coolant temp sensor...

I have a 350 carbed in my 83 z28. So obviously some of the connections are going to match up. I'm trying to get my coolant temp sensor to werk and am not having much luck.

ok, so I ripped out my cluster and I can't figure out what this thing is doing.

I figured out which ones are the power and the ground. Then i figured out which one is the signal. I tried to plug the gauge directly into the battery and then the coolant sensor into the gauge directly as well.

When I plugged the gauge into the power and ground it went to zero like it should. Then when I hooked up the sensor wire the needle went past 260, which was obviously incorrect. Anyone have any suggestions? Is there some sort of resistor that has to be wired inline or something?

Re: coolant temp sensor...

Make sure you don't have a short on the sensor wire. If it is grounded, the gauge should show full-hot.
What is the resistance of the sensor? It should be somewhere in the kilo-ohm range (the actual value will vary based on the ambient temp). If it's not, you might have a bad/wrong sensor.

Hope this helps.

Re: coolant temp sensor...

THANKS! I will have to look into that sometime this weekend!

so if I have the gauge hooked up properly it should spike full hot when its on even without being connected?

Re: coolant temp sensor...

Not connected = full cold.
Grounded = full hot.
