Temp guage pegged at zero
Hi all. I originally posted this in the Electronics board but haven't had any response yet so I thought i would re-post here.
I was changing out a header gasket the other night and I removed the connector to the temp sending unit in the head that sends to the dash. Then forgot to put it back on. I drove the car half way down the block and noticed the gauge wasn't registering. I pulled over expecting to see the wire melting against a header tube. It was close but the wire and connector are still fine I've followed the wire further along there doesn't appear to be any cuts/ damage.
I assume that grounding the wire should peg the gauge to the max while unplugging it has the opposite effect?
I've removed this wire a hundred times without issue in the past.
Any ideas?
Jon

Re: Temp guage pegged at zero
I'm assuming that, as there is no power source to the sending unit, the circuit works by applying ground to the wire that attaches to the sender with a varying resistance as the temp changes. What I'm getting at is; if the wire grounded out it wouldn't cause a short right?

Temper Tantrum
With the engine OFF, observe the temp gage.
Now start the car.
What does the temp gage do when the key is in the START position?

Re: Temper Tantrum
It didn't do anything at all. In the end I replaced the gauge with one from a spare cluster. I was so certain that the problem was in the wiring that I didn't expect it to solve the problem. But it did.
Part of the problem is that my assumption of what the gauge should do when unplugged was all wrong. With the wire unplugged it reads at the max not zero.
So I'm back in business. Thanks for the reply.
