T/A taillight restore

i have a 85 T/A with the smoked taillights. the black piece underneath the smoked has pulled away i guess becuase in the daylight you cant see all of the black pattern. they look great with the lights on i would rather not buy a set if i can fix the originals. i already have the taillights apart just dont know how to restore them. also where can you get the black goo for when i put them back together.

Re: T/A taillight restore

The "goo" is a hard plastic grid, that just pulls away from the clear portion of the outer lens.

The black goo is designed to keep water and moisture from getting inside the taillight. The closest product I've found so far that duplicates the original goo is 3M "Windo-Weld" rectangular bead windshield ribbon sealer part no.# 08614. I used this when I reassembled my taillights after restoring them and it worked like a charm. Just like factory.

If the black plastic grid is peeling away from the outer lens, you may need to find a new taillight at the junkyard. The black grid is heat bonded to the outer lens I believe. Once it starts peeling away, there's really no easy way to fix it (that I know of). However, there is a member here who converted his "grid style" taillights to a "honeycomb style" so maybe he has an answer on how to fix them.

He stripped the stock grid out completely (it was already peeling loose bad), polished the inside nice & clear, then painted on the circles (was going to do honeycomb, but he ended up doing circles instead)
