How to choose the right programmer...

Could we get some feedback here on the different programmers? I've read quite a bit about the diy-prom and I can't figure out which programmer I should get. The autoprom looks like the best considering it'll do everything but I'm going to be tuning gm 305/350/383 tbi and the 8746 ecm. I've read about the prominator and it looks quite good also. Everything looks good when you read it but can we get some real feedback from the users here?

Any suggestions or comments regarding the different approaches would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Some of the choice depends upon what you want to do. Are you interested in doing some tuning then dropping a chip in and closing the cover? Or, are you interested in emulating during the tuning process, or are you looking for something that is mounted into the ECM that allows for quick updates to be made.

The Flash'nBurn allows burning of Flash chips (no erasing required).

The Ostrich allows for emulation.

The APU1 allows for both burning and emulating.

The Prominator is added to the ECM and allows a new BIN to be loaded nearly instantaneously.

WinALDL is free (scan/tuning aid), and a cable is inexpensive.

Sounds like the Prominator is the way to go then, I guess what I'd like to do is datalog the ecm now and see how the system is running and then tune to my needs. To be clear, the prominator is connected and tucked away with the ecm with only an exposed cable to connect to laptop correct? And the flash memory on the prominator replaces the current chip?

Thanks again
