seat belt ratchet issues

my drivers side seat belt is having issues coming out. it started with just a clicking sound as i pulled my belt out the other morning. i let the belt go back in and pulled it out again but this time it stuck. it will retract but the ratchet catches when i try to pull the belt out. i pulled the cover and can get it to work if i hold the tab the engages the ratchet gear down. any ideas on how to fix this or do i need to get a new belt?

Hello darkhorse91!!

By what you are saying, it sounds like the inertia lock is engaging, check to see that there is still a weight hanging on the end of the tab!!

Got a picture?

Re: seat belt ratchet issues

no pictures right now but i'll snap one in the light tomorrow. definitely no weight hanging off the end of the tab but i also see no way to attach one. everything looks like it is in it's original location as the dirt is even across all surfaces except where I touched it. the bolt holding the mechanism in was a little loose but i have it cinched down tight with no change. also judging by the electrical connector for the unit it appears a PO has messed with the belt before. probably useless info but what i have right now.

Hello darkhorse91!!

A-ha!! Gotcha!! Your talking about the lap retractor, not the roof retractor!!

Okay, I'll give it a shot tonight.........and I'll see what I can come up with, no promises, but I'll give it a try any ways!!

Hello again darkhorse91!!

Pull the seat belt all the way out, and blow some compressed air into the retractor mechanism, there must be a load of crap (dust bunnies, hair *****, carpet fuzz, food, sand, etc) under the inertia lock plate/inertia weight!!

After this, spray a little bit of WD-40 into the ends of the belt spool, and around the ends of the inertia lock plate!!

I took one apart tonight, and it's a pretty simple device!! Not too much to it!!

As for the electrical connector, does your seat belt warning light come on when the car is running, and the seat belt is undone?

There is a contact switch built into the drivers side seat belt floor retractor, this tells the seat belt light to turn on/off!!

Try my suggestions above!!!

Let me know how it turns out!!
