Wierd shifter ****??

My 91 rs had an aftermarket shift **** on it when I got it. It just set over the threads and a set screw held it tight. The wierd thing is the threads on the shifter. It has 3/8 pipe threads. Is this the norm? I have never seen a shifter with this. It appears to be factory. I drilled out an 8 ball and epoxied a 3/8 pipe joint in it and it works great. I just have never seen a shifter stalk with 3/8" pipe thread.
