1986 305 New Carb/Intake - Rough Idle/Poor Milage

Greetings,

I just had my Carb/Intake Manifold replaced with a new Edelbrock Performer 1400 Carb and Performer Intake Manifold. However, the car's idle is rough and I am getting only 8.6 mpg. Did not replace distributor, cap, rotor or spark plug wires. Here are my symptoms

The Bad

  • Rough idle under load. Can feel idle under load while setting in car, there is visible hood shake. Almost feels like miss-firing, not sure because acceleration is great never bogs down or is hesitant.
  • When slow crawling to stop, car seems to want to jump forward a little as engine is slow idling. Nothing major just can feel it want to surge ahead just a little.
  • Neutral idle varies between 800 - 1200 RPM's
  • Get some pinging while accelerating up a grade
  • Noticeable gas odor from engine compartment
  • Have exhaust leak at CAT but exhaust still seems strong/noxious. Unburned fuel?
  • Gas mileage is only 8.6 mpg
  • Car is dieseling when shut off. Shut off idle usually about 1100-1200 RPM

The Good

  • Car starts fine
  • No hesitation on acceleration, strong acceleration throughout power band. Never hesitates
  • Never stalls
Obviously one of the variables is I no longer have the Quadrajet computer controlled carburetor, Check Engine Light pegged, but I do have the same distributor. Not sure what that variables that brings into play.

Other possibles that go through my mind are:

  • Vacuum Leaks - Did not try carb cleaner test
  • Timing set wrong
  • Air/Fuel mixture wrong. Is brand new carb
Any ideas anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ed

All of those problems are possible my guess would be looking for a disconnected vacuum line some place.

"Obviously one of the variables is I no longer have the Quadrajet computer controlled carburetor"

did you change the distributor? if not that is a big problem. you need a non-computer controlled distributor. right now it has no way to advance itself.

Most of your issues are caused by the computer controlled distributor and it's lack of adequate timing control now that the ccc-qjet is gone. Get a mech/vac advance HEI, new plugs and wires and time appropriately. Then you can work on tuning the carb if needed.

Southern California? If smog is an issue you can only use the original carb.
