Ditch the stock fuel pump?

Im going to be converting my tbi to a carb soon and would like to know if it is a better idea to just put a new fuel pump in rather than buy the regulator. The regulator is about $80 and i didnt think a fuel pump ran much more.

Its going to feed a 350 with around 350 horse.
Whats my best bet?

Thanks, Jon

Jon, I think a lot of guys on the board will advise you to get the regulator. Switching to a block mounted fuel pump will require you to disable the in-tank pump so it doesn't run any more (or it will over-power the mechanical pump and raise fuel pressure through the roof anyway). Once it is turned off I beleive it would itself become a restriction to fuel flow- the mechanical pump having to draw fuel THROUGH it. Dropping the tank to remove the pump would be such a PITA it wouldn't be worth it.

I have a new holley electric pump that I am going to run inline - and leave the stock pump (tpi) in the tank but w/o power. I had asked before and the consensus seemed to be that the holley electric pump would be able to pull through the disabled in-tank pump fine. I still wonder about this though . . .
I am still leaving the regulator on as well.

i did this conversion about a year ago not a hard conversion if you pay close attention to small details! dont use the regulator at all just use a stock mechanical pump and youl be fine if thats all the engine needs (if its not to hot a engine!) if it is edlebrock or holley make big pumps. just be sure to keep the return line running or you'll build to much pressure and flood it every time! if the regulator goes it'll flood the engine and staRT A FIRE(POSSIBLY)!? just us4e a block pump. if you have any questions oon the conversion email me at

burnourpm@hotmail.com

feel free to ask away no matter how dumb it sounds! better safe than sorry.
