L-88 Hood Scoop

Now that I am done with my rear disc conversion, I decided to get to work on my L-88 hood scoop install on my original hood that is the SMC glass that was put on the 82 Z-28. I have the hood cut out, scoop bonded on and sanded twice and now have the next coat of Everglass waiting for the first sanding to flatten out the surface. I also cutout some heat extraction vents and screened them in and screened at opening where the cowl comes out to the windshield, that was a challenge for sure. I cutout some pieces from the part of hood I cut out to close off the ends where I cut through the hood bracing under the hood to give it a finished look and to strengthen the bracing once again. Here are a few pics of my progress. I like the look that it will have on the car. Will keep updated when I mock it up on the car for final fitment.

Re: L-88 Hood Scoop

Looks good so far, Did you fiberglass the inside of the scoop to the hood ? I see you did a good job on the out side of the scoop to the hood, And the screen looks great.

I used the 2 part epoxy adhesive to bond the scoop to the hood, it was made for bonding those 2 type of materials together and is a 3-M product that uses one of their special guns to mix and apply. I ground the bonding line on the hood where it was to bonded and scuffed up the bottom of the scoop to make sure I got good bond. I used the gun to put down a good bead around the scoop and then set scoop on and use some padded clamps at the cowl end and some other things that I could put weight in around the perimeter of the scoop and left it sit for 24 hrs. Then I used the remainder of the adhesive to put a bead around the inside of the scoop and also around where the scoop and hood line and used a putty spreader to feather out like you would bondo and let that dry. Then I used my D/A to rough up the epoxy and get the mounting line relatively smooth and put the first coat of Evercoat which is made for this type of product of fiberglass and have sanded it once and have now put a second coat which will be the last and now for the fine sanding to get it perfectly smooth. As far the under side of the hood and scoop, the bead of epoxy that I put on the inside is already smooth from when I applied it. I have been sanding the underside as well and fixed a couple of cracks that occurred around a couple of the hinge bolts to put strength back into it. The 406 I have in this car puts out soooo much heat under hood that I had to find a way to help vent the heat out and thus, is why I went with the L-88 hood and put the vents in I used a piece of screen that was made for gutters since it is aluminum and could be shaped some and the glued into place. Sorry for the long reply, just trying to give as much info as possible for others who wish to take on this type of project. Here's a pic of the underside where the seam is located.

Re: L-88 Hood Scoop

It sounds like you did a good bit of work to make sure it will not crack, And your right the L88 hood scoop will take a lot of the heat out of the engine bay,

Yea, I have a lot of work in it so far, but I like the results thus far and looking forward to getting it on the car. I will store the cowl hood for the time being and may sell it later if I decide to stay with this hood. I am really hoping that it does indeed remove a good chunk of the heat that plagues these cars.
