how do i check dwell

OK I can't figure out where to plug in my dwell meter on 85 camaro with CCC quadrajet. There is no little green plug up near the alternator. There is a bluish three pin connector near passengers side firewall that doesn't seem to go to anything. Is that it and how would I connect it. Or do I have to tap into the Mc solenoid wires directly. Does the car have to be running or just ignition on. Every post I've seen is super vague about all this. From what I understand you have to use the idle air bleed and then the AF idle screws to adjust dwell while running if everything else is right... It should vary between 25 and 35 on 6 cylinder. It's a large single wire green connector by the heater box. Nothing connected to it but the wire. Attach the positive lead of the dwell meter to the blade in the connector, and the negative lead to a good ground.

The engine has to be running and warmed up. When in open loop, it will be exactly 30 degrees at idle (that's the computer setting). It can't be adjusted until in closed loop.

Usually you can set the idle mixture screws to the factory setting and leave them alone. The dwell adjustment is then done in small increments with the IAB. If that doesn't work, there's something wrong somewhere.

You should set the ignition timing and idle speed before attempting to adjust the MCS dwell. You should shoot for 30 degrees dwell (50% duty cycle).

Re: how do i check dwell

I found it. Was tucked under there hidden pretty well. Problem is my dwell won't read without the car at like 2k Rpms. Guess its too cold otherwise??
