Re: Rochester

Im from Beaver dams NY near Elmira. Im about 2 hours south of Rochester. I have been to been to NYIRP for test n tune a few times. Didn't make it this season however. I was wondering who else on here goes there. Also curious what times every one else is running there. and what kind of set up they are running. My best was 11.99 sec @118 MPH last fall with my 84 camaro. Im running a carbed 350 100HP nitrous and a wide ratio super T-10. Im looking to fix some rust and make some changes this winter to go faster and still be able drive an hour and a half each way to and from the track. Let me know whats working for you. also there is a cruise at the bigflats Wal-Mart every saturday about 5-6PM during the summer, and on friday nights at eldrige park in elmira. For the people that are from the southern tier area.

Re: Rochester

I used to drive 4th gens all winter for about six years, until one slid on some ice and hit a tree during the first week of snow two years ago. Decided to be practical and settled for a newer monte carlo. My 85 had no engine at the time so I never had to try driving it in the snow. I'll stick with the summer car winter car thing now.

Saw a camaro get stuck trying to drive through a parking lot today. Said to my brother "hey I remember that"

Re: Rochester

If mine were in one piece, I'd be driving it right now. This crap is crazy... Just went into Roch today and the lack of plowing out there is even worse than here in the county. Best thing I can say is to get some snow tires on your car, in the rear, if you're driving in this crap. I've driven mine in ice storms before (not fun at all)... If you can handle that maintaining control, you're pretty much set for just about anything. Heck, when I went to school in CT, there were a couple guys who had major problems just getting out of their parking spaces. I just dug out the tail of mine, started her up, and went . That's the good thing about snow tires. Of course, stating the obvious is needed... Just have to maintain about 10 sets of eyes everywhere because there are idiots everywhere and it's hard enough driving our old beasts in the snow without them.

Re: Rochester

i stole a set of snow tires off my buddies old f150 they will fit on my rims but i dont know if they will fit on the car. there a bit bigger than the summer tires i am using. there a 235 75 15 and my summer tires are 215 65 15's. and the back of my bird is completly bottomed out cuz of all the sand and bad shocks wich makes even less room for the bigger tires.

Re: Rochester

Take out all but 3 bags of sand so that you have room for the 29" tire diameter. Leave the tires slightly soft (about 30-32 PSI cold) and everything should work. I've never run more than 2 bags of sand in any car I've had in the winter.

I've lived out here almost 4 years but havent been to Eureka yet, but am hoping to take a drive down the coast this year (if gas prices dont skyrocket).
Yes Branchport is beautiful along the lake. Drove though there to Hammondsport in August when I was home.

LOL... Used to go to the Museum there for church picnics every year or so... Right down the road from me, practically.

More on topic: Anyone know of any decent junkyards that aren't on Car-Part.com that have any decent thirdgens in them? Now that I have access to a car again, I'm in the need of some parts that the yard I usually go to doesn't have (a passenger's fender, mainly). Also looking for info on a machine shop that possibly has decent prices (if I asked before, I forgot ) for block decking and head work (guide checking and work if necessary).

There is a junkyard right around the corner from me (like 5 mins) It's called J&J's Junkyard. It's in Clifton Springs, NY. Has a decent amount of third gens, I think there's about 10-15. Not exactly sure. I get my machine work done at a shop called Seeley's Machine Shop. It's in Flint, NY. Small business but they have done good work for me. They bored my 350, hot tanked it, installed new cam bearings, valve job on the heads, balance the whole rotating assembly, press the pistons on the rods, heads got all new valves, heads got machined to take more lift, and a few other small things. I paid $600 for it all. Didn't seem too bad to me, but I've never used another shop so I'm not sure.

Drake Engine, Ridge Road
Pro-Formance- East Ave
Farmer Automotive- Webster
FingerLakes Machine- Canandaigua

Pricing is fairly equal between them all since they all get the same hourly rate within a few bucks. Its just package type deals where the more you get done, some then come down in price.

Re: Rochester

Is that junkyard a pick-your part or a go-to-the-desk-tell-them-what-you-want-and-they-say-"we-don't-have-that" sort of place? Clifton Springs is well over an hour from here (halfway between Buffalo and Rochester, roughly) and I'd rather go to a pick-your-part than go to some desk only for them to tell my they don't have what I fully well know they have (like PJ's does in Caledonia all of the time even when I have my Car-Part.com printouts saying they have the parts in inventory). Do they, if you remember, have anything with a good windshield?

I'll have to look up some phone numbers and give some of these places a call...

I would imagine at least one has to have a good windshield. haha. You go into the yard and pull your own part. If you need something you can't get to the guys will usually get it for you or lift up the vehicle so you can get underneath. I'm not guaranteeing the parts they have but they have a good amount of F-bodies compared to the other places around here. They are priced pretty good too. Got a whole wiring harness out of a 91 RS for $15. I actually have to stop over there for a gauge cluster connector for the Corvette. (She's getting a 97' LT1 Camaro cluster.)

Re: Rochester

bucks used auto parts in hume ny is where i go all the time. he is really fair with pricing. i got a door for $50 from him. and many other parts. he curently only has 2 thirdgens in his yard an 85 trans am and my old 87 firebird parts car i sold him. both have good windshields and the 85 is still 99% complete. so it has fenders. his number 585-567-4112. but he almost never answers the phone.

another yard is Karsons in warsaw. they have several thirdgens there pricing is about the same as most yards. there number is 585-786-3930.

J&J definitely had good windshields. I was just there for valve covers (used too much sealant on my old ones and ruined prying them off). I think I saw maybe six camaros and three birds.

At one time J&J had my 84 bird and my 87 camaro there, I miss that bird. Also you can try calling one of those moblie windshield replacement places and make sure you tell them that's it's not going on your insureance, that will sometimes drop the price by half.
Also viper where do get your car inspected? I'ld like to dump some money in to the girl this spring and get it back on the road but the garage i last got it inspected at wasn't going to pass it because it wasn't the original motor set up

What year are we talking?

Upstate NY inspection laws in short.

Pre 1996, doesn't matter what motor is in it and up to 25 years old it must have a cat converter. There is nothing that states a motor can not be swapped only that it has a cat.

Over 25 years old, nothing matters.

Post 1996 a swap can be done, but you have to go through the hoops of retaining whatever car it came out of computer etc and have the vin for it. When they plug it into Albany's computer the vin is used for the donor car because now its tagged to your vin.

We've gone through the ringer obtaining and questioning everyone involved so one, the Monte I got passes and 2 my sons 98 Sonoma can receive a new motor to get rid of the 4 banger in it.

I get mine inspected at Curly's in Palmyra, Terry the owner is a judge and he and his son have been the ones that aided me in getting the correct info.

Re: Rochester

Pre 96 needs more than just the cat. Cat, EGR, PCV, AIR, char canister, thermostatic air cleaner (stock snorkel thing). http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/broch/c-50.htm

Went to an oil change place last year and after much debating between the managers, they decided it was "25 and older is exempt" not "older than 25" so I got out a year early and they didnt even open the hood. After wasting so much time fixing my locked up air pump.

Re: Rochester

I know what you are saying and what the link you posted stated.
But as a inspection station, only a safety inspection is required along with a quick visual pre-1996.
Safety inspections are for the most part dropped 96+ and just a light going over and a OBD scan is done.
Any place that does more than their checklist indicates is looking to drum up a extra buck and that's not on the checklist. They, the inspection stations don't really get squat to do one and to take more time than needed takes away from potential profits they could be making.

Here is another part from your link that says it all if you pay attention. Posted down bottom!!
There is no master list of what came on a particular vehicle as far as the list your link suggested what to look for. If you remove the devices cleanly, how can a inspector say it came on the car. We are not California and only cars sold in California are 100% that these items were added other states did not require such.

I don't want to be a dick here, but we have talked to the state reps numerous times and have gotten things in writing, plus the guy I go to is a sitting judge and has been for many years, I believe if of anyone, he would know the law and follow it!! There are heavy fines and loss of inspection license if these places are found to be in violation of the inspection laws.

Low Enhanced Inspection. A "Low Enhanced" emissions inspection is required for most other vehicles, unless they are subject to the OBDII test or are exempt from all emissions inspections. This inspection is required for all vehicles from and including model year 1995 and older, through and including vehicles that are up to 25 model years old, and that weigh 18,000 lbs. or less.

The above is for reference.
Low enhanced is a quick visual, not making sure it is operational.

I do also know that if this was really that important and on a list hard core a whole lot of cars would not be on the road in NY.

"The emissions control devices are examined if the vehicle was originally manufactured with them."

Sorry to burst your bubble but the T-5 isn't stronger than the 700r4. There's a reason the T-5 never came behind a 350 from the factory. Go T-56 you will not regret it. You will pay more sure but you will never have to take it out again (unless you go through clutches). I beat my T-56 and it takes it and has not skipped a beat yet! IDK what your budget is but you could waste a couple hundred on a bunch of T-5's or go spend some money for a tranny will take basically whatever you want to throw at it. You could be one of the luckey ones who say their T-5 holds up to their built 350 but the odds are against you man. Either way good luck!

a t56 would be nice i could get one cheep i just want to go to a standard tranny.. i have killed 3 700r4s with the 2.8 in this car. i have a very tight budget thats why i was thinking t5 but if i could get a t56 cheep that would be nice.

The problems are that T-56's aren't all that cheap. The cheapest I've seen around here is about $800 for one. The first T-56 i bought cost me $1200. The second cost me $900. Either way I love the security of having a strong tranny, and 6th gear! haha I have heard of ppl paying around $500 for one though. It's all about who you are getting them from. I have bought both of mine through the same guy. His name is Jason and he sells GOOD used parts... he's all over at LS1tech. Sells F-body parts all the time.

Being blunt here.
Your just going to fry clutches and or break input shafts on a manual.
700R4's can easily take 400 ft lbs and even with a more than mild 350 its hard pressed to be broken.

Driving like a *** jack by neutral dropping and full reverse to forward at speed and rpm and or launching with massive wheel hop is going to tear up anything you put in it and that IS what your doing.

My factory original 700R4 was yanked with 213K on it and still shifted fine with nice blood red fluid even though I had done several brake stands and power launches. Don't know what you did to yours, but mine was yanked when the TCC kept hopping in and out of lock and running at 3K down the road was ridiculously expensive. Couldn't afford the $3K rebuild, so I spent $1k and put in a T5. If you've been that hard on the 700R4, you're going to spend even more on the rest of the driveline if you put in a T5 (not just the clutch and the trans, but the driveshaft and rearend get more abuse with direct gearing).

i dont do reverse or neutral drops the car has enough issues already i aint gonna risk breaking her worse on stupidity like that! its valid to assume i am with my record of blown trannys but no i do not do that ****. and its a stock 2.8 with a blown headgasket it has no power for doing crap like that or burnouts or brake stands. and both the stock 700r4 and the second one just went going down the road the first one was climbing the hill out of Warsaw into rock glen and i lost overdrive then i started going up the next hill into Gainesville and lost drive and then 2nd pulled over tranny still full of fluid limped the rest of the way home in 1st going 5 miles an hour. 20 min drive home took over 2 hours but she made it home. and that tranny had 75 thousand miles and had a fluid suck and filter change 3 months earlier. second tranny 153 thousand on her going down the 400 coming back from buffalo and started dropping gears that one was a blown tranny line i guickly patched with fuel line and filled her and limped home most of the way in second till that blew then first then towed last 5 miles by a friend and i have no clue whats causing this tranny to slip it just started to a month ago full of fluid its only been in the car for 4 months and got new fluid and filter when it got put in like the others.. idk i am tired of paying 500 for a tranny every 5 months. i would rather spend 100 on a clutch if i blow one. so i am hoping a stick will give me better luck i have never blew anything in the truck but the clutch one time when we were pulling logs out of the woods with him and accidentally went in the swamp and got buried. u cant drag a 1500 pound log in muck thats above the bottom of ur doors lol and burnouts and that other **** r a waste of time gas and tires and parts i just want the car to get me were i gotta go and not keep breaking. i cant run the truck on the road he gets 7 miles to the gallon on a good day and the car gets 25-30 depending how well she wants to run. so i need to get her fixed soon so i dont have to put the truck on the road. maybe go to the strip once in a rare while after i get the v8 in but i doubt i will even do that much.

Re: Rochester

I'd like to hang out with you guys soon, so drop me a PM when you intend to get together. Although the car isn't an F-body, the powerplant is (when it actually produces power once in a while)

I drive a highly modded TPI pwered 400 block in a 1993 Caprice wagon.

Frankly, I could use some help from anyone close by with sone programming and tuning insight. Once again a PM would help to share phone numbers etc.

I imagine that wednesdays at the Log Cabin in macedon and thursdays at wegmans in canandaigua will still be happening this year. I didnt see a ton of thirdgens at either place the few times I went though. I hope to because it seems theres more hands-on wrench-turner thirdgen drivers than the corvette group. I feel like I fit in better next to a camaro than next to a c5/c6.

Hey Kodachi88, I've seen your car at log cabin a few times this year. I like the seats you have, they look to fit in pretty nice. I'll have to try to catch up with you one of these Wednesdays. I haven't got my car finished enough to get it out there yet, but I bring my son just to keep motivated.

I take it the shows are every Wednesday at the Log Cabin? Is there a fee? Also, do you know of a site that has been updated with the show schedules for this summer 2012?

Thanks in advance

Don't know about show schedules. I know the Syracuse Nationals are coming up, there is a ton of stuff there...

I've never brought in a show car, but I've never seen anyone collecting to get in. I am pretty sure it's free. There is music, food and drinks available.

Re: Rochester

Been a while since I've been in this thread...

If nobody in here has been following my build thread, I bought a metallic red 88 IROC roller off of a guy in Rochester back in April, and have been building it up with parts from the other car, which was sent full of scrap metal to Metalico in June. I'd had enough of watching the one rust spot on the driver's side continue to grow even though I had put rust protectant on it, and the IROC was the right body in the right price range with the right extra goodies (strut tower brace, wonderbar, SFCs, driveshaft loop) at the right time. It's at about 60% at the moment. As soon as I get the T-5 shifter I paid for the other day and a couple other parts, I will have her up to about 80% finished... Still need exhaust before I can consider her assembled.

So, begs the question, does anyone around here know where I can find a decent hardtop headliner? I don't seem to recall any good ones in Clifton Springs, the one in Bergen is falling apart (not just the material sagging, but the backer board is coming apart as well), and there aren't any in Alabama any more (as in Oakfield/Alabama). I seem to recall one on CraigsList recently?

You could try Camaro specialties in east aurora. He used to carry some third gen parts
