No problem at all. If you ever do more LEDs I highly recommend them, most of my bulbs I do are from them

Re: LED Dash lights

Yeah of coarse but not well tho, il turn the dim switch not even halfway down and they'll simply turn off Instead of dimming gradually until I reach the bottom of the dial

I do believe you have to buy a specialty bulb that is more expensive if you want a dimming ability that is fully functional. I have completely forgotten about a dimming dash since putting in LEDs haha.

I know it's hard to really see a difference between the two but there is a slight size difference.

It may vary for the shine through gauge style but I do believe the '86 has the reflective style gauges and if so, then the HVAC and shifter indicator are both a single 194 bulb.

yes, but red was very dim even with a 6 diode so that's why I added strips as well. colors like white, green, and blue will be very bright and should work great in the kick panel

Re: LED Dash lights

Ok, so.. I've read the entire thread, to include the technical link (showing LED's prior to the new led 194's) and the one thing I'm not clear on is this... Do the 194's from superbrightleds have dual polarity?? I ask because.. if I put these in and they're in backwards.. what a PITA to have to pull the cluster back out!! Thanks for any info you can provide. I didn't see anything on their site that references this issue.

Re: LED Dash lights

Mine were not dual polarity. I just held the cluster up by hand and reversed the ones that weren't lit up.

As far as I remember they were DP, granted this was done quite a while ago. If I have some time later today I will pull one and do a double check.

yeah, the phone had green illumination, It hasn't had power in years but I am tempted to power it up for fun. As for where I got that phone, it was in the car when I got it and don't have the slightest idea where it's from, I kept it in for a conversational piece as everybody notices it haha.

sadly not for sale, when I get home I can check for a model # to help you out if you want one haha. It's part of the cars character and I don't wan't to part with it. Besides, might be fun to tinker with and try to use it on a digital phone signal.

Re: LED Dash lights

I juwt ordered some leds myself, and before I get them im curious as to what everyone is painting. That way ill be able to everything in one shot whenever I recieve my lights. Very excited about this mod seeing as the stock lighting on the dash is very... lame. Lol

Not sure what you mean by painting. If you mean the actual cluster, I would advise against that. The gauges are measured out carefully and painting may cause an issue with a true reading of the gauge. If you really want something different than just the lighting check out a gauge overlay, they are relatively cheap, very easy to install, and come in a variety of colors.

Re: LED Dash lights

Have my gauges done with some cheap leds from eBay, Cody me under 10 bucks. Then i painted the reflective blue side of the gauge face with gloss white, improving the brightness of the leds.

I would recommend getting something with more led units. That one only has 1 led per light, where as the ones I used had 6 per light to give me the glow you see in the pictures. I also HIGHLY recommend getting a high gloss white paint and paint the panel the light reflects off of to give it a nice glow.

Okay so something like these, they are 5 led.
https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/miniature-wedge-base/194-led-bulb-5-smd-led-wide-angle-wedge-base/206/

Only problem is i want to do them over the whole car, so about 15 i think, which wpuld be a bit costly. Any cheaper ones thay arent junk?

Try ebay if you want cheaper

i went with
https://www.superbrightleds.com/more...edge-base/198/
Painted the back of my plate silver aswell. Got red as color, also did my dome light, shifter, hvac, and lights by the door.
Those are a little cheaper and perfect for light...

Re: LED Dash lights

C_sander, I like what you did with the blue LEDs on the gauges, I install blue LED for the footwells and under the armrest using the LED strips. the LED's on the door I have connected to the door pin switch so they light up when the doors open or the doom light is turned on, gives a nice soft glow.
I wanted to do the gauges.

You said the part was 194s mini wedges, when I look them up there are many options, do you have the part#? Did this just plug into the old bulb socket or did you have to do any modifications?

I wanted to do the gauges.

You said the part was 194s mini wedges, when I look them up there are many options, do you have the part#? Did this just plug into the old bulb socket or did you have to do any modifications?
Look for 5LED ones, as suggested above, they are direct replacements for "penut" bulbs

Re: LED Dash lights

I just did this to my car this weekend and I think it looks fantastic.
The pictures don't do it justice.
I highly recommend doing this to anyone who hasn't done it yet.
Only thing I wish didn't happen was the needles turned and strange colour. They used to be orange but now they are just a weird colour.

Re: LED Dash lights

your right that does look awesome. Did that blue footwell lighting last year and blue lighting under the armrest that come on only when the door is opened. going to add lighting for the rear seat lighting even thou no one ever sits there. The lights will be added to the under side of the front seats to cast the light to the rear seat foot well. replacing the carpet as soon as the car comes out of storage and I can run the wiring under the new carpet. looks like you also added lighting under the center dashboard vents. How did you get the lighting up to that spot?

Re: LED Dash lights

I saw your picture of the lights under the armrests and I'm thinking I may do that as well.
In my car there was actually a light already under the dash. It was a pretty much useless light as it wasn't bright enough to even know it was on unless you looked directly at it. I just put an led light in there

Re: LED Dash lights

under the arm rests is trickier as you have to remove the bezels (remember the fake screw heads), door panel, top rail and peel back the weathershield without trashing it. The arm rest is hollow so you can drill under it to feed the wire through the cavity into the door. I used small cable ties to tie it to existing wiring so that it isn't freely hanging and getting in the way of the glass and moving parts for the glass. Another point to consider is if you have to remove the armrests in the future, use a connector in the armrest so that if you have to remove it you can un-connect the lights and remove the arm rests vs. just letting them hang from the door

NOTE: if you trash the weathershield like I did don't get a replacement, get some vapor barrier from your local home depot and some 2 way tape or spray glue.

Re: LED Dash lights

I hate when a new conversation is started within an existing one but for the sake of the arm rest LED discussion this will come up. That weathershield in many cases gets ripped and thrown away. In my case it was ripped and duct taped on the drivers side and I trashed it on the passenger side. Could not find a OEM one and the aftermarket one I got was garbage. made my own with vapor barrier I already had. Use the existing one to trace the new one. if anyone needs one I traced extras let me know and I will mail you one

Re: LED Dash lights

I did a small go pro vid of my process of doing this. will hopefully get it up sooner or later if I can find the time. My first vid so its not the best but trying to show some that might not fully understand the process on how to remove the dash. I def didn't research enough, thus causing me to accidently break my speedo needle, and spend wayyyy too much time on it! very fun mod however my shift light doesn't seem to work any more!

Re: LED Dash lights

Went with the red LEDs from superbrightleds.com for my 88 iroc. This was a really quick and easy upgrade that looks great. Thanks for the wealth of knowledge, tips and tricks on this thread. If I get adventurous enough I'm going to try the LEDs under the arm rests once I restore them.

Re: LED Dash lights

Alright, finally convinced myself to put up some money and upgrade my interior lighting to LED. I've read through the whole thread along with a handful of others. Still have a few questions and things that didn't get a clear answer.

The quick background is I have a 1986 IROC. It has been stated that you need a pulsewits dimmer switch in order to dim LEDs and I'm pretty sure that my year does not have that. Where could I pick one of these up at?

Secondary to that question, it was also stated they make dimmable LEDs that work with the stock dimmer switch. Sadly the links I found were either dead or routed to a different page. Does anyone know of these bulbs and where to find them? I'm looking to order some from superbrightleds.com but there's no information like that on the site.

Third, I know I'll need at least a dozen bulbs for the swap. The old bulbs were 161 and 194. One post I've read stated it doesn't matter going to LEDS which ones you use and that 194s for all is fine as it was a voltage thing. Is this true?

Looking at these 194 5SMD for the cluster: https://www.superbrightleds.com/more...Specifications
