HELP PLEASE!

I have a 1986 camaro. and i have a 1991 firebird which i am parting out. Well here is my delemia i had to put a new ignition starter switch in my car. and i took apart my steering wheel to put a new lock and cylinder in as well. Now i can't get the steering wheel lock plate in with the clip b/c the center where the bearings are. are going bad and when i press the plate on to put the clip in the shaft slides down and wont' let me get the clip in. Here is my solution if possible. i want to take my 91 firebird steering column out and put it in my 1986 camaro. will this work to save money and hassle. I broke my turn signal switch shifter when i jumped in my car and being little tall my knee broke it off. Now i need to buy a new one or hoping the 91 will work. here is the thing the 91 has cruise control and possible air bag. and also has vats which my 86 don't. can i just not use vats use my new lock and cylinder and not use the cruise control. PLEASE much help on this is much appreciated. i just didn't want to start tearing down and finding out it won't work. Thanks.
