What scanner to get?
92 camaro 305 T.B.I. I want a scanner that checks sensors like coolant temperature, MAP, TPS, etc. What else can scanners show if you are not throwing any codes?

Re: What scanner to get?
On a TBI setup look into WinALDL. Will need a laptop & ALDL cable to use it.
It will shows the codes (as you posted), along with the values of the sensors and some other odds & ends. CTS, IAT, RPM, O2, then items such as INT, knock counts, and BLM values. Note that on a TBI setup this data is only sent once every 1.8 seconds. So the update rate is slow, but OK for troubleshooting.

Re: What scanner to get?
WinALDL will work on the f-body TBI setups and the f-body MAF TPI setups.
For higher speed data on the MAF TPI setups ('86 - '89) and for SD TPI setups ('90 - '92) can use TunerProRT. There is also DataMaster which a lot of folks like. One is shareware the other is commercial.
WinALDL is free.

Re: What scanner to get?
I just ordered the ALDL cable but I don't think it will fit in my laptop.. In the picture it doesn't look like the DB9 connection like ive read. Also, will the program tell me if the CTS or anything else is bad?

Re: What scanner to get?
The scan program won't tell you that the CTS is bad. What it will show you is the temperature that the CTS thinks the engine is at.

I just got the ALDL cable but it's a 15 pin female connector. I do not have any ports on my laptop for that.

Re: What scanner to get?
That certainly won't plug into a laptop. Need to talk to someone at where-ever you got the cable to find out what it is for. A serial ALDL will have the DB9, while a USB ALDL cable will have a type A connector.
The car end of the cable should be a large-ish 12 pin female connector.

Re: What scanner to get?
That's a jumper cable for a professional tech tool. A mechanic will have a generic scan tool and use a jumper like that for the different cars. It won't do you any good.
If you have a laptop with a serial port then you can make a cable for about 10 bucks.
If you have a newer laptop with USB only, try here:
