Speedometer and Odometer stopped working!

I have a 1988 Trans Am GTA with all electric gauges and Odometer. I was recently driving the car and my speedo and odometer just quit. I took it to the mechanic and they said it was the VSS. We ordered it and the mechanic said they could not find where the part connected behind the dash and gave up on it. Cand someone help me find out what is wrong? All the other gauges work good, and I really want to keep every thing stock.

Welcome to TGO. For electronic speedos, IIRC, the VSS is located on the tail shaft of the trans. Simply plug and play.
