Does anybody know of a chemical stripper that will dissolve hardened clearcote and paint? And even more difficult, not destroy the rubber/plastic on the nosepiece/bumper?

I want to strip minne down, and I don't want to grind or sand it. Is there such a miracle chemical or stripper? I've tried Zip Strip and it does nothing.

I used a stripper from corvette central to strip my front bumper cover,it worked fairly well as my car had basecoat/clearcoat several times.Good Luck.

80 grit and a flexible pad. It won't take as long as you think. Stripped mine in 10 hrs or so with 80 and 180. Had approx 7 coats of paint on it.

I want to use chemical stripper. I don't want swirl marks, gouges and divots, etc. I was never able to have enough skill to grind or sand anything down to bare material without leaving marks.

If I'm going to put that much effort into it, I want it to look as good as posible.

'Klean Strip' works great. Be sure to buy the "premium" stuff in with a GOLD lable. Wall Mart seems to sell it the cheapest, but home Depot and several other stores carry it too. From a spray can works best,...... works from the pour can too (liquid); but not quite as well. I've had good results bushing the liquid on as a first pass, using some rough stainless steel wool or dull scraper to get the first layer off, then re-spreading with brush, letting sit, then spraying with a can and letting sit till finish softens up before steel wool again.

I used chemical stripper to strip my entire car in prep for new paint. Engine bay, bumpers, Door jams, firewall, Cowl,.... everything. MUCH easier than sanding because you can remove paint from even the smallest cracks/crevases with ease.

Took 3 full passes to get almost all of the finish removed from each section of the car as I worked on it - then 1 more "detail" pass to remove any remaining crud left over.










You will still need to final sand bumper covers before spraying any primer.... but there will be no additional divits or gouges in the bumper covers to deal with. A power sander WILL cause divits and gouges in a bumper cover if your not very carefull !
