hood clearance

Hello every one. I'm in need of some suggestions. I have a stock 305 in my 84 Z28 except for an Edelbrock 1406 series carb. It was on there when I bought it. Anyway, There is about a 1/4" gap between the air cleaner and the carb. It's hitting the fuel line and choke. On the Edelbrock website, they say to use a spacer, so I bought the one they say to use. But it woun't fit due to lack of hood clearance. (There is an adapter to adapt the spread bore intake) I figure I have a couple of options:

1.) Go back to a stock Q-jet: I have another 84 Z28 with the L69 engine I use for parts. It needs rebuild but other than that is okay. This would alow the use of the stock air cleaner as well as stock manifold.

2.) Get an Edelbrock Performer manifold. That would eliminate the air cleaner spacer.

If anyone has any suggestions let me know. By the way, a hood with a cowl is out of the question for now. I'm running this baby stock until I'm done building up my 400. (Which will probably be sometime in the summer.) Thanks for the help.

Car: 85 iroc z
Engine: LG4 :(
Transmission: 5 speed
I have the same carb on my car and had to put a small dent in the air cleaner base where the electric choke is. I also have an edelbrock open element air cleaner so i dont know if that would work with stock air cleaner base.

Also you could buy a 90 degree fitting for the fuel inlet and that should get the fuel line outa the way ( I don't know what the part number is but it should be on the edelbrock web site).
