I was out looking at 3rd generation Firebird mainly TransAMs, Formulas and GTAs. It had to be under $1000.00, which was my budgetary limit. Just so happen that Craigslist had a few of them listed but needless to say the ones I wanted to view sold quickly and the others were owned by a bunch of youngsters who did not take care of them.
My sons and I were departing from viewing a 1987 Firebird that was doable but just not quite the type I wanted as it was not a letter car. My eldest said daddy I know where there is one that has been for sale and was still available.
I saw this raw piece of machinery and it was love at first site. It was a vehicle that sat for well over a year for no apparent reason except the youngster could not afford to drive it. Well through all of the dirt and pine needles we got a chance to view it, and I told them it had to run for the asking price of $800.00.
The poor fellas could not get that car to run so they said well we are sorry Mr. we are just going to have to "TOW IT OUT OF HERE". As we are moving in a couple weeks and it was our old roommates car.
I said hold up I will give you $500.00 for it as is. After a new starter, battery charge, replacement carb and much elbow grease it is up and running.

I have owned the 1987 IROC since 1991 and the 1990 IROC convertible since 2005.
Nice cars! I still kick my self from time to time for selling my blue vert. Are you in Washington?, if so you should check out the 3rd gen group on meetup.com and do some cruising before summer is over.
If the weather holds I plan to attend the Snohomish car show next Sunday. I work with a bunch of fellow car guys and they plan to bring the following - 1969 RS/SS 396 4 speed Camaro, 2008 Z06, 1970 SS 396 Chevelle, 1969 Nova SS, 1969 Fast back Mustang with a 421 stroker engine, 1964 Olds Cuttlas, 2005 GTO, my 87 IROC and my wifes 1990 IROC convertible. Another guy may bring some of his corvette collection ( 1969 all alluminum 427) etc.

Should be fun, anyone else in?
I'm going to do my best and try and make it down there? What time is it at? I don't plan to enter my iroc in the show. No offense to anyone who likes to enter shows, but I just don't enjoy watching people look at my car or maybe it's just them walking too close to it lol.
Anyways, I'm looking forward to meeting you and checking out your twin Irocs.
Cmeb4ubuy, I think you have to register before 9:00am. IIRC it goes from 11:00 - 4:00, no admittance fee for spectators. I will be going with a handful of guys I work with so I am not sure what time we will get there. Normally I would just park and walk in.
I have never put my cars in a show before and have no expectations of winning anything. I thought it would be cool to have a group of third gens at a show that is usually 99% 60's muscle cars.
Articwhite, that is one bad IROC! It looks like it was kept in a time capsule, straight out of the early 90's. What did it run back then and what will it take to get it ripping up Mustangs again?
Love the liscence plate frame, I had one made in 97 that sad " Have you smoked a Mustang lately".
ya i want to get it back up and Running.. it was 11.50's with out NOS.. and could drive on road trips.. car shows.. and fri and sat nite.. guys nite out's.. Miss it.
this one is a 383.
going to get it back out on the road soon... going to pull the eng and see what i broke.. then go back with a bigger 420 or what ever it is that has a tone or tork..
now days.. this one was a blast to drive..

Unfortunately, I won't be back in town until noon at the earliest. That would be awesome to have a whole line up of Irocs lol. From the moment I saw your garage with the "twins" I've been on the hunt for a garage mate for my convertible lol. Just the other day I found a '89 iroc hardtop with a six speed conversion for sale, here is a pic unloading it. Man, I'm officially addicted!

If your going to go with a completely new engine and intake, look into a stroker LSx engine. You can buy a complete GTO 6.0 litre with everything for around 6K from GM. Pull the heads, buy the LS3 heads / intake /TB / injector combo for 1100.00 from GM, sell off the stock LS2 heads / intake for 5-6 hundred and you will a rock solid brand new engine / injectors / wire harness etc. This combo should put down about 480+ HP to the wheels. Then add the NOS.
it was a lingenfelter 383...they liked the corvet mod D head's (alumnm)
i had a set of AFR flowed trick flows. REMEMBER THIS IS FROM 93 this stuff was all new.. super Ram intake accle 1000 cfm TB.
cam is not listed anyplace but this is what it is
mach roller
compcams 232/236 @50" 563/586 112 Lc
You mentioned the 3 heads that were avaible in the early 90's, which set was on the car when it made 480 RWHP? Must have been the AFR's with lots of port work?
If your going to build a new big cube old school SBC, look into picking up a set of AFR 210cc Eliminators. The reason I brought up going with a LSx engine and LS3 heads is that the LS3 heads bone stock out flow the AFR heads. You just need the LSx short block to use them.
the head's Trick Flow i sent to AFR and had them worked on with My cam spec's..
i would like to Keep them.. and use them with the New Cam.
they only have i think. 10.000 miles on them. but ill go over them checking things out..
with the new Eng 422 Cid yes 422.. thats what they tell me..
and 11 1/2.1 cam mech roller 254/260 621/627 lift. should pull good to 3000 to 6800.. im thinking about a Diff Intake..maby
Miniram is the intake for you, or a carb. If your old set up put down 480 to the wheels the engine was making around 600hp. You will need a set of heads to compliment the new 422, those old school Trick Flows aint gonna cut it.
Lingenfelters 383 Eng. that i had them send me. was rated at 475 bhp
and 490 ft/lbs of torque.. had to look at my slip from lingenfelter.
2500 to 6000 rpm. I was only running 12:20 to 11:70 ET 1/4 miles on pump gas.. (105pmh) 4.11gears 28tall MT streets
with the fogger spray i saw 1 pass at 10:34 at 124mph
i wish it was 600hp..lol
the nexed eng 422 cid im hoping for a bit More Hp and Torque.
going to turn it up to 65/6800 if i have to..they use a Victor intake and 850 carb and make 550hp with a smaller cam and heads..
what do you think..... should i rethink the new 422 cid?
Hell, go as big as your wallet will let you. I am just tossing it out there that you will need a set of heads with big intake runners ( 210cc) and an intake that will flow as well as the heads. Lingenfelter knows which heads / intake will work well with there short block.
Short block is the foundation, the HP is made with the heads/ cam / intake. The SR will make huge tourqe at low RPM's and decent HP, but if you use the old TF's you will be leaving alot on the table. What does Lingenfelter recomend for heads the 422 short block and SR?
they like the vet Alum D Heads.. the trick flows i have have been worked on by AFR. when new back in 93/94. before installing on my car..
if i use My old cam and intake Lingenfelter tell's me..it's going to have Monster tourqe 1600 to 6000.
but will sound a bit more stock..
but ya think i should get a new set of heads? whats out there for say $1300?
also i have to check to see what cam will fit (422cid How close to rods)
when spinning...thing. have been out of the Game for Over 8 years. any help would be fantastic..
the other thing. is now i can do a better header set up also.
my old headers are the SLP SS 1 3/4" (from 93/94)
No Smog (shop Fix. cut. tap & plug) with a 3" edlbrk cat back.
looking at the hooker 2210's
with sombodys Y pipe (a few are out there)
into my old cat back..
will have Cutout on ea side of the Y pipe this time.
The single 3" edelbrock cat back and SLP shorty headers will nueter a 427. You should really be running long tubes with a true dual exhaust.
As far as heads are concerned, you paid top dollar for a shortblock, you need a set of heads that will let the thing breath. AFR, period. Give them a call, or research the boards here for model of heads.
There is a member of TGO that lives in Canada that will beet anyones price on AFR's.
Keep in mind that no one stocks AFR's, you order them and AFR sends them direct to you. I bought mine from Jegg's but they shipped directly from AFR.
