Steel Driveshaft W/Dampener

I've done a search and I have goolgled it too without any positive results. I found a steel driveshaft w/dampener on a '02 Firebird. In the pic is my stock steel driveshaft from my '91 Formula at the top. It weighs about 12 lbs and is 2.50 in in diameter. Below is the driveshaft from the "02 Firebird. It weighs about 19 lbs and is 2.75 in in diameter. What is the story behind this. Is this better than the LE1 aluminum DS because it has a dampener and just as good as the LS1 aluminum DS with the dampener? This is the second one I've seen. Both on '02 Firebirds. I cannot find a lot of info on this steel driveshaft w/dampener. Thanks.

Re: Steel Driveshaft W/Dampener

I would imagine that the later 4th gens were a bit stronger for the extra HP thus the extra weight... I believe my drive-shafts have the weight... I think it is more for a balancing thing than a dampener...

Re: Steel Driveshaft W/Dampener

The shaft with the damper will have very little positive effect on vibration, and its still a stock steel DS. A properly designed and balanced shaft does not need a damper at the low RPMs they experiance in our cars. Might be better than yours if it has better U-joints or yours is out of balance...

Re: Steel Driveshaft W/Dampener

Actually the extra weight he was talking about about 7# I think would have more of a decrease in power... Seeing that they say the Aluminum drive-shaft frees up 1hp, I would think this would be around 1-2hp in the wrong direction.

With that said, a properly balanced DS will also free up power as the vibrations would eat up power...
