'84 IROC convertible

I just spotted this and I offer it up here for discussion. Pretty car, but one that didn't exist. Your thoughts?

I will start by saying this is clearly an ASC convertible, but dating to at least '86 since it has the center brake light. Also, IROCs were not around for '84. Pretty car and the seller openly states that he does not know the story about it. Anyone care to speculate?

The iroc decal is in the front of the door, the wheels are 85-87 style, The interior color and the small black and silver stripe above the ground effects as well as the silver "5.0 high output" above the side z28 emblem. I vote it's a 86.

that's a very nice car, but none of the dates or options match with what was historically available. That looks like a factory car, the early convertible conversions weren't like that that I know of, not until 1987. Also, there was no IROC in 1984, and it's not a HO engine in there as the decals indicate (single inlet air cleaner, pass side dipstick, i.e. lg4) I don't think that interior was available in 1985, neither that shifter style (though the shift plate is the 82-83 style). You can't put that shifter into an 82-87 without seriously annoying modifications. There are holes in the dash for a map pocket which was ONLY available on 25th anniversary 87 models and was very rare.

I think this car was stolen and the vin swapped personally.

Definitely, I would say. These are some of the most stolen cars of their era, and that's a vert (even easier). You can't even see the engine in the video, but it sounds like a v8 to me. However, the original color was definitely red (engine bay) and it's a vert, and obviously not the type of conversion that was available in 1982.

I'm not even going to say what I was thinking when I saw the owner in the vid...

That car seems to have quite an identity crisis. There's no doubt that the interior is from an 87. I'm no 'vert expert, but the CMSL looks like the unique 87 style to me. The purple junk above the "weight" text on the tire loading tag looks like the same purple junk that's on all of the 87+ body VIN tags, all of which leads me to believe that this body is an 87 as well.

Nice it even has a hitch LOL! Yeah the CMSL did not come out till 86, the listing says it's not really and Iroc. Seems like a fankinmaro to me, but i'm no Iroc expert. I do know that is not an HO engine.

I have seen it before to where people have converted a T-top car to a convertible. For example, Technically if you had a convertible with an engine fire, and took a T-top car and simply transfer the pieces and parts over to the T-top car...

here is how I would do it.
1) remove all of the Convertible pieces, from the convertible
2) remove the interior of the T-top car
3) cut bottom of front fenders and use brackets from convertible.
3) Mount the sub-frame connectors to the new car., Either weld or rivets.
4) cut the top off of the car
5) crush inner rear wheel wells to make clearance for top.
6) Weld in reinforcement bar for trunk and tonneau mount between wheels
7) drill holes for fender caps
8) assemble your new convertible...
9) use undercoating to cover up welds.
9) Transfer convertible pieces to new car.

I think it would be doable, and I think you could do it in your garage, You just need to find a junkyard car.
