NMCA members in here please
Tried to search this section but my phones not letting me enter the field....
I have been seriously considering joining but honestly wondering what its all about. As I understand NMCA is kinda like NHRA except without all the Big names, sponsors, BS, loosed on restrictions and basically much more of a blue collard version of it?
Please correct me if I'm wrong. My junk would really only be able to fit into the True Street class at best, at least as far as my understanding from reading their 2014 rules & regs .PDF download...
Please tell me more

If you want to run in class racing then buy a rulebook and make sure everything you do to the car meets the class requirements. Makes no difference which sanctioning body you choose to run in.
The majority of people simply bracket race. Take your car to the track. Have minimum requirements for the ET you'll run and go racing. Bracket racing is a dial in race where everyone has an equal chance of winning. Speed means nothing. Spend whatever you want to keep the car running. Do whatever changes you want to make it go faster.
If you want to class race, it becomes cubic dollars. You keep spending more money to be the fastest in a heads up or index race but still need to stay within the limits of what the class allows.
I run very low 9's and I'm still fighting to get an 8 second pass. No contingency decals on my car. One sponsor decal for fuel. I have a simple gutted out race car made to go fast with all the requirements to go as fast as I do. I race under IHRA rules. NHRA hates the grass roots racers.
Doesn't matter which sanctioning body you want to race in. Safety equipment is still a requirement based on speed or ET. You won't see a low 10 second street car allowed down the track without a rollbar etc unless it's an outlaw track with no sanction governing it.
Consult with your local track as to which rules they follow. If they're NHRA or IHRA, joining the NMCA isn't going to help you unless you attend their events.

In IHRA, the easiest class for you to enter is No Box (Mod). Basic ET bracket race without throttle stop or delay box.
I run in Box (Top) but use a delay box with the transbrake and I use a throttle stop as a starting line enhancer. If I was trying to index race like trying to run a 9.90 index, I would be using the throttle stop to slow the car down.
Many if not all of those original classes you mentioned don't allow throttle stops to run the index so no matter how much the weather conditions change how the engine performs, you still need to find some way to mechanically run the index.
Again, if you want to class race you don't try to figure out what class your car will run in. You build the car to run in a specific class. Chances are if you try to fit a car into a specific class, it probably won't make the index.
