Time to slow the Bird down; Help Upgrading the old Birds brakes.

Hi all,
Almost trashed my 82 bird today. Give her a little to much gas, and she went too fast and had to stop her fast. While this time it ok, didn't hit anyone but I scare the hell out of them.

Anyway I thinking I need some better stopping power. So its time to go with four wheel disc setup. I have the orignal braking system that came on the car new. The braking system does a pretty good job, but I think there is room for improvemt.

Now there are lot of choices out them. What I what is the best braking system for the bucks. I have alsolutly no problem with upgrading my current rear end with disk brakes. I know replace the entire rear axle, but the rear axle was rebuilt a few years ago. And I do want to keep the 2.73 rear end.

So I need sugguestions for the best upgrade at the lowest possible price.
Please let me know you experiance with updating both front and rear ends.
Thanks for all of your help!!!!

The Ideal here to make the brakes better. I would like to prevent dry condition wheel lockup. I don't drive this car in rain, snow etc.

Maybe converting the rear to disk and better pads up front is all I will need.

the issue i foresee with kit like that is finding replacement parts when they are needed. i mean if you swap out the parts for LS1 brakes you can always go to any part store and say i need rear brake pads/rotors for a 2001 camaro z28. much simpler and i would bet a lot cheaper!

Bruce

Your going to find a problem like I did with my 1982 that had drum brakes. I wanted to do a quik rear disc install the rear came from my 84 trans am. Anyways brake lines everywhere have different fittings and flares and when you try to put in a disc proportioning valve the lines fitting up there they are even different sizes. even the lines from the master cylinder to prop. valve are different.

I ultimately had to replace every brake line in my car. I believe in 82 they used standard size fitting then switched to metric at some point. they may have even switched late in the 82 year, my car appears to be a early 82.

not trying to discourage you discs are much better but mine turned out to be more hassle then it was worth. Of course maybe if you find 82 parts it will be easy

Re: Time to slow the Bird down; Help Upgrading the old Birds brakes.

From what I have been reading the change from SAE to metric happened after 1983. So any 1984 and after will have metric fittings. I have a 1983 Trans Am with a leak in the main rear brake line. I am guessing it is going to be a bit challanging to get fittings to mate up but I am hoping NAPA will be my friend. I have also seen references to the following place.

http://finelinesinc.com/

They have pre-bent brake and fuel lines and they seem to know about the difference between the SAE and metric as their part number change betwen 83 and 84.
