man thats sweet or you dont see to many of them" makes it worth it so keep it and try fixing it up little by little.

Atleast it dosnt look like my parts car , Dont give up, once its done it'll all be worth it in the end.

Lite on fire, and someone molded the ground effects to the 1/4 panels, and fenders and everywhere, lol.

worse comes to worse, find a clean shell somewhere, or make that car a parts car.

Your car has 10 times less rust than mine did. you barely even have to weld on your car.

Good luck

Re: am I an idiot for buying this car? should I just give up?

I don't believe you did to bad for $800. I was lucky enough to catch my aunt before she let the junk yard take her Camaro. I paid $100 for it and so far have put roughly $200 into it already, course I'm still in the process of pulling everything off of it and pulling the ceased engine out of it. Best thing is I had a 350 sitting in my parents pole barn that the cover was just gaining dust. Course the worse thing my aunt could have done was to strip the paint and never do anything to keep it from rusting. But in the long run I'll be doing what I love and have a beautiful car once I'm done with it.

Re: am I an idiot for buying this car? should I just give up?

OK,,,this WAS A REAL DEAL........

600 bucks, super fine running 305, new breaks, couple of dents and needs new paint, black leather in super condition 1988 original 136 K miles.
no rust and the t-tops don't leak, need to stick alternator back in though ,everything else works ...just need to figure out where 1 wire goes and change the o-rings on the ac compresor and fill it up.

Re: am I an idiot for buying this car? should I just give up?

No, you're not an idiot.

One of the many things I've learned about owning a 3rd Gen. is that no matter how good of a condition it's in when you 1st buy it, I guarantee you that unless it's parked in a garage 6 days a week, 24 hours a day, you'll end up noticing various annoying issues with these cars. Even with mine in as good a condition as it is I've realized over the course of the last 15+ months that my money has been sipped out of my pocket so fast for my car. Gas, insurance, oil, filter, misc. parts, body parts because some a-hole hit me when I was parked, paint, time spent to learn, sweat, blood, aggravation, etc. These are some of the things that you have to deal with & if you want to bad enough you'll transform your car into a great piece of American history.

Def not an idiot, i'm pretty sure i've got you beat.
Got my rs in 07 from a body shop for $1000 and the thing didn't even run. I never went to look at it, i sent the bf to and he had no idea what he was looking for. Brought it back to my dads shop and theres a rot hole in the drivers side floor pan that goes up the firewall, crack in windshield, underneath is mega crusty and is missing headlights and side marker lights (was never put back together after being painted). Put new gas tank, sending unit, fuel line and some brake lines in it. Brought it home where it sat for another 3 years because the fuel pump **** the bed and it again wouldn't run. Just started back up on it got it running and its pretty hardcore rotted but...i'm attatched and can't let it go. But like i said you're not an idiot, it happens haha =)

Re: am I an idiot for buying this car? should I just give up?

Bought my 82 Sport Coupe a little more than a month ago for $900. I went to pick it up 100 Miles away. I found it on Craigslist. The Whole trip was by interstate.

-My Steering Wheel was VERY VERY VERY loose. you could grab the wheel and rotate it without turning it
-NONE of the original gauges were hooked up. The PO wired a small gauge cluster in mounted to the Dash.
-After i fixed the Steering wheel, the steering was still loose. I had to Replace the ENTIRE front suspention
-All of the tires are bald
-The Interior is just Shot, man. It's Shot.
-The Car Leaked Transmission Fluid Badly. Someone swapped the old transmission for a 700R4 but wouldn't spend $100 for the Proper cross member. as a result, the old one rubbed a hole in the pan of the 700R4. They attempted a seal with Silicone. It didn't work.
-The Hump of the oil pan is sunken in. It looks like the car was grounded out somehow because that thing is all caved in. It's a wonder the drain plug stays in. it only leaks a little.
-After further inspection, the Driver's door was probably hit. the repair is crap. Rust creeping through and the door doesn't fit well anymore.
-They put an aftermarket Eldelbrock Carb on there, but didn't change the Distributer.
-It seems like half of the vacuum lines weren't even hooked up. How did i make the 100 Mile Journey successfully?

I'm still ironing out these problems after about a month and a half. Do i regret having bought this car. Maybe a little, but i'm not considering giving up. I'm gonna finnish this damn thing. I know i'll NEVER get my money back on it, but it's what i wanted. Even if it is in sad shape. Hang in there. I intend to.

Idiot for buying the car? No. However if you expected more for $800, you might be an idiot.

It was $800. What did you expect?

It looks like you got a good project car there. As long as the rear quarters, and the main chassis is in good shape (roof, a-pillars, b-pillars, etc.) then there's not too much that can't be fixed on these cars pretty easily once you learn how to weld.

Of course you could fix rust spots with rivets as long as you seal the repair well, but I couldn't say how much bondo work it would take to hide a rivet on an exposed piece.
