Difference in front and rear brakes

This may be a stupid question to some but why are rear brakes always smaller than front brakes. I can understand why you would need large brakes in the front but why not have the same size all around? Wouldn't it help your stopping distance to have larger wheel brakes?

Front brakes do the majority of the work so they're usually bigger. If you go too big on the rear, you can over power them causing frequent "end arounds".
