Re: Members post your RPO codes!

I am the owner of a 1991 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with the 4L60 Automatic transmission and the 5.7 L98 engine. I’m not sure how many were produced with this color combination and engine but I know it’s rare (Black exterior and Beechwood tan leather interior) It’s been in storage for 28 years and has only 121 ACTUAL miles on it. I am the 4th owner and it was originally ordered in NY. and now resides in MA. If anyone has stats on how many of these cars were produced with this combination, I would love to hear from you?

Nice car, Mike! No one will be able to tell you how many were made in that combination, since records were not kept of specific combinations.

Dagwood, oh yes it’s started once or twice per month and driven around the block in spring, summer and fall as well. It gets a lot of head turns every time I stop at the gas station to put some gas in it. I’m the 4th owner but before me, some things had to be replaced by the 3rd owner due to it sitting so long. The fuel pump, filter, injectors and spark plugs have all been replaced along with some rubber bushings. The intermediate pipe clamp also had to be replaced. Every part was replaced with original brand new AC Delco parts, including the exhaust clamp which was hard to find. I have all the originals put back in the new packages to preserve them with the car. Now it always has at least half tank of gasoline and is actually driven, even if it’s around the block. As far as I know, it’s the lowest mileage 1le out there today. If anyone else has a lower mileage one, please let me know?

I seen a black 1991 camaro z28 w/tan interior drive by me when I was 19 yes old and said to myself “I’m gonna buy one of those!” I ended up buying a 91 RS (burgandy colored) a month later. A year after that I found a 1991 Z28 5.7 (blue) and had it for 6 years before it was sideswiped and totaled. All these years later I was able to find the black one I always wanted and to find a 1le on top of that BRAND NEW with the plastic still on it, is truly a dream come true for me. Thanks for the comments, I’m glad you like it!

As Leonard mentioned, there isn't a known (public) record from GM showing X amount built with A,B,C options. They did keep track of some major options and released that information to dealers for helping in planning and ordering to show what was selling.

That said, Compnine is a 3rd party resource that has GM VINs and their RPOs. With that information, and their scripts, you can get some information. Some years are less complete than others but the later ThirdGen years are much more populated.

Compnine shows 4 - 1991 Camaros with the Black/Beechwood, L98 and 1LE option of the 12,154 Z28s in their database for 1991.

Be sure to check out all the pics. Enjoy!

The car is signed by everyone on the line that built it. I've seen the car in person, and it's incredible!

Your car and his would be pretty cool parked next to each other!

This is my 88 iroc, it’s clearly a work in progress, I like that I don’t see any of these with the brown leather.

Do you think that’s factory upholstery? I have never seen something like that before.

Not me. RPO code 62C is for cloth seats.

I agree, but its also got the fisher rpo code, was not sure if maybe that's where the leather came from?

Fisher RPO code?

The leather seats have a different RPO code from the cloth and it depends on the style of the seat. You have the RPO code for cloth seats so the car came from the factory with cloth seats. At some point the seats were recovered.

Another indicator is that I doubt the leather (or vinyl) would have held up how it appears in the picture given the rest of the deterioration overall (paint, sun visors, etc.,).

Re: Members post your RPO codes!

Looking at my Car Order Worksheet for 1987 Firebird, the C appears to represent Custom, not cloth. It just happens that the custom material is cloth.

The standard cloth interior is designated with B, possibly for Base. And the leather interior is designated with E. I see no vinyl options for 87 Firebirds, so I can't say what that designation might be.

For example, in his color, 62 Camel, the Base interior comes with Ripple cloth and is 62B9. The Custom interior comes with Pallex cloth and is 62C9. And the leather interior (for TA and GTA only) is 62E9. Camaros would have to be designated similarly. So his 62C would be Camel Custom (cloth, because that's what the custom material is).

I understand what you're saying, but I meant C indicates Cloth.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...ml#post2600627

The build sheets that I have reference 62 as the color and C as cloth in their description. Now the description is shorthand, but it does not reference custom in the description.

Here is an example

Far right "62C - SADLE DLX CLO"

Regardless, the 62C is Cloth for the Camaro so the pictured seats are not how the car was optioned from the factory.

Re: Members post your RPO codes!

The GM RPO designation for cloth seats can include several different single letters appended to a two-digit color code. It is important to understand that these designated letters can change yearly, even if the seat/color/material stays the same. GM can do what ever it wants, and has done exactly that for some years. So, it's important to know the individual year codes.

I can tell you that typically with GM, and I mean typically, if you have three different letters appended to a two-digit color code in a single year, the B does not indicate Base, the C does not necessarily indicate Cloth, and the D does not indicate Dreamy, or any other word that begins with a D. Those three letters typically indicate a hierarchy of the available seating surfaces. It's kinda like Good, Better, Best, with the lower letter being the Good.

In my 1982-1992 Firebird book, the 1987 Firebird had a Leather/Cloth interior that was not appended with a number (as is typical for leather seating surfaces), but since the seats had some cloth, the letter was an E: So, for 1987 Firebird, there was 19E Black Leather/Cloth, 62E Camel Leather/Cloth, and 82E Medium Gray Leather/Cloth. I unfortunately, do not have a 1982-1992 Camaro book, as I cannot find enough verified production information to feel good about publishing it. I do however, have the 1993-1997 and 1998-2002 Camaro books.

For the 1987 Camaro, there were four seating material choices, Standard Cloth, Optional Cloth, Custom Cloth, and Custom Interior with Leather. Those choices are laid out in the dealer brochure, but the RPOs will not be indicated. You would want a dealer order guide for that. The last year for full vinyl seating in the Camaro was 1986.

Hope this helps.

Re: Members post your RPO codes!

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if this car is anything special or just a low optioned car. It was ordered by a friend in late 86 early 87 to be used in the Firestone Firehawk show room stock endurance race series with IMSA. Any help is appreciated Thanks

Looks like an 87 Camaro IROC Z with a 305 (LB9) 5 speed and RPO G92 - see more info here : https://www.thirdgen.org/1987-chevy-camaro/

G92 for 1987 required the following options:
  • 5.0 TPI (LB9) Limited slip differential (G80) Rear disc brakes (J65)
  • Engine oil cooler (KC4)
G92 (performance axle ratio) available only on IROC-Z with 5.0 TPI (LB9). G92 was available on IROC-Z convertible in 1987. All 1987 350 TPI (B2L) IROC-Z's came standard with the 3.27 BW rear end and everything that was included with G92 but did not have the G92 RPO code because everything that came with the option was mandatory; this changed in 1988 however when a 2.77 BW rear was standard and G92 had to be specified to get the 3.27's. All 1987 350 TPI (B2L) IROC-Z's required J65 rear disc brakes, G80 limited slip differential, and KC4 engine oil cooler.

Cool car, how many miles, condition, etc?

Post up some pics

Re: Members post your RPO codes!

Good Afternoon Everyone!

New 3rd gen owner here, and of course this my first post/comment. It was fun deciphering these codes. The car is an unmolested "87 Formula with 86k miles.
Can someone point me in the right direction on how many '87 Formulas came with the 4-way adjustable seats? What I'm reading can't be right.
Also what mouldings is codes B84 and B87? Would that be the bumperettes?
