I'm not 100% sure VATS is your problem - but it's the cheapest, easiest place to start.
Either you:
1) get a new lock cylinder, and get a new key made with the resistance value of the chip in your old key (maintaining security), or
2) get the resistance value from your key, go to Radio Shack and buy the $1 resistor, and put it inline under the steering column (foregoing security)
The biggest reason they fail is because inside the lock cylinder, there are tiny spring-loaded tabs that literally touch the key's chip as the key is inserted. After years of use, these springs often fail, or the contacts get worn, and the VATS system no longer gets the resistance value it's looking for to enable the starting function.
Getting a new lock cylinder replaces the issue with the contacts by replacing the worn contacts (available at any CarQuest for about $50, get new key made at ACE Hardware for $20).
Wiring in the correct resistor negates the lock cylinder alltogether, since the VATS system now gets the resistance value it's looking for all the time, but you no longer have the security function of the VATS system.
IF this is in fact your problem, the only "bull" about the solution is your inability or unwillingness to try it. In that case, I recommend you take your car (and a thick wallet) to the dealership, where they will replace all kinds of items until your wallet is too thin to be bothered with, at which time they'll send you on your way walking (since they still wouldn't have fixed your problem), unless you have enough left over for bus fare.
It's your choice boss - like the answer or don't, I won't lose any sleep over it - my Camaro starts everytime! But don't ask questions if you don't want answers! There's no guarantee any answer is a good one - but at least here on TGO you'll get answers, some good, some bad - but they ALL come from those of us that have been there before, and are trying to help others by passing along useful bits of info that have helped us in the past.
