NYS Safety Inspection

Hi all,

Looking to pickup a nice 88 IROC Convertible, however the car has a check engine light.
Haven't had a chance to look at the car in person yet to review the code, but wondering NYS Safety Inspection would automatically fail because of the check engine light.
I'd assume it would fail with emissions, but since it +25 years old I'd just need a safety inspection

Anyone have experience with NYS Safety Inspections and check engine lights?
Appreciate the input!

Re: NYS Safety Inspection

I live in NY and have some experience with the inspection process. On OBD1 cars like ours the check engine light does not matter and as long as the guy doesn’t look to hard or is even old enough to remember what emissions stuff these came with you should pass with all that stuff removed as well.

The inspection our cars go through is the basic safety checks to make sure the car is road worthy and safe ( brakes and front end etc.)

If the car is 96’ or newer (OBD2) then the check engine light can give you issues at inspection time. Good luck with the car, the convertibles are cool.

Thanks!

Reviewing the NY DMV site, the safety inspection reviews exactly what you mentioned. Fingers crossed it goes well!

Re: NYS Safety Inspection

Dont forget the 7? indicators that each of the 7? is operating correctly.
Each must be clear ..........
Tech will tell you to do drive cycles to clear them to ready.
If not then you fail !

Went thru this with my 03 Impala that was under warranty.
After screwing around for weeks for one of the indicators to clear to ready
Im drivin around with bad stickers and dealer is clueless.

I called GM and b*tched that this is a new car under the 5 year emission warranty also
and it should be covered and PASS ! Gm techs were like duh!

So from a idea from a retired tech on the impala forums told me to have them update
the car computer with the GM Dealer Tech-2.

The service mgr looked at me like I was crazy and said it wouldnt work!
Took it to another Chevy dealer and they zapped it with the Tech2 and BOOM it passed!

They charged me $100 but GM sent me a check and a coupon for a free oil change!

Re: NYS Safety Inspection

BTW: My OBD 1 cars pre-96 if I have a check engine light I just pull the bulb.

NOBODY.........even the GM dealer has OBD 1 equipment.
(Unless the Tech as a OBD1 scanner in his tool box)
