Help me with tuning

Hey everyone I finally got my car back running from my 400 swap that messed up and now have a 383. I just need a little help with tuning the carb.

First off te car is "dieseling" where when I turn it off it wants to stay running an shakes the whole car. I think this could be related to my timing which is my 2nd problem.

Second, I can't seem to get my cars idle down. I have the carb idle screw all the way out and if I bring the distributor down more the engine seems to like hesitate. What should my car idle at? It's at like 1200rpm (6speed tranny) any tips on timing? I disconnect the HEI vacuum on the carb and distributor and plug them. I don't really understand on how moving the distributor and adjusting the carb idle screw together.

Third is kind of electrical, just wondering where I should hook my alternators "signal" wire up to. (brown and white wire) it charges at 13v on idle but as I accelerate it goes down and when I let off it goes back to normal.

And what octane should I run? Engine has 9.8:1 compression and I think I just 89 octane in it. Should I go 93? I think maybe even a higher octane would help with my dieseling issue.

Thanks for reading.

Re: Help me with tuning

The Holley tuning sticky does a good job of explaining the carb portion. But, your first stop needs to be the timing. No sense touching the carb untill that is sorted out. Set your idle low (almost stalling) and adjust the timing to 14 degrees advance WITHOUT vacuum advance. Next, rev the engine and see where full advance ends up at (should be around 36 degrees). Next, plug in the vacuum advance and see where the advance goes to at idle. It should be in the mid to high 40's. During all of this, you will need to mess with the idle screw to keep things running. After this, then the carb...
