Congrats on the baby girl! Yeah I hoarde parts too...I think its a chromasome thing

Just talked to Steven and the group purchase is still going on. He estimates another month until these are off of back order. for $300 I can wait though...thats a good price.

Re: 85-90 Fiberglass Wrap Around Rear Spoiler

I need one of these. This may be a dumb question, but will this fit fine with the existing 3rd brake light on the hatch?

Thanks!!

Sure it will, nothing's different. You may need to re-drill and fill deck lid holes if your car didn't originally have this type of spoiler.

On a serious note, I wonder how that affects the first 10 or so people that placed an order?

Re: 85-90 Fiberglass Wrap Around Rear Spoiler

Hawks has a decent reputation here on TGO, but me-thinks
I smell a rat in the wood-pile.
The only upside is that I haven't seen a charge on the
cr-card I gave. Unlike 80schild, this piece is not (yet at least)
in the critical path for my project.

PS. I think I was in the first 5...

Re: 85-90 Fiberglass Wrap Around Rear Spoiler

Well the guy that's going to paint my car said that could save enough paint to paint the spoiler separate, so I'm not going to let the spoiler hold me back from getting started.

I still haven't noticed a charge on my card either.

Re: 85-90 Fiberglass Wrap Around Rear Spoiler

I talked to the owner over 2 weeks ago. I ordered a spoiler and a differential cover. I just wanted the cover shipped, so I could finish my suspension and rear end upgrade. I talked to him almost 20 minutes. He has some definite issues with his suppliers. Not really his fault, but I would not expect a spoiler anytime soon.

They told me they were making them at the rate of one per day. I believe Steve was the one who told me that. So the impression I got was they made them there.

I talked to Bruce today for about 20 minutes. He stated that the spoilers are being made at another place so they are a better and more consistent quality. He's hoping they'll be available for everyone around the 3rd week in July.

Re: 85-90 Fiberglass Wrap Around Rear Spoiler

Sorry guys for the delay on the spoilers but as stated in an earlier post by Justin89Formy, we are producing these in a more efficient and consistent manner. The ones we've produced in the past 5-7 years take alot more time to make. We are still currently shipping out spoilers to our customers and that has been 3-4 a week. Out tentative date on the production of the new ones is the 3rd full week in July. We will keep you guys updated. The deadline for the group purchase was last week.
Thanks again for all your business and we look forward to getting these to you.

Wow, glad I joined this forum. Ordered one recently for my 89 GTA that I got 2 weeks ago and needs a wing. Hope I can call and get in on the group purchase, if so then that would bump up the number. Does anyone already have one of these? What is your opinion of the quality and appearance?

Thanks, Tony

Anybody heard anything else yet? The last time I called I was told they expected to ship them the 3rd week of July...and well...it's the 3rd week.

My car is getting sanded for paint right now and it sure would be nice to paint my spoiler at the same time as the rest of my car, but it looks like that won't happen : (

Re: 85-90 Fiberglass Wrap Around Rear Spoiler

I pretty much gave up, If they call I "might" still go ahead and buy one but that's going to be a longshot. I just bought a replacment frame for my corvette earlier this week so I can start on it again.

Are there any other sources for one of these? I'm going to do a repaint on my bird next spring and might grab one somewhere else then.

Re: 85-90 Fiberglass Wrap Around Rear Spoiler

FYI: the instructions and hardware is normally wrapped up in our packing paper (dog food bag haha) and at the bottom of the box so don't just pull the spoiler out and chunk the box. I have been trying to ge them to tape it to the spoiler but to no avail.

Thanks...

Re: 85-90 Fiberglass Wrap Around Rear Spoiler

Heres my report!

The spoiler is VERY well made. Fiberglass 2 piece construction and apparently hollow inside. It has plates bonded inside for the bolts to attach the corner pads and the third brakelight assy. All the holes are right where they need to be. THERE IS VERY LITTLE WIGGLEROOM WITH THIS! So measure before you start blowing holes in this nice piece. It comes with new hardware to mount it, including bolts, some L-brackets and 2 self tapping screws along with some foam pads as gaskets for the 3rd light. Curiously theres no gaskets for the bolt holes in the corners like the OEM piece had.
There is one defect in mine, there is a step where the spoiler meets the leading edge of the decklid (against the glass); the step on the passenger side starts sooner than the drivers side, by maybe 1/8". But you cant see it without looking across the trunk parallel to the decklid. That being said, for you showcar or serious blue ribbon 1000pt resto guys, it is something you'll have to either (A) deal with or (B) accept for what it is...something minor. This is VERY light weight, something you racer guys may want to think about. I would NOT use this spoiler to lift, close or support the trunk hatch; Id say it weighs less than half the original piece.

In addition to the 3rd brake light mount and a bolt in each of the 2 corners; there are 2 ways to attach the rest of it to the car. Little sheetmetal L brackets that screw into the spoiler and sort of hug the leading edge of the glass; and/or a pair of #9 (I think) self-tapping screws. I chose to use the screws because they locate the screw heads in the clips that are bonded to the glass. My spoiler has a tiny little twist to it, which isnt a problem, I just need to go buy a couple more screws (Im going to use each of the clips on the glass).

This requires a little forethought guys. You need to locate the spoiler in a dry fit with the brakelight and corner-bolts on the decklid; THEN you have to make some PENCIL marks on the spoiler to find (A) the opening of the clip; and (B) where the clip 'necks down' from the opening, since this is what holds the screwhead. Now that you have that, you need to take a thin ruler, hold it 90* to the spoiler and slide it under the spoiler up against the glass. This is because the spoiler is a bit springy, and you need to measure the distance the recessed pad for the clip is away from the clip on the glass. One of my mounting pads (before the screws are installed!) is .25" away from the window clip as it sits, and another is only .125" (eighth inch) off. This way you can stand the bottom of the screwhead off enough to get the clip to suck the spoiler right against the windowglass. Once you check your measurements of (1) how far the screwhead needs to slide foreward in each clip and (2) where each clip opens and necks down; along with (3) your gaps...bust out the drill and poke some pilot holes for your screws.

Im also trading in the screws in the kit for stainless steel ones. Nothing against the kit, I could have left them cad plated, or painted the screws in the kit and used both the L-brackets and the screws. I just didn't like trying to get the clips even and the fact that you might see them inside the window when you open the hatch

I had called Hawks when my delivery guy called me; because I wanted to find out what sort of surface prep this thing had before it got to me. The woman on the phone (Im horrid with names, so Bruce dont kill me) told me it comes in a gelcoat finish. THIS IS NOT THE CASE on my spoiler; its some type of heavy primer coat. I dont know if its duplicolor spray can stuff or 300 dollar a gallon PPG Surfacer. Its not Epoxy. Im going to inform Hawks, since this may be something they A) dont know or B) didn't agree to in their price. However, Im not concerned because this is a summer only car, stored inside. Im just going to wetsand it smooth, fill a couple low spots, shoot 2 coats of epoxy, 2 coats of black and 3 coats of clear.

I'll get some better pics in the morning.
Don't think you can just paint this, mine has some spots where the paint went on dry and has a stippled texture. THIS IS NORMAL for fiberglass repop parts guys, so DONT get pissed. My dad rebuilt a 62 vette...and the fiberglass repop parts were basically useless sometimes...they were so twisted and crooked, he had to cut them apart and glass them together. This is very high quality. When you DO paint it, make sure you clean it VERY WELL and scuff it as any thin spots in the primer might expose fresh fiberglass resin or release agent from the molding process.

The pics are cellphone pics, the one close up of an edge is where the shipping box ir something rubbed off some primer that was covering a small low spot.

To fill the very small low spots, use a glazing or icing putty; make sure its a 2-part putty (similar to Bondo but sands smoother) the stuff in the toothpaste tube is just reclaimed lacquer sludge and is usually junk.

Any questions, just ask.
Can a MODERATOR copy this single post into the body section (not the whole thread) since the install is a little technical

Re: 85-90 Fiberglass Wrap Around Rear Spoiler

good write up

I actually got a call from Hawks about the one I ordered thursday aftenoon, I told them I was still undecided (plus I was driving so I couldn't give CC info if I wanted to) and would call him back.

He told me I had until yesterday morning to decide or he would move on to the next person. I actually tried to call back about 20 minutes after my call with him thursday to give the go-ahead and my CC info.

No answer so I left a voice mail and sent a PM to cover all my bases, I wanted him to give me a call back asap so we can work out the details.

I never could get back through on the phone and kicked myself in the but not pulling over when he was on the phone and give him the information he needed.

I think I'm going to pass at this point, because three-four months ago I was ready to spend the money and the plans to work on my bird. Now I started back on my corvette and the $400 would come in handy to get my suspension rebuilt on that car.

Plus my swelled spoiler doesn't look THAT bad and if I ever get a wild hair to sell my bird, I want to get all the money back out of what I paid for the car...and adding the cost of the spoiler won't help the re-sell value.

Re: 85-90 Fiberglass Wrap Around Rear Spoiler

If there are extra's on this group buy I'd consider chiming in and scooping one up. Question though, I have an 86 with the light up high on the window - is there a chance of getting one without the 3rd brakelight in the tail? Or are the holes not visible without it?

Re: 85-90 Fiberglass Wrap Around Rear Spoiler

You would have needed to reuse the third brake light spoiler in the tail, since yours doesn'at have it you don't have anything to worry about. If there are holes underneath they can be filled it...I doubt there are though.

Re: 85-90 Fiberglass Wrap Around Rear Spoiler

They're expecting to ship mine next Friday.

What would be the best thing to use as a gasket at the mounting holes? Maybe a bead of silicone?

Re: 85-90 Fiberglass Wrap Around Rear Spoiler

there are 2 holes under the wing for the third brakelight box to mount to. it wouldnt take much at all to fill those with some tiger hair or something threaded and then grinding the head off and skimming over it. If you do use it like this, make sure you bold both corners good and use either the clips and screws or the screw method I used to mount it, since the light box helps mount the spoiler.

you could use a bead of sillycone as a gasket

Re: 85-90 Fiberglass Wrap Around Rear Spoiler

I found some internet here and got some pics in the email. My dad was kind enough to paint my spoiler for me, since I was called away due to the death of a friend.

Re: 85-90 Fiberglass Wrap Around Rear Spoiler

I ordered mine 6-23-09 and missed the group buy, but - I called today and was told my order is 15th outside the group buy and they are alternating delivery between the group and non-group orders and I should have mine in about two weeks.

Re: 85-90 Fiberglass Wrap Around Rear Spoiler

I don't know if there is another group buy or if that would happen? Considering the price for the spoiler went up. It is now advertised for 4 bills.
But thanks to everyone who participated in the buy and making it happen. I am very happy with mine, overall I think we all got a good deal. Thanks Hawks.
