OK AFTER SEARCH, still confused
First off I want to get a new exhaust for my 305 but eventually I want to swap in a 350. Will hooker 2055's work for either motor?
All you guys that have the headers are talking about y-pipes. Isn't the point in headers to have true dual exhaust, or will running the headers with the right size y-pipe and cat-back provide the same benefits as true dual exhaust?
All I want is the HP increase and an awesome sound. I don't know what to expect for sound from a 305 but it seems to me like it should sound pretty nice with the right setup.
I'm open to any suggestions and apologize to those that have probably answered this 1000 times.

those headers are designed for small block chevys, so yes they will work on both the 305 and 350. sbcs have the same external dimensions.
the factory exhaust uses a y-pipe setup. shorty headers and a y-pipe are designed to copy the factory routing and cleanrance.
headers and a performance y-pipe, high flow cat and high flow 3" mandrel bent cat back and muffler will give good performance and sound.
duals can be done, but compromises are needed. do a search. i went the dual route and couldnt be happier with the performance gains and sound.
