Re: Factory Aluminum Goodies & Lightweight Parts List/Topic
All this talk on the aluminum bumper support got me to thinking(dangerous sometimes),I checked my '83 Z28 and she has one. That along with the composite hood makes her a bit lighter.Well at least it offsets her having all power equipment.
And Jproz that's a great point on the hollow 36mm(and 34mm)stabilizer bar being much lighter than the solid bar.Very noticeable difference between the hollow 36mm bar and my '83's original solid 32mm bar.

Re: Factory Aluminum Goodies & Lightweight Parts List/Topic
My 83 Camaro parts car has the aluminum bumper support... unfortunately it hit a telephone pole head on...
Caboobaroo,
About your 88 and aluminum calipers... I know that the non 1LE cars would have cast iron rear calipers... I would like some pix. and a SPID sheet, might be an interesting find.

Re: Factory Aluminum Goodies & Lightweight Parts List/Topic
Its been awhile, but is there anyone out there with more info to add to the list? Right now I'm talking with a guy thats very involved with SCCA here in New England. He is trying to see if he can find anybody that has raced or still owns an originally-raced-new 3rd Gen. Hopefully he might come up with some new info or interesting leads on parts or ideas for our cars. Then again, most of these cars were beaten and discarded, so we might not get much. If I'm really lucky, maybe I might find one of those elusive aluminum Firebird hoods or a fender or two.

Here's Some More:
~ Door Jamb Wedges: Found on Ttop equipped cars. 4 pieces total, mounted on the upper part of the doorjambs & doors. Early years are metal & riveted in, later cars are plastic & screwed in.
~ Rear Hatch Rubber Pads: these are small serrated rubber pads mounted at the very rear lip on the 1/4 panel where the hatch meets on '91 & '92 cars.
~ Iroc Hood to Firewall Brace Rod: Thin metal rod that mounts on the pass side hood hinge/fender & onto the firewall just above the A/C box. (top circle below)
~ Iroc Framerail to Front Strut Tower Brace Rod: Thin metal rod that mounts on the pass side framerail & onto the pass side inner fender/strut tower next to the pass side exhaust manifold, just in front of the A/C box. (lower circle below)
Thanks to John in RI

Re: Factory Aluminum Goodies & Lightweight Parts List/Topic
If your looking for a SCCA car, talk to 1LEPrototype. He use to race the cars "back in the day". Still has his car. Lots of prototype stuff. Similar to the player's series. Where the 1LE got it's roots. The SCCA was different in a few ways.

It's not aluminum, but I'm suprised that no one has mentioned the torque arms with the cutouts or whatever they were called. I've got one off an 85 WS6 car and ive seen one on an 87 WS6 car.

Re: Factory Aluminum Goodies & Lightweight Parts List/Topic
That is the type that I was talking about. I have had 3 of these cars, and worked on a few more, the stock one on my 86 (V6) was a solid one, as was the one on the other 86 (V8) I had. An 86 that I worked on had the solid one, as did an 85 camaro I own. The only two that have the cutout one that I have, that i have seen were the two trans ams.

Re: Factory Aluminum Goodies & Lightweight Parts List/Topic
The aluminum fenders were probably specially stamped parts, I doubt they were available over the counter. It was a way for a racing team to cheat... One of the owners might have contracted them out to be made, by this time a lot of money was being invested in several by some of the teams to gain an advantage.

I've heard about fenders and deck lids but never seen proof myself . Like John said, prob a custom job. Some shops specialize in that stuff.

I have even heard of door skins... But a good fabricator could make them... Winning races has to do with not only the winnings jackpot, it has more to do with sponsors. If you get some good sponsors the money invested in a race team outweighs the cost...
