Re: Post pics of third gen Race cars.
here is mine...Pontiac Power! Stock suspention/wheel well/springs/a-arms/using the factory gauges. ED Quay did the cage and picked the struts/shocks. I had a 477 in frist than a junk 467...next will be a 535 cid. Best ET was with the 477 it went 9.19 @ 147 MPH back in 2003.

Wow This thread is OLD! my car has changed quite a bit as Im sure everyone else`s has too. So I`m throwing up some recent pictures of this junk!
First Time into the 8.60`s
First time into the 5.40`s in the 1/8
Picture of the 498 with two kits
First 160 mph run (cracked the sleeved block too)
On the way to the first 8.5X run!!
(throwing the house at it!)
Lets see those updates!!!

Not all of us are making 8.50 progress... j/k that looks great.
I think I took a few steps backwards as my car has been tieing up jack stands for about 3 months waiting to sump my tank and install my 9 inch and new Tubular suspension.
I do have a feeling that after I get that stuff done it will be down hill from there.
Hopefully!

ive yet to put gear in the car. only a 4.22 with a glide.
4.71 is getting setup in the off season. i hope to see home high teens.
we'll see.

Re: Post pics of third gen Race cars.
i ripped the efi off shortly after i paid for my first tune. i realized that i wasn't happy with the car and wanted to make changes. i didn't like the idea that in order to tune the car, i was going to have to front like $700 into tuning equipment, or make another 5 hour trip to get another tune. i couldn't even change shift points without the help from someone with the equipment...so when the 4l60e tore up, and the bottom end of the motor came apart, i took the efi off and put a manual valve bodied transmission in the car. best decision i've made the entire time i've own the car.

Re: Post pics of third gen Race cars.
Well I might as well post some updates. I didn't get any action shots this year.
These first 2 pictures were taken right at the end of the 2009 season. The sun was dropping below the mountains and reflecting off the bottom of the clouds for some interesting lighting. Black cars are so hard to photograph. Flat black is even harder.
The next 2 pictures are at the end of the 2010 season. One of the car, the other of the engine.

Re: Post pics of third gen Race cars.
ya, as far as i know it's the only one. im kinda with ya on the "fast enough" thing, it's pretty much just mounted right there for chute mount placement purposes, so if i do decide to rock the wing i know it wont have to fight the chute. i'm still doubting the actual positive effects of these wings, at least on these cars, mines been 150+ and feels pretty planted....so i donno, feels kinda r*cerish to me ya know. Does look cool tho , sending it out to be powder coated

Re: Post pics of third gen Race cars.
Yes. I masked them all off to paint. It was difficult to mask and see the dual flames at the same time. It was hard to see the final result until the last pinstriping was done. The flames were first done in a white base coat to make them brighter. They then got a complete coat of yellow to cover all the white. Finally the ends were given orange with red tips. That was all painted with spray cans so the color transitions are not nice and gradual but they look good in pictures and from the grandstand. I finished off the flames with a light blue pinstriping. The painted pinstripes are not perfect but they enhance the colors. The flames on the T-tops were done the same way but the color transitions are a little nicer. They also don't have a dual flame pattern.
My flames will not win any contests for best paint but they're a hands on, DIY flame job at minimal cost. The main reason I did the dual flames is because I didn't want a white or yellow nose on the car. Having black flames over traditional colored flames solved that problem however if you see the pinstriping, you'll notice black pinstriped flames over black paint. It was the only way to accomplish the effect. When I put fiberglass doors on the car last winter, I had to redo the flames on the doors. The passenger side door looks better than the first ones I had but I'm still not happy with the final shape of all the flames. I think the licks are all too big but that's my own personal opinion.
As for that above wing, as much as I'd love a wing, the factory spoiler seems to do a fine job for me. I've never had a handling issue at the top end due to not enough downforce but then I'm only running in the mid 140's. I'm really not sure if a wing like that that would actually help me or not. My deck lid is a piece of aluminum held on with some Dzus fasteners. There's an air gap under the deck lid at the back so there's isn't a lot of stiffness if a lot of downforce is applied to it.
What about the wing struts? They're attached to the bumper cover. I have nothing behind the bumper cover so the struts would be attached to rubber. Just how strong would that be if the wing was applying a lot of downforce?
I like the Ed Quay wing on greezemonkey's car but I wish the side plates extended down more to reach the factory spoiler side piece mount holes.
A big wing like that would make my car look faster but most people don't believe it runs as fast as it does now. The low profile cowl and aeroscoop hiding the tunnel ram and BBC is what probably throws them off the most. Add in the race mufflers for a quieter engine and it's really deceiving. Those screens on top of the toilets are food sieves purchased at Walmart. They're a perfect fit. The dent in the top of the front one is from the scoop hitting it. That's how close the clearance is.

Sick Man, Sick....rock the wing! you got it so rock it Whats this thing gonna run, your guess..
I know many guys saying they dont have issues but I can say for sure I did at 150, dropped the wing on and no more white knuckles, I can drive thru with my pinkie finger on the wheel, almost takes the fun out of it but hey, gives me time to look at the gauges and other lane at over 160 mph now, to ed quay I say

Awesome pictures Stephen, very artistic and I love that launch shot from the rear.. whats your corrected et for say 600 ft above sea? I see in the goals thread you said its been 9.20`s..gotta be some deep 8`s at sea right?

Re: Post pics of third gen Race cars.
i've been emailing back and forth with racecraft about their new wings. they have some shorter ones that give you simiiliar effects for cars not going quite as fast. they told me (without me telling them how fast my car is running) that even a car running 120mph will benefit and will likely show small ET gains.

Re: Post pics of third gen Race cars.
I use a bunch of dyno correction formulas in my laptop to predict an ET based on weather conditions. Theoretically, at sea level in "standard day" conditions, the car "should" run a 8.85. It's unlikely I'll be racing at sea level any time soon so I'll just have to be happy to make HP restricted altitude passes. At least I'm not in Denver
Whenever I hear someone say how fast they run, the first question I ask is where? If you have a 12 second street car in Denver, great, let me shake your hand. That's a fast car. You have a 12 second street car in Florida or any other sea level track that can have air conditions below sea level (Mission BC in the spring and fall)? Big deal. Lets see how much it can slow down when it's at altitude.
As much as I'd love an 8 second timeslip, I don't want to travel to a sea level track or have to use a power adder to do it. It's pretty bad when I say 3500' density altitude is good air for me. If I want to run deep 8's, I'd need a much lighter vehicle. Build a tube chassis third gen or drop my engine into something like an altered.
Since I have no major expenses this winter (didn't break anything this year), maybe I'll consider purchasing a wing. I'll miss the factory spoiler. I was actually wondering if I could design a wing. I can get more sheet aluminum for the deck lid and redesign the lid to extend out to the chute as a wing. Fabricate the side plates and some braces for underneath. That way the wing and deck lid would be all one piece. It would be harder to take off but I never remove the deck lid anyway. The battery is in the back but I have charging posts mounted in the bumper cover.
How thick is the wing material? The sheet aluminum I can get is around .060" but I think that may still be too thin.

Re: Post pics of third gen Race cars.
OK. I think I just answered my own question. I was looking at the Racecraft and Ed Quay wings just to see how they look. Very nice. I know both are not available locally so I went and looked at Competition Engineering's universal wings which may be available locally. They're actually a Moroso wing. Right in the description it says "The main spoiler and spill plates are fabricated from .050" clear anodized aluminum" so I guess the material I can get is more than enough. It's just not pretty anodized aluminum. Nothing some paint can't fix.

Yep .050, Id do it, you have homemade everything else and if you have access to a brake thats all you need, well a shear would help as well. most of the major race car fab shops sell just the strut kits, ed quay does but you say you cannot order from him right?

Cross border shipping always sucks. I've been digging around. I think I can fabricate just about everything I need including struts. It'll be one of my winter projects. I should be able to make a good functional custom wing/deck lid for less than a couple of hundred bucks worth of material.

Re: Post pics of third gen Race cars.
I've seen lots of pictures to know what I need to do. Just haven't decided on the final style yet. I was really thinking about doing a fabrication write up. My wing will be a custom piece. Since my deck lid is already a piece of aluminum held on with Dzus fasteners with the factory spoiler attached, the new deck lid will be recut and extended out to incorporate a wing as all one piece. Unbolt the Dzus fasteners, disconnect the struts and completely remove the wing/deck lid if required. I don't think I'll design an adjustable wing though. I'll angle it up slightly to give a bit more downforce and make solid struts.
I'm still digging up more small parts.
