A/C Help

Hey guys,I just took my 86 T/A in to get it changed over to r134.The guys there are top notch and have known them for years.I replaced the dryer with a new unit and used the Ford blue orifice tube ,as a lot of articles have said works better with r134.They vaced the system and charged it but are not getting good numbers at all. 85 deg. day and was 55deg at idle.I took it for a drive and the outside air felt cooler.Thet did leak test it first after I replaced all the old seals with the new green ones. The original system seems in good shape?? all the pressure numbers are good and they have done quite a few retrofits.Does this sound familiar to anyone? Maybe the compressor needs to be replaced? a little noisy but not bad.Any ideas prone to our cars would be very helpful. It is a 305 TPI auto Thanks Allan

Re: A/C Help

When I had mine done by a chevy dealer they were getting about the same temps. It sucked, and didnt cool worth a $hit. I dont believe 134 works very well in our systems at all.

The 134 leaked out (surprise, surprise) and this year I went with a new compressor, tube, drier and used autofrost. 38* all day, much, much better.

Re: A/C Help

My luck with 134 was so bad (for whatever the reason) that I've switched back to 12. By the way, I've never had difficulty finding a shop that couldn't do 12.

Re: A/C Help

It depends on your climate to a certain extent. 50° in Maine is fairly comfortable. 50° in Florida is terrible and won't keep up.

We run the A/C about 11 months a year in Texas. For about 9 months, my wife's Blazer with R134a stock is quite comfortable. But during those 2 months in the summer, it will blow 45°, but the inside will still have trouble staying comfortable to me. Higher cabin temps just won't get rid of the humidity as well.

You are using MAX instead of NORM right? Running it on NORM will raise the temperature by at least 5° and bring in more humid outdoor air.

Re: A/C Help

yes, using max.I wonder if part of the system is bad and what part that might be?,if the charge amount and pressures are good??no leaks.Do I need to vac the system down and manually clean out some of the system ie ...condensor,compressor and redo???The tech did try water through the condensor and checked temps with the blower motor resistor out in that area.

No. He should have used an A/C flush solvent. Water could possibly be the worst thing he could have used. Moisture is an A/C systems biggest enemy and will result in poor performance unless you get it all out.

Re: A/C Help

Did they adjust the low pressure cycling screw? My car turns off at 26 psi stock. People who do R134a conversions usually need to turn that down to 20-22 psi.

Re: A/C Help

I dont think so.I did read about turning it about a 1/4 turn counter clockwise to take about 4 psi off.does that sound about right? Thanks for the help Allan
