hey guys i have a question about nitrious and how safe it is to run on my car i have no knock retard when i use good fuel. My car now has 76000 miles on it and has the original engine and transmission. I was thinking of barrowing a 75 shot and straping it on my car for a weekend at the track. I am fairly certain i can not engage the button in first because the tires would boil off. Should i keep an eye on my knock count under spray as well as my AF ratio. also what gains are expected from such a small shot. i only need about a 6 tenth gain to hit 12's. I was just wondering because i can not afford to blow up any thing at this time. should i wait till i can afford to blow it up? I know a 75 shot is reasonably safe but i just have this feeling that the tranny is going to fry and take the engeine out too.

I ran a 150 shot on a 230000 mile 305 for a long time with no ill affects. Retard base timing 2 deg and run some octane booster as a safegaurd. You will be fine.

I run a 200 shot on my mustang with 190K on a stock bottom end motor that runs 10.97 and have not had any problems for the last couple of years.

I run 100 shot on 92 octane and get lots of detonation retard and runs really rich.

Should I lower the fuel jets and run some higher octane?

Thanks for the input OBD.
My timing is set at 6 and I use a MSD6A.

Should I go less then 6 degrees advanced?!

ok maybe I'd like to change my answer now..

the MSD is great but you may have bad wires or plugs. test them with an ohmmeter to be sure.

as far as the timing, I was talking about total advance. You could have 30* total with 6* initial,
or you could have 40* total with 6* initial... so the base timing doesn't tell me a lot.

If you are too lean you will either see dark or silver specks on the insulator tips of your plugs, or possibly melt the ground straps off the plugs.
pull the plugs right after a nitrous shot and check them out. If they are dark or sooty then it's either extremely rich or the ignition is having problems.

How would I lean it out if it's too rich?
Would adjusting the fuel press reg work or just lower my press and not lean it out?

How about a hotter plug I'm currently using AC delco R43TS and they are dark and sooty.

Would lowering the fuel jet work?

I'm also using GMHP plug wires, the red ones with the cool bowtie's on them.

After my last couple of runs my throttle has been sticking. I have to tap the peddle as if to "kick the choke off".

Thanks for any input.

what carb are you running?
sounds like you might need a new carb.

I have a 305 TPI.

What I was trying to say is that it feels like that.

When I get off the freeway the RPM sticks sometimes up to 2k. I tap the throttle and then the R's go down.

Since I have a my nozzel mounted in the bellows between the MAF and TB.
I think the TB shaft gets sticky or something when the N2O and gas get sprayed across it.

yeah maybe the fuel did affect the lubrication of the throttle shaft somehow because the housing is aluminum and most gasoline contains up to 10 percent alcohol nowadays.

whenever it sticks at high idle, pull over and pop the hood to see if the throttle is actually sticking open a little bit. that would eliminate several other possibilities.

It does actually stick open.

A touch of WD40 helped for a day but it still sticks.

Maybe a new TB is in order? There goes a couple c notes.

I thought about that. If it still sticks after I pull it and clean it I'll have to resort to another spring.
