Re: How-To: Modify LS1 Fuel Sender for 0-90 Ohm Use

here is the difference between the 2 fuel pump connectors, you can take out the 2 terminals for the sending unit and put them into your unit, second one is the unit itself, last is the bulk connector with the fuel pump wires and sending unit wires

Re: How-To: Modify LS1 Fuel Sender for 0-90 Ohm Use

$40 autometer unit: 240-33
$40 VDO unit: 0-90
$130 GM 25319676: 0-90

Has anyone actually installed one of these universal sending units in a plastic LS1 tank?

Re: How-To: Modify LS1 Fuel Sender for 0-90 Ohm Use

that's another question that I never got answered. I have no idea if it will work. I guess for $40 I could try to make it work or send it back if it dose not. I almost ordered the VDO unit. Looks like you get the float and arm as well as the sensor. lots of susses stories installing them in metal tanks. I have never found anything about installing them into a plastic tank.

Re: How-To: Modify LS1 Fuel Sender for 0-90 Ohm Use

Blake your question about the diffrent plugs was anwsered, you just missed it (as I missed it myself). The GM 25319676 (Grand Prix) sender kit comes with 2 fuel level senders in the box, both are 0-90 ohm. It doesnt matter what plug is on the end for the fuel pump connection. You can take a straightened paper clip and stick in the notch (third picture down in post #101) and pull the terminals out of the bottom of the connector and swap them with your OEM fuel pump plug harness. I went the GM 25319676 route and split the cost with another board member bring the cost down to $65. I Know that you (blake) found your solution, but I wanted to post this so that the next person who is trying to figure this out doesnt have to go thought the frustration and confusion that we went through. Additionally, I found one board member who did go with the $40 VDO universal sender, post #2.

In my case I bought a tank complete with pump and lines for 90 bucks shipped. The stock TPI pump wont support the required 58psi pressure for LS1 engines so regardless of tank swap you need to upgrade the pump. Secondly the factory fourth gen LS1 tanks ( NOT V6 however ) are also regulated at the tank thus eliminating the need for an additional fuel pressure reg. Thirdly the LS1 fuel tanks use a bucket assembly for the fuel pump that prevents pretty much ANY fuel starvation problems both in high G cornering and in high powered drag launches. Fourthly the LS1 fuel tanks come with the charcoal canister and atmospheric evap all in one so its a much cleaner way to fly so to speak. Fifthly they are plastic and wont rust out ever. Sixthly they are a HELL of a lot easier to re and re than a factory third gen steel tank is they are a major pita. Seventhly.... Need i go on?

Plenty of good to the swap.

All LS engines run the same 58-61psi fuel pressure. If you read the swap sticky its all listed in there. Theres even a link to buying the fuel kit and running your stock third gen. Theres a TON of good info in there probably all you'll need nowadays

Re: How-To: Modify LS1 Fuel Sender for 0-90 Ohm Use

Im istalling aftermarket gauge on my 91 trans am. All the wiring was off when i bought the car, so im putting a ls 5.3 on it. And most than likely im going to use the fourth gen fuel tank, with the fuel pump.does anybody know if i will have to do some kind of modification on my fuel sending unit for my aftermarket gauge to work?

Thanks for that camarotucker. But im going to use a 4th generation fuel tank, i dont have a stock fuel tank. But my question is, will this conversion posted here work on a aftermarket gauge, like a autometer gauge?

just ask yourself one thing, whats the ohm sweep on your aftermarket gauge? that will give you your answer to whether it needs to be modified.

How do you know which one to get? Do you pick the one that fits the Gen 4 tank pump unit ?

The 1996 S10 has a 0-90 ohm sender that should clip right in to that sump.

Which one of you is taking one sensor out then returning the kit?

Just got mine in from RockAuto.com and there was only one sensor in the box. Now I have to return and wait for a replacement to arrive.

So has anyone figured this out yet? I read a lot of talk on here but nobody really gave a really clean answer.

I have a 4th gen LS1 fuel sender (240ohms) going into the stock 3rd gen fuel gauge (90ohms). Right now my gauge cluster is out of the dash. Can I do anything to the purple sender wire to make the 3rg gen gauge work (adding resistors?) Or is my only option to go into the tank and mess with the actual sender? Resurrect this old post!

Stock gage does not work properly with 4th gen fuel sender because it will bias to the high side and never read EMPTY. That's a characteristic of the gage that cannot be changed with calibration resistors. The sender must be 0 Ohm to pull the gage needle to EMPTY. You need a 0-90 Ohm sender to get proper sweep of the gage at a constant rate.

This thread shows the sender swap in great detail, https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-...e-4th-gen.html
