3" TES into 2 1/4" pipe?
I have the LG4 carburated engine. I bought the Edelbrock TES for TPI with 3" outlet. I plan to do the 3" cat-back, but not right now. I have three options and three questions. If I keep the old cat for now, how do I connect the 3" y-pipe to it? If I get a universal Catco 3" cat, how do I connect it to the 2 1/4" pipe going back? If I get the direct fit 3" cat, how do I connect it (with the flange and ball) to the 2 1/4" pipe?
Thanks for your help./Luis

You will need a reducer no matter which choice you make. You can weld on the reducer to mate the 3" to the 2.25" system. So the choice is whether or not you want the reducer on the end of a cat or of your y-pipe. Since 3" universal cats and cat-back kits are relatively inexpensive i would just wait and put the system on as a whole. Wure you will gain some power with the headers but not nearly as much as when you complet the whole exhaust. I am not sure if it is worth the effort to do all that work and keep the stock cat-back. Can you save up another $400? That would net you a new cat-back and new 3" cat. I bet you could cut that price in half by getting used stuff.

I hear you, but, man, I started by wanting to replace the valve seals, but I got bit, and bought a cam, springs, chain, intake manifold, headers, carb rebuild kit. I have the engine half disassembled and ready to drop the y-pipe, cat and all.
Those exhaust manifolds were a bear to remove, so if I wait I will not put them back until I get all the parts (cat-back and cat). That could be a lot of downtime, as if I install the headers and wait, all the work will be from the cat back. Does this make sense? Thanks.
