ECM problem?

how do you trouble shoot for a bad ECM? The problem I have is my Fan stays on all the time... I have a 200-185 fan switch and it will run as soon as the car is started (A/C and heat are OFF). And my coolant temp sensor acts wierd sometimes along with a wierd drop in the voltage gauge (once in a great while) the car is tip top shape New Red top battery, one year old altinator, new fan switch and new temp sensor (driver side head)... I would like to know how to trouble shoot the ECM. Thanks guys.

ECM Mayhem

You didn’t say if you bot the car with that problem.

Anyway, does the
Service Engine Soon light illuminate when starting the engine?

Happy Racing!

Turn the key on but don't start. The SES (service engine light) should blink and go out. Start the car it should stay out. This means the ECM and Memcal are communicating. If it doesn't blink and stays on and the fan is running, then you are running in limp home mode and there is a problem with ECM or Prom or wiring.

Re: ECM problem?

on a tbi f-body the ecm does not control the fans. The ecm does have a input for the ac request to raise idle speed when ac is on b8 if it is a 1228746 ecm. The coolant temp sensor in your passenger side head grounds the fan relay at 200f if thats what your saying its replace too. You need to start looking at the relay if the fan is coming on when the ket is on or see if the coolant temp sensor is grounded before 200f causing the relay to activate or the ac pressure switch.

Re: ECM problem?

Right, I missed the TBI part. But the light flash still is valid to test the ECM, correct?

Re: ECM problem?

If the ses light is on during idle, then there is a troublecode. Turn off Camaro, ground terminals A & B in the ALDL port, and note the codes. Then investigate the TC.

Re: ECM problem?

So if my ses light does as it should when key goes in then after a few mins starts going crazy whilst during a normal start up AND when connecting A and B in ALDL port and as lights flickering (as tho theres a bad wire)the engine drops revs, does this mean its ecm problem or electrical, my car 86 iroc TPI 5.0 has been 'broke' for 1 WHOLE YEAR NOW and its killin me im over in scotland and no want wants to work on her plz help heres a vid

this second vid is with the A AND B bridged, it wont read a code
