Thermostat life

My '89 still has the stock 195 stat. Is there a certain point it should be replaced or is this not the case with thermostats. I was going to replace it but want to make sure it's even necessary first. Thanks.

I change mine at least every other a/f change, so like every 40-50k miles......or every 4-5 years.

If it's working, why replace it?

Because they are cheap, easy to do, and will leave you stranded when they fail.
