Matt,
The opposite side (Pass) is gold.

She must have been smacked pretty good! It looks like it was welded in just above and behind the Top of the Driver's Door Window, down the Door Edge, and all the way to the Bumper.
The welds look crisp and clean. The welder was pretty good.
Whomever did the repairs they were halfway decent as I didn't notice anything wrong from a performance or appearance standpoint previously. The only damage we ever found was on the Pass. Side Rocker and that was definately a result of running over something like a curb.

Now that I think about it...... one of the axle cross links(?) DR, Side had a little ding/bend it in and we replaced it. I though it looked like it was jacked improperly or something had been run over/backed over.... Maybe it was a result of whatever accident the vehicle was in?

Sincerely,
Kurt

Sounds like they replaced the whole quarter (unlike the a-holes that replaced 1/2 of mine the first time). The right way to do it.

FWIW, when I had my car painted:

-we removed the hatch and weatherstripping and painted the hatch separately.

-removed the strikers and other crap in the door jambs. My painter did the jambs and door cut-in while painting the car. We rigged up something to hit the doors so they didn't hit the jambs when closed.

-painted all the gfx, mirrors, spoiler, etc off the car.

-taped/papered off the interior/t-top opening to limit overspray.

-be prepared to remove the door glass when you're done. You will be amazed at the overspray that gets on it, especially at the belt line and below. You can clean it up with some 0000 steel wool.

I can't wait to see the results.

If you're taking her that far down to paint why not remove the windows from the doors and the windshield. This way you could clean/polish the side windows completly while they're out. With the windshield out the channel can be check for any rust spots(my '95 Jimmy had a couple the glass shop repaired when the y replaced the windshield). And you can install new weatherstrip and maybe think about a new windshield.it does make for a world or difference unless your's is very good and can be cleaned/polished.The hatch glass can be taped/masked inside and out if you don't want to remove it.

The quarter panel needing replaced sucks. I hope it got the frame fixed in the process (If it needed a whole new replacement quarter panel then chances are very good it bent the frame).

The damage was probably done in the 80's when the car was still newer, most quarter panel replacement jobs would definetly total out a 3rd gen camaro in the condition you picked it up in, so it had to have been the original, or 2nd owner.

Have you ever ran a carfax report on the Camaro? Or do you not have the right VIN numbers either?

The carfax report might come up with some interesting information!

Great job so far, you guys make me jealous... I havent even bothered touching my camaro for the last eh... month or two atleast lol.

TGO Guys,

I sure wish we could remove the windshield. This is one serious problem area we should address.....The windshield was installed improperly and should be removed and re-installed. Apparently, it moved/slipped to the Pass. Side after it was installed. There is a large gap at the DRSide and NO GAP on the Pass.Side. In addition, the plastic trim was never installed. I may yet pull the windshield but Im trying not to get tooooooo carried away.

Really, we were hoping for a DECENT paint job. Heck, anything would be an improvement over what she looks like now. But this was not planned to be the FINAL live with it forever paint job. Derek and I thought we might get a little crazier in a year or two maybe even pull the motor back out and do the engine bay and every hidden nook & cranny.

According to the Painter Guy the better we do the prep....The Better the paint (OBVIOUSLY!) We are on a pretty limited budget so I can't ask the guy to get toooo carried away. I know the painter will do a final wash and wet-sand but he's not prepared to fix/repair anything major we missed. Because we are doing a pretty decent prep. we should end up with something much better than the $250 Ambassador Paint Job from MAACO..... We're not expecting a $3000 paint job...... Just something Derek can be proud of.

So far we've removed and prepared....
Door Window Sweeps & Seals
T-Top Seals & Center Trim (Blasted Primed & Painted)
All GFX (Front, Sides, Doors, R.Qtrs. - Primed &Wet Sanded)
Antenna (Rust Damage Repaired)
Turn Signals & Side Markers (Painted & Polished)
Mirrors (Sandblasted, Primed, Wet Sanded)
Fuel Door (Primed & Wet Sanded)
Front Inner Fender Splash Guards
Functional Cross-Fire Scoop (Cleaned Plastic Welded & Painted)
Emblems (Nose, GFX, Tail)
Wipers & Cover Screen
Grills & Plate (Cleaned & Painted)
Plastic Cover (in front of Hood Latch - Cleaned and Painted)
Rear Spoiler Pieces (3) (Need a little attention yet......)

Tomorrow we get:
Door Handles & Locks (Both! Thanks LO-Tec)
Remainder of the Interior.
Complete Wet-Sand (Bow to Stern - Port to Starboard)
MAYBE the windshield...... You got me thinking about that one.....
Headlamps, Tail Lamps & License Plate will be removed at the Painter's Shop.

For now....we have to deal with a budget.....AND WE'RE WAY OVER! I have been EXTREMELY tight-wad and still we're over $4000. We could buy a ThirdGen in decent shape for about 1/2 of that. We still need to purchase New Molded Carpet, Tires, & Center Caps for the Stock Rims. Regardless of the Budget..... Father & Son have been having a great time and that's made it worth every cent we (I've ) spend so far.

Sincerely,
Kurt

P.S. We're even cleaning & painting the LUG caps for the new wheels!!

Kurt and Derek,

I wouldnt bother taking off the windshield this time around. It is a MAJOR pain to get to go back on. I'm not even sure if you can get the proper adhesive at many shops.

Effort, Time, Money > Effect in this case.

Any trim around the windshield should be removed for sure though. Just mask up the windshield good when you drop her off.

Just a thought... if you still have your original seat, you should probably put that in there with a big trash bag over it instead of a cover for your nice 4th gen ones.

Too Late... Window is coming out NOW!

We purchased the Sealer (2-Tubes) and a "UNIVERSAL" seal as well as two pieces of Piano Wire for the removal. Seemed a little stupid to let this ugly crap go (see photo). We have to install the seal with the window as it clips around the edges. I think we may have gotten the wrong seal although the guy assured me this is what they use on all the Camaros.

Window is almost out...... more stories later....

Anybody got a close-up of the edge of their window????? We gotta check this seal.......

Sincerely,
Kurt & Derek

there are two different types of factory seals. the 82's used a much smaller seal that ive heard isnt as good as the 85(?) and up seals. i just had my windshield replaced and the seal the glass company used it identical to my factory one and looks very nice. ill get ya a pic tomorrow. as far as replacing it yourself make sure you do some reasearch. i do colision repair and ive talk with the window guys and this is definatly something id leave up to them. youve go to make sure it seals right and theres special adhesion (sp) promotors you need to put on the glass and the car. im sure you guys could do it just take your time and research it. once you have the glass in the car with the seal on it tape down the corners on the top so te seal wont lift where it makes the curve. the glass guys had me do that to mine and then just pull the tape off once the urethaine dries.

Window seal replaced..... GOOD TO GO!

Matt & TGO Guys.....
WELL.....It's DONE! As soon as I made the decision to remove and replace the seal we raced over to the Window Place to get the supplies before they closed for the Holiday. The seal is definately a little different than those we have seen on 82's but it's such a major improvement we could care less. We (mostly I) were SOOOOO scared we were gonna break it getting it out... but it wasn't that bad. Probably because it was not installed correctly to begin with!

I've replaced a windshield or two in the past but we asked the guy at the Glass place to give us a few pointers. He told us not to put anything on the window or the car except the sealant. He told us to scrape off everything we could and clean it with a dry (no chemicals) cloth. Apparently some cleaners or chemicals could screw up the special sealant. He also mentioned that we needed to place the glass on within 3 minutes of dispensing sealant from the tube. The seal actually came with a bit of sealant INSIDE the groove that fits over the window. As soon as it was attached to the window it was STUCK on there....

It looks really really good...... There was absolutely NO evidence of rust or corrosion under the window....That was a surprise! The rubber seal even covers some of the little chips the previous owner put into the under side of the glass (The window was probably used when it was installed the last time).

We are pretty confident that this new seal will be less prone to leaks and it was pretty darn easy to install the thing. THANKFULLY WE DIDN'T BREAK THE WINDOW!! and We Saved $200 doing it ourselves!!!!!!

Sincerely,
Kurt & Derek

Windshield job looks great guys.I'm glad you didn't find any problem with the lip area, especially since the windshield wasn't installed properly. The glass shop finding the problem with my Jimmy is why I asked in the first place(I waited while they installed and had to wait for 2 hours after for it to cure before they would let me leave).T-top bar looks very good too.Mine has some surface rust that can be repaired but I'm leaving everything as is until it can be done right.I keep her covered except when she goes out to stretch her legs.I have to repair her right quarter behind the door.I hopefully say repair but more than likely have to replace as there's damage in the jam too.

And thankyou scottmoyer I had completly forgotten about Ecklers.

When will we get it back??

We really don't know. The guy doing the work made a point of mentioning to us when he took a look at the car....."Drop if off and don't call me... I'LL CALL YOU"! He wanted us to drop the it off during the first week of Jan (post-holiday).

I can only assume he's had some Pain-In-The-Butt customers in the past. The guy is a line Manager at the Ford Assembly Plant in Atlanta. He does painting on the side. He has a pretty decent booth & workshop and was painting a two-tone '56 Chevy and a '65(+/-) Mustang when we were at his shop. The Old Chevy looked fantastic, the Mustang was primer only.

I think we can expect to get it back in about 2-weeks from the time we drop it off. He painted my friends Pick-Up truck and it was done in less than a week. He knows this is not a daily driver so we may wait a little longer..... We hope to drop it off on Monday Afternoon if we get everything ready......

Sincerely,
Kurt & Derek

Superb job guys! That windshield install looks fantastic! In my autobody shop it took me several times to get down the whole part of laying down the sealant correctly before I got it, sounds like you guys got it on your first try!

Really freshens up the look of it.

Curious why you guys didnt want to leave the windsheild off and just mask it up for when it was going to get painted? The rubber strip will have to be pulled back a little and taped for paint now, right?

Gold Emblems are a REAL PROBLEM!

Bobby,
We thought about it briefly but we do need to drive the car about 15 miles to the painter's place. I don't think it would be legal to drive without it. It's also probably a lot safer (for the glass) if it's installed. I guess I was just plain uncomfortable leaving it out...

I am concerned about the painter getting any paint on it... It's nice and clean and soft... I hope it doesn't get any paint on it !

BACK TO HISTORY AND RESTORATION:....
We have tried everywhere for GOLD emblems for this car. NO ONE and I MEAN NO ONE is offering GOLD emblems. If you want Silver or Gray.... NO PROBLEM! [GOLD .... FORGET IT! I'm now going to double-check every company ANYONE has ever mentioned ONE MORE TIME.... ANY IDEAS???

Sincerely,
Kurt

P.S. We missed it on the list posted above but we WILL be buying the reproduction stickers for the Lower Body.... No point spending the money today.... We'll wait till the car is back and mostly re-assembled.

I've looked thru most companies mentioned and you're right Kurt about the Gold emblems.I'm lucky mine are in good shape. The one emblem I haven't seen yet,or the decals for the side GFX,is the Crossfire Injection one for the back bumper.
Also the shade of black on the stripe on the tail lights.Would you say that's a low gloss black?Or would it be safe to say the black should match the end caps where the license plate lights are?The original ones on her are fading out but I got an excellent pair of Sport Coupe lights that I'm going to paint the stripe on.
On the stripes a lot of companies carry them. When scottmoyer mentioned Eklers I looked there and they carry the complete kit.

The original lustre of the black stripe is about the same as black electrical tape. It's also about the same as the trim around the rear window.

Thankyou scottmoyer,I've started prep on the lights but wasn't sure of the right shade of black.I have a couple bulbs out so i would have to take the lights out anyhow so might as well do the swap. With me it's one little thing at a time.

82/83 License Plate Lamps Different...

Hope you don't ever break one because there are some difference in these brackets. We found one (lucky day) to replace a broken one. We also purchased an additional newer set to prep for the restore. A previous owner put a couple stickers on the originals and cleaning and light sanding couldn't repair the damage the adhesive did to the plastic. Unfortunately, we could not find a "Plastic Compatible Paint" in a low gloss/matte finish. Ours are gonna be a little too glossy but it's better than sticker damage. We're still on the lookout for a set of '82/83's in real nice shape. I think the factory made the design change (see photo) as the hard plastic bumpers won't put up with much abuse.

TGO Want to Buy....GOLD Rocker Emblems
I've posted to the want to buy section and I usually send an e-mail to anyone parting out a early ThirdGen and mention my needs. I've also posted to Want-It-Now on E-bay. Still NO LUCK

Kurt

That's good info on the plate lamp brackets. The set on her now are in good shape but the lights themselves having spidering in the lens. The ones I was kindly given when I bought my gold wheels are in better shape but the lights themselves are off a SC(maybe look for a set of these for better brackets for Derek's car). That's why I asked about the shade of black for the stripe.Scottmoyer said it's similar to black electrical tape in color which makes it a similar shade to the plate lamp brackets.I'm going to look around for likely matching paint then do some test cards to see.It may take some time to find the right one.May have to go to model paint to find a match but not sure how durable this will be.I have a low gloss engine paint that I believe is very close(Dupli-Color # DE1634 - Low Gloss Black)if you want to give it a look Kurt.It is an engine paint so i'll have to try it on my old lights first. Also make sure the water plugs are in the tops of each light section - soak them in silicone spray before you install them.

Thanks Mr. Lo-Tec,

It was a good move getting these door handles off.

It's a little discouraging. Every time I think we're just about ready Dad finds something else that need to be prepared before we can take the car to the painter. Now he has to weld the bottom of the passenger door because the bad door selas made a rust hole in the bottom.

Here's a picture dad made.

That totally sucks, but atleast you're getting it dealt with now before the new paint rather than afterwards and the rust spreads and starts bubbling up your brand new paint job!

Phess11,
Thanks for the Info. We have been in touch with "FAST68" about his Z-28 Emblems, unfortnatley we struck out there. But.... We were able to score a set from "Kevin L." in Iowa.

I found a TGO guy in Canada that I've made a commitment to for the nose grills. However, I haven't heard back from him in a couple days. Hopefully, there is not a problem with the grills he said he had. I'll wait a couple more days and try to contact him again.

Those '82-'84 Grills are a real problem. Used grills are normally very brittle and I don't believe I've seen any reproductions available. I'm sure they will be extremely expensive as a repro.

We should not have a problem getting the reproduction Scoop Stickers from YearOne and the Lower Body Decal Reproductions should not be a problem either. However, the Rear Bumper "GOLD" Z-28 Sticker/Emblem may be even harder to find than the GFX Emblems were. These rear-end stickers don't come off too easily and unlike the GFX Emblems they're usually trashed once they're pulled off.

I have not yet found a photo of an original '82 five-spoke rim with the Z-28 Center Cap and Plastic Cover Lug Nuts. I am beginning to wonder if the "Z-28" on our rims is supposed to be "GOLD" also that will make for an impossible find it that's the case..

This GOLD is a real PITA!

Sincerely,
Kurt

if you wanna take off ur rear bumper embelm and still be able to reuse it u can. just apply a little heat to it to loosen up the glue and it should peel off rather easy. if you can apply the heat from behind that would be best but is not required. if you are going to do it from the front be careful not to melt the emblem. ive done many emblems like this at work and have been able to reuse them.

Kurt,
Attached is the best picture I've found of our common gold wheel with the center cap/emblem.The best info is the gold wheels use the same black center cap with the silver fade Z28 emblem as the silver wheels used.Brock's Camaro's is the best place so far to get the factory style caps - the ones with the metal retainer clips-.Hawk's and F-Body motorsports carries them too I believe.Beware of the aftermarket ones that just use the plastic retainer clips because they have a tendency to fly off.Still haven't found a source for the gold GFX or back bumper emblems(I'm lucky mine are in good shape). Also I have the GXF CFI decals(which are good for now) and the CFI emblem on the back bumper too(well you can see the outline).I may make an attempt at removing and repainting this one.

Something I found is a pic exactly like mine(well from this angle she looks like this. The passenger door on mine is dark blue...LOL).The 59 beige really makes the gold GFX and stripes stand out.Notice the wheels too.

Guess we wasted a whole bunch of time fixing up the plastic covered ones....CRAP! We'll be looking for the proper ones now...

We haven't spent any time looking for the Cross-Fire Injection GFX Stickers. We should as that would make the exterior correct for this car...... However, we don't have Cross-Fire injection re-installed yet (nor have we been able to purchase one yet). One of the Guys pointed us to a CFI set-up on E-Bay and I fell asleep at the wheel and missed out on it... I was watching it and waiting until it got close to the end of the auction and ended up waiting too long. DUH! It went for only $175 and I'm kicking my self in the butt for missing a golden (pun intended) opportunity......

Unfortunately, we already pulled it off the rear bumper. The emblem HAD a significant amount of paint on the edges from previous paint jobs. Derek did a decent job of cleaning up the edges. He tried to do the polish deal on this (like the marker lamps) but the texture is a little soft and buffing didn't do anything for it. If necessary we could re-use this one but that wouldn't be our favorite/first choice.

As you have seen.... we have GOLD paint & overspray on EVERYTHING from the previous paint jobs. We were able to score a new(er) set of mirror seals but we also need seals for the door and hatch locks. We can probably make those out of a little normal gasket material. I am considering a new complete lock set (Five (5)- Locks; Doors, Hatch, Cargo Cover, Rear Glove). The set should come with new seals and we have a mix-match of keys for the car. We may end up just having them re-keyed. We've been able to find 4-Lock sets on e-bay but no 5-lock sets.

The Painter Guy is ready....ready or not the Z-28 must be delivered Sunday afternoon as promised.

Sincerely,
Kurt

On the lockset make sure,if you get a used set, that it's off a pre '86 car.I got a complete set off Ebay and the hatchlock is different on the later cars. And of course a new set will come with new seals and I believe you can get a seal set separate.
When the day comes to prep mine for paint it won't be so bad because she's never been repainted,as far as I can tell.Paint actually looks better than the paint on my '95 Jimmy.
You mentioned missing out on a CFI setup on Ebay. Here's another one a little more expensive but the intake looks clean enough to eat off. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=8026990519
And check this item out too.I may go this route when I can afford it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...1537%26fvi%3D1

Tomorrow is the final prep day

TGO Guys,
Well tomorrow (actually today) is the final opportunity to prep the car for paint. We have a heck of a list of "Things-To-Do" to finalize the Z-28. Not the least of which is replacing the door hinge bolts and pins and doing a final wet-sand of several large areas. My machinist helped me finish the upper hinge pins and although I should have spent the time installing grease fittings... it's probably not necessary. Hopefully, we managed to get all the measurements correct. We have to make a quick trip to the J.Yard to ****** a small chunk of tin for the bottom of the pass door (relatively minor rust repair) and I'll double check the fit of the new pins on a Junker before I rip Derek's doors off.

Hopefully, we'll post a pick tomorrow of a car just waiting for the spray booth.....

We've got a bit of a cold snap (by Georgia Standards) and it's gonna get be little chilly out there. We're what our Southern Friends refer to as "DAMN-YANKEES" so we should be able to manage a day of "Georgia Winter"....

Later...
Kurt

yeah, got down to like 30* last night here in Warner Robins...it was downright frigid in a car with no heat....(don't normally need stuff like that down here, so its been pretty low on the priority list on the project car...)

Passenger Door Woes...

TGO Guys....
In the 11th hour we found that the passenger door was in much worse shape than we had anticipated. We cut the bottom off of a J.Yard Donor vehicle and spent the entire evening (and most of the morning..) Cutting, Welding, and Grinding.

The damage caused by water inside these doors can be unreal!! We didn't realize how bad it was until we started grinding at it and there was NOTHING left. We could only find two(2) decent donor doors in the entire J.Yard (of about 15 Candidates). One was a perfect door and we didn't want to destroy it.

Might want to go check your door seals!

Thankfully ours is done!

Sincerely,
Kurt

It's all in the Painter's Hands NOW!

Well she's in the Paint Booth.....

We did the best we knew how to do and hopefully she'll look good when she's done.

Derek will be busy during the next week cleaning and repairing some of the interior stuff. Gonna try and do a better job covering the headliner and various tedious little chores until "Buster" gives us a call.

I will be parting with some of my hard earned cash on Decals, Hub Caps, Emblems, & Other restore items......

We expect no more than two weeks....

Sincerely,
Kurt

Well from your posts it looks like you and Derek did an excellent job at prepping her.Now it's the time of wait and see, almost like waiting on someone having surgery or giving birth....LOL.If your painter does as good on his end as you have she will look great.
I did find a paint that,to me,is a perfect match for the black end cap/license plate brackets. It's Dupli-Color p#DA1603 Semi-Gloss Black. It's an acrylic enamel so it should hold up well. And it gives the same sheen of electrical tape that scottmoyer suggested.I did a test on a tail light I have that's cracked.Main thing is masking the lines really close.I'm going to do the really nice Sport Coupe tail lights I got with my wheels.I wish i had a digital camera to post my results.

GOT PAINT!!!!

TGO Friends,
The painter called today and said "COM' 'N GIT 'ER." The paint job looks very good and certainly better than one of the bargain outfits. It's NOT a $3000+ paint job but well worth what we paid for it....

It was a miserable ride home.... Chilly, Raining, NO T-Tops, NO Windows, Headlamps pointing into the trees, Wipers Throwing water INTO the car..... But she's home and covered up. We would have left her there but tomorrow is supposed to be even worse and we figured Buster needed the Garage. We took a couple photos in the Paint Booth after we installed the tail lamps for the ride home.... It does look pretty sharp... I know the photos stink but what do ya'll think so far? We've got a ton of work to get it all back together properly..... But I am very pleased we took the time to remove the GFX and get some good paint under there....

Here are a couple poor photos but it's the best we'll be able to do for a couple days (because of the impending rain)......

Sincerely,
Kurt & DEREK
