New member and need some help

First off hi,

I just bought an 84 camaro 2.8l auto, with a bad starter, i replaced the starter already, but when i jump the solenoid, the starer spins, but the thing that pushes the starter gear to the flywheel isnt doing anything. the starter gear just spins w/o making contact.

Also, there was an alarm system on it that apparently was "going haywire" according to the PO, and their solution was to simply cut the wires to the loudspeaker. Yeah, that whole system's been ripped out.

From the looks of the ign lock, somebody tried popping it with a screwdriver at one point, considering the key BARELY fits it anymore, and you have to fight it to turn the key. Have a new lock set, that will be installed hopefully tomorrow.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the steering column? or any other ideas or info so i can get this freaking thing running?

Oh, and here are some pics

Re: New member and need some help

Hi There!

I started out with a 2.8 Berlinetta, great motor, never tapped rattled or smoked.

Not sure whats going on here though - is it a second hand starter or new one?Defiantely the correct one for the vehicle? Sometimes you need to shim them to get it to line up properly but I would think it should still engage.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Rob.

Re: New member and need some help

It is a new starter that i got from advanced. (after 2 trips, they gave me the wrong one the first time). right now it is shimmed, as the original was shimmed i put the shim in with the new starter.

Thought i might have a flat spot on the flywheel, so i removed the dust cover, and everything there is fine. while i was under there i had a friend crank the starter, and the gear spins, it just doesnt move out at all to grab the flywheel, just spins at the bottom of the post.

Im thinking the old alarm system is messing with something, thats preventing the starter from doing its thing. going to mess with it some more this week.

The alarm system has nothing to do with it.

The new starter sounds defective.

Bring it back, let them throw 12 volts on it so they can see and they should replace it.

Have them throw 12 volts on the replacement so you don’t have to R&R another defective unit.

Happy Racing!

When you see fog or “running” lights on in good weather beware. Low performance driver ahead.

How bout those nitwits too scared to drive without headlights in the daytime and the nitwits that need headlights for a little rain
