I miss the old TGO

I am a huge fan of TGO and I am not trying to **** anyone off however it seems like things have not completly changed for the better since the takeover. The site seems much slower overall. I hate having to open a new window to view images. And it is very frustrating when I go to get on and the site is down. on the old TGO we were always informed on the main page that X thing is being worked on and that the site may be down. I miss the updates I miss feeling informed and like I AM important enuf to know what is going on with the site I love so much! Maybe the people responsible could let us users in a little bit on what is going on? I understand that the site is always being improved opon but if it is going to affect us in a good way or a bad way let us know. That is all for now thank you for your time.

I have discussed the site being "slow" numerous times in numerous threads, as you can see by viewing this forum. There are two different issues at play. One is intermittent server load spikes, which causes some delays when requesting pages on TGO. Jason is working on this. However, this is not a continuous issue, but rather, an intermittent issue with occasional spikes. I'm around here often, and most of the time, the forums are responsive with little delay. The 2nd issue has to do with some user's CPUs being pegged at 100%, which creates a "choppy" feeling inside your browser (slow highlight/copy/paste and scroll commands), which is also something that Jason, Dave and myself are trying to narrow down. That will take some time as it isn't a bandwidth or server load issue in that case. It appears to possibly with the coding.

The site hasn't been down that much at all. The forums have been online most of the time. We've had some issues with the front page displaying blank/white pages recently. That is being looked into and worked on by Jason. However, the site itself hasn't really been down much, especially after the big transfer. The forums have been online during this time.

I've been on TGO for many years, I don't recall us users being informed of such details all of the time. In fact, the running joke around here was often how the front page wasn't updated for long periods of time. Occasionally Dirk would post an announcement if there was a major issue, but Dirk liked to handle that end of things behind the scenes, therefore, it wasn't publicly known about, so I disagree with you on how the "old" TGO kept more people informed. Dirk just liked to do this stuff behind the scenes.

That all said, you will see that I've been frequently present in such threads and have explained the issue, and more importantly, have informed you that we are aware and working on the issues when such issues occur.

I'm getting a bit tired of everyone here complaining all the time. This forum is not a sandbox for all of your dislikes, complaints, and criticisms, nor is it a place to post and assume that you are entitled to know everything that is planned for this site.

None of you here know what it takes to run a site of this size. If the forums go down you need to stop assuming that it was because the hardware is inadequate, because we don't have enough bandwidth, or because none of us know what we're doing. Sure, there are the occasional outages, every site has them, but for the most part, if the site isn't available (say, for the last 20 minutes or so), it's because I turned it off.

This section is for people who are posting suggestions (for example, "I think we should have a section for...") and who are reporting current problems with the site (for example, "When I click on ..., ... happens."). If you are no longer having problems, don't post. If you are having problems, check to see if there is another thread about the same topic. If there is, don't start a new one and don't make a "me too" post in the existing thread unless you have something useful to add.

To conclude, complaint threads will be locked/deleted at our discretion. Please do not post here unless you have a constructive suggestion or are currently experiencing a technical problem.
