Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?

Well I have a Ford Escort wagon 5 speed as my dd and the wife has the family minivan. I would love to get a TG V6 5 speed Camaro as a DD but my little wagon gets great mpg and it serves alot of purposes. I have been tossing the idea around in my head for a long time. I'm not sure my wife will approve so eventually I will have to sweet talk her. LOL

Please tell me that there are others here who use their thirdgens as daily drivers, and have been relatively successful with them?

Or are thirdgens just meant to sit in our driveways looking pretty while we drive civics to work...

No SIR!!! i have a 5.7 V8 as a DD. never overheated and so on and so forth. ive had the car almost a year and ive driven it evry single day ive had it. as far as im concerned, our 3rd Gens should be out on the street keeping the civics (and mustangs) in there place lol!!!

my little 2.8 is my daily driver. She made it 16 hours from maryland to Illinois great too. the drive back is a different story, poor transmission. But thats the only time its ever given me any problems.

mine was, whenever something wasnt broken. so i'd drive that for a few months till something broke, then i'd drive the lumina for a month or so, fix the camaro, drive it for a few months, then the lumina. repeat.

Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?

Mine is, at first the 87 was my dd, now my 88 is my dd. My other 88 is too nice and rare to use as a dd so it's a nice weather car. none of them have left me stranded. The dd 88 had some issues w/ a malfunctioning ECM (high idle, not running in field service & aldl mode) a lot of neglect and no maintenance, interior parts shot, speedo not working, bad air switch valve, bad O2 sensor, leaking injectors, bad spark plugs & wires, a faulty distributor (bad idle miss), a bent panhard bar, a hole in the rocker area next to the cat con, a bunch of play on the ball joints...and so on LOL. Most of it was poor maintenance though. As I said, it never was severe enough to leave me stranded. I fixed all of it, the car is now mostly rattle free and drives like a champ. Only have to do the exhaust and then I'll call it done.

Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?

I got my car when I was fifteen, so it wasn't a daily then as I only had a permit, and it was properly stored in the winter right away (as it has been since new). When I was sixteen, it was my summer DD for that year and then again stored in the winter, and I paid my friends $5 a week to bring me to school. When I was 17, I got a second vehicle and have always had two vehicles so the Camaro has never really been a daily driver aside from the summers when I was sixteen and seventeen as I recall I got my second car in the fall of being 17.

Couldn't bare to use this car as a daily driver, it's just way too damn nice. It's also been garaged its entire life, so hence nearly 20 year old paint in excellent shape (it was hailed on in '92, no paintless dent repair then FTLLLL).

Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?

The guy I bought my car simply would not shut up about how rare it is and how it will be a fantastic summer car, all the work that went into it, how much more it is worth than what I was giving him, ect...

You should've seen his face when my dad told me in front of him "We'll stop by kal-tire on the way home to order some winter tires"

I still take the bus on really bad day's, but unless the roads are absolutally horrible its driven everyday.

yea true. i HATE driving in winter or when the ground is even a bit wet. due to the fact that my car has SO much torque, i drift even in 4th gear with small acceleration. its scared me b4. so i try not 2 drive much in bad winter days but other than that it's my DD!

Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?

I drive my 5.7 camaro everyday. I have never had it break down on me (yet) I have even done 150+ mile trips where I would only have one ten minute break and the car still would not overheat. Gas mileage isnt great but it is great getting all the stares and people tapping kids on the shoulders and pointing and saying stuff like "wow not many of those left and I drove one in high school" and all these other comments that relate with an experience they have had with a third gen. Even with the bad gas mileage would I ever sell it, no way. Though I might go out and buy a V6 stick shift Camaro for the better gas mileage. But my IROC is the one I would never sell! Heck I get more compliments and stares then my moms 04 mustang gets and it is perfect and I have a paint job where clearcoat is peeling bad on the back end and it has dings and dents. Also it helps that its loud enough to hear from over a block away (Mustang is a V6).

Same here mine is also my first car! Got it in February and I have already got some things fixed that the PO didnt know how to I guess. For instance replaced a few fuses and got all the pwr locks, radio, and alot of other stuff. Plus I guess the other guy didnt know it was really important to have the MAF plugged in. Only payed $2300 for mine with 20k on the rebuild and it starts right off the bat!

Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?

Just picked up a '85 Trans Am and now that I got it smogged (one fail, new cat, pass) and I plan to get it running like a top, fix some rust issues and paint it, and drive it and drive it. It's too damn fun not to (I live in LA so weather's not an issue), and if it breaks down I have a 93 Caddy Deville as a back-up. I know the $ I'm gonna put into I'll never get back investment-wise, but I could care less - one drive on the freeway with the tops off and I was hooked like crack. It was only 2K anyway. PS if anyone knows a good place in LA for paint let me know

Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?

These cars were actually bullet proof when they were new. With good maintenance they should still be very dependable.I had an 83 TA 305 carbed that was a daily driver back in the mid 80's. The car was almost completely trouble free. Now that I am older I don't want to ride daily in an F Body. Having had four spinal fusions and being 55 years old, they are no longer comfortable for me. I love the cars though. My dd is a 2008 Crown Victoria LX. Very nice car for an old fart. If I were young like many of you, than I would be in a Z-28 or a Trans AM every day. In the winter months, my dd is a 2001 Expedition Sport, as we got lots of winter in the mountains, and 4x4 is almost required. When I bought my current TA in 2005 it was all original with 25K on the clock. It is also a highly optioned car, so obviously it would not be wise to run the miles up on a car this lightly used. Sort of by accident the car turned into a show car. I take her out on nice warm sunny days and drive in the country, but just enough to keep her limbered up. She currently has 29K miles on her clock, so I am averaging about 700 miles a year. We live a few miles from the Tail of the Dragon, US 129, and the Hell Bender, US 28. It is fun to take the old TA out there and give her a little excercise.

Daily Driver in the summer time, Whats the point of having a fun car that you don't drive? If it didn't snow in the winter it would never come off the road..

Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?

92 Z28 is was a daily driver up until a month ago. The fuel pump started making noise. So I dropped the fuel tank and found about a half inch of mud in the bottom. Ordered up the POR-15 tank sealing kit and figured while I was waiting I'd clean up the under carriage. Then I found some rust..... Well I guess I dont need to explain the "while I'm here" snowball effect that is a part of our hobby. Fact is I bought the car cause ever since my buddy in high school got one I've wanted one. Why keep my favorite ride in the garage? Sure those low mile super pristine examples are nice to look at I would never want one. No fun having a car you can't drive. No reason to have a project you don't show off. We work on actual cars not plastic models. Drive the wheels off your car. Besides breaking parts leads to some of the best car stories!

My 1987 IROC does not have tires for snow on them, so it sits in snow weather, but my 1985 Sport does have all season, and is driven in all weather.

The required tires for the IROC does not satisfy all weather driving requirements.

Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?

My Camaro is the only car I own.

It's registered all year, is insured all year and has a set of winter tires as well.

I don't need the car to get to work, so it only is used for approx. 3000 miles/year.

Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?

Mine is a daily driver every day. I work 50 miles from my house, one way. The original engine went 312k miles, so I bought another one straight from GM. Hoping to see that one reach even more miles. About to drop a new Tranny in it, then it will just be paint and shocks.

Its not that I'm afraid to drive it in the snow, I spent a shitload of time redoing the body on my car, and if you live in New England you know how bad the road salt ruins cars up here.

Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?

I use my 1990 IROC as a DD and I get around 25 mpg on the highway. My other car is a 1972 Datsun 240z that I drive if I'm working on the IROC. Now this might change after it's painted and a zz4 is sitting in it...

Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?

I have had several 2.8 3rd Gen Daily Drivers over the Years, would gladly get another for DD Duty, if I had extra cash laying around.

Had a 87 Firebird Auto, 84 Firebird 5 Speed (fun) and a 88 Camaro Auto

Any mechanical part is doomed to fail. so when someone says something like that to me. i smack them. now your 2011 whatever might not fail on anything for at least 3 years. but eventually it will....and it will again....so why not just fix your old car when something fails then have monthly car payments

Maybe they just want a newer car. Can't really blame 'em.

I mean, who wouldn't want a 2010+ Camaro SS (Even though I don't really love them, I'd pick one up if I could afford it) a newer Challenger, a new 5.0 Mustang, or even any new import of any sort, whatever they're into.

Newest things I'll have for a while are the '01 Slowstang GT, and if I decide to get back into bikes, a 2004-2006 Yamaha R1. But I'd really love to have a 2011+ 5.0 Mustang or a newer Challenger. Really nice cars IMO. Then there's my IROC which turns 25 this July. Getting old, but still only 99K on account of being trapped in the garage!

I think you are perfectly correct, however, I would have said 5 years. It does not matter which age a vehicle is, it is the condition, mechanical, esthetics and interior, which is important. Recycling vehicles is best achieved by keeping them in running condition, body damage, and interior free from being broken.

My view is to fix what's broken, period.

Richard.

My 91Z is my summer daily driver, but the water pump went south today so i had to charge the battery in the mustang,.. oh yea, the camaro is on engine number 2 but that's because the PO blew the little 305 up.

Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?

Yup, but I'd like to retire it from that status soon, with the changes I've made its not a good DD choice in todays market. I'll finally clean it up and save it for special occaisions!

I'd rather have an old muscle car or a third gen any day over any new car. New cars are ugly, quiet and not even close to "good looking" to me.

And don't even get me started on modern day trucks

my Camaro used to be my daily driver, it never left me stranded either, but I had to pull the insurance on it to afford school so now it just gives me time to work on the body and suspension.

I love both old and new cars. I'd take a split window '63 Corvette, or a 2012 Boss 302. Quiet? My Slowstang is from the 21st century, and nowhere near quiet.

If you think this is ugly, that's on you.

Re: Does anyone here use their thirdgen as a daily driver?

I use mine as a daily driver. Don't see the point in having it sit around. The way I look at it, I have no car payment, full coverage insurance w/ Progressive runs me $380/yr. The only downside is the premium gas prices. Even with the high gas prices, its still cheaper for me to drive my Camaro in the long run.

Best thing I ever did was buy another one of these cars.

I wouldnt want a newer camaro ss. The new challengers are nice but most new cars are just pains in the *** to work on. id rather have my old slow car then a fast new one. I can take that 40k for a new camaro and put it into my older one and be just as reliable, just as fast, look just as good
