Anza Borrego cruise info Sat April 26th

As I mentioned at meeting last Saturday, I've heard that the city of Temecula is cracking down on all sorts of equipment violations to the extent of even getting tape measure out to measure the height of handlebars on choppers. I think discretion is a good idea. We don't need to get hassled for noisy mufflers, no front license plate, or whatever else they might find. It was decided at the meeting to try to find an alternate route to stay away from Temecula.

I've found a new route and am going to post it here as well as on SC3G and to SC3G shortly.

The cruise is set for Saturday April 26. I propose we meet for Breakfast at 9:00 am at the Denny's in Perris. The address is 580 E4th St. in Perris, Ca.

If Don is going and we set up a meet and leave from his shop, my suggested route from down in the OC is to take the 55 to the 91 to Corona and then take the 15 South to Cajalco Rd. to the 215, then South to Perris.

After breakfast, we will continue South on 215 to 74/79 highways toward Hemet. In the center of Hemet we will turn right on State Street and follow it South to the end where it makes a 90 degree left and becomes Cactus Valley Road. About 1-2 miles up Cactus Valley Rd. Sage Road goes off to the right to the South. Sage Road is also Riverside County Rd. #3. Sage Rd ends at Highway 79 out of Temecula East of Temecula. We turn right on 79 just North of Warner Springs and take 79 to San Diego County S2 to S22, Montezuma Valley Road which goes over the hill into Borrego Springs.

We will then go through Borrego Springs on Borrego Springs Road to Yaqui Pass Road. That road ends at Hwy 78, about 5 miles from the junction of Yaqui Pass Rd. and 78 San Felipe Rd goes off the the right which is also S2 again. We can then either retrace our route, or turn South a couple of miles on 79 to junction with 76 and take 76 to the 15 freeway between Escondido and Temecula. At that poiint we can split up and head back by whatever rout you would prefer. Temecula cops won't bother us on the interstate, so we should be fine as long as we stay out of Temecula.

By the way, if anybody from the San Diego area would like to meet up with us, but doesn't want to go all the way to Perris for breakfast, we could arrange a meet at the gas station at Warner Springs. From our breakfast stop at Perris to Warner Springs is 63 miles by our route. Mapquest says it is a 1 hour and 8 minute drive, but I think we should allow 1 1/2 hours for that portion of the trip.

If anybody from San Diego would like to join in, please post to this thread or the one I'm going to put up on SC3G. If anybody wants to give me a call to facilitate a meet up anywhere, my cell number is 562-965-8219, or you can pm me with your number if you want to.

For anyone planning to make this cruise, either post to this thread or the one on SC3G. I don't need a "head count" so much as a "car count" so I will know how many maps to print out for distribution at breakfast. It dawned on me as I was posting this same thread to SC3G that I should get a "head count" for all of those planning to make breakfast at Denny's so that I can call in for a large party reservation a couple of days early.

If you went to the railroad museum, you wouldn't get to the cruise.

Perris is near Moreno Valley in the Riverside area and you can reach it heading South on the 15 Fwy. If I can get my car running, count me in. The ills of DIY auto repair are growing on me.

Klawson, use mapquest.com I put the address of the restaurant in the original post. The address for Don's shop is in the first post on the Third Gen Friendly Companies sticky at the top of the page. Just put in your address and the destination address and they will give you directions with a map that you can print out. From West Covina the 2 ways to get to Perris would be to either go Esat on the 10 and switch to the 215 when it splits off in San Bernardino and follow the 215 to Riverside ( about 5-10 miles or so) to the interchange for the 60/91/215. Take the 215S/60E to the top of the hill and when the two freeways split, stay on the 215. The D street off ramp is probably 5 miles or so past the 215/60 junction at the top of the hill. Be aware that the grade up the 215 from Riverside to Moreno valley is often slow going because of truck traffic. The other way from West Covina would be to take the 10 East to the 15 South, go South on the 15 past Corona to the Cajalco Rd off ramp and take Cajalco East to the 215. Get on the 215 South and you will get to D street off ramp in less than 5 miles from when you get on the 215. Stay on D street to 4th Street (a couple of blocks). Turn left on 4th Street and it will take you directly to the on ramp for the South 215 after you pass a wye where Redlands Blvd splits off. About 1/2 block before the on ramp to the 215 South the Denny's will be on the right.

Don's shop is in an industrial building complex in Orange between Batavia, Struck, and Katella. Look up his address and use mapquest. I can drive right to his place, but I can't give you directions because I don't remember the names of little streets around his shop.

Re: Anza Borrego cruise info Sat April 26th

Funny, no car I've owned in the last 20 years living and driving in Temecula has ever had a front license plate, most of my cars and bikes have had pretty loud exhaust and I've never *ever* been hassled, nor have I heard a single complaint about others being hassled. If you're driving like an a-hole then you're going to get pulled over, but by no means are the cops out to nail people on equipment violations. Where are you getting your information?

I should add more information: the reason that a rumor like that strikes a chord with me is that I own a restaurant property in the heart of Old Town Temecula. The businesses down there are dependent on the classic/collector car and hot-rod culture. If there is any truth to that rumor that the local cops are driving people away, thus stifling the local businesses, then it is something I will take to the city council immediately. Pardon me from being skeptical, but I've got a pretty good idea of the culture here and your statement is the absolute first I've heard that's even hinted at the cops here being unfriendly. Rumors like that (true or false) hurt real people and real businesses.

I'm trying to get the day off! It sounds like fun.

It sounds like fun, any route we take!
Not like we'd be doing anything illegal, and a license plate ticket is only $10 and I've only ever had ONE. Only because the rear plate light was out. I don't think they'd really bother us?

$10 IF you have your front plate and a means to attach it according to the CVC. Need to have it inspected and signed-off by an officer.

If you don't fix it and just pay the fine, you're looking at around $30. Unless they've rasied the fine.

In Glendale it was $40 just to pay the fine, but I put mine back on and it went back to the $10 like you said.

I really want to take it off cause I think its ugly. I just dont want to get a ticket again.

The problem in Temecula is not a rumor. On Sunday, April 6, the wife of the contractor working on my house was returning home from church with a couple of their kids. She decided to go through old town instead of taking the freeway home. The police had set up a road block in front of the police station and were checking every vehicle that passed by. Her vehicle was impounded for expired license tags. Fortunately their 3 year old and their disabled 6 year old were at home with their dad at the time. She watched the police measuring the height of handle bars on motorcycles, and generally looking for any reason that they could site vehicles they were stopping. It may have been a one time thing, or it may be an ongoing thing to either prove the need for the new police station they want to build or a way to pay for it. I just don't see the sense of tempting them to decide to crack down on us. It may hurt business, but I'm not going to take any chances with them. I never said the police were impolite or in any way threatening people except to enforce laws. I think you need to take this to the city counsel immediately. My youngest daughter is getting married in Temecula in June, but I won't take my 3rd gen to Temecula for the wedding or for the foreseeable future when visiting relatives.

Another thing to consider is getting the ticket signed off.
Chris got a tinted window ticket by CHP in Bakersfield and to get it signed off he would have had to drive to Bakersfield , the CHP here would not sign it off.
So he left the tint and paid the higher fee, which is what they want you to do anyway.

That's interesting. You'd think CHP is CHP. They're all State Police.

I've been nailed twice for no front plate. Once in Hollywood and once in Santa Moncia/West L.A. Both times by Parking Enforcement who tagged my car while it was parked.

The first time, I just paid the fine. The second time I ordred new plates so I could get it signed off. Drove over to the local CHP station by my house and they took care of it.

I do know with traffic citations, different counties have different requirements. Must have been the case with Chris.

Ah, just as I thought. Drawing wild conclusions based on third-hand information. Fair enough. Can't take that one to the city council! Enjoy your cruise!

Re: Anza Borrego cruise info Sat April 26th

1. Temecula doesn't have it's own police department. The city contracts its law enforcement from the county. If she got her car impounded, it was by a Riverside County Sheriff.

2. That being said, there's also no police department in Old Town.

3. I can't speak for what happened on 4/6 since I've been in Europe for the last month, but I can tell you that there are frequent DUI checkpoints in Temecula.

4. Come on... expired tags is a little bit different than lowered cars and front license plates missing.

If you ever decide to cruise through Temecula in you're third-gen, you'd be welcomed by both law enforcement and the local people. Just make sure your tags are current

I won't argue on the expired tags issue. She could have been stopped anywhere for that issue and they should have had the license tags up to date and there would have been no problem. My contractor is a personal friend as well and when he went to pick up his wife after the car was impounded, he noticed that the sheriff's dept had set up a road block of some sort by the sub station and had a bunch of deputys measuring the height of handlebars on motorcycles. He told me that they are trying to get a new Sheriff's substation for downtown Temecula. I don't know if they are doing something to justify the new building, are raising money, or what their reason for setting up a road block was. I've visited Temecula often on weekends and have noticed that old town's primary income seems to be tourism on weekends, so it seemed like doing something like that is "biting the hand that feeds them."

Re: Anza Borrego cruise info Sat April 26th

I stand corrected... they are now listing an Old Town "police storefront" on their website...

I leave town for a little while and look what happens. You are right that Old Town depends on tourism. If that kind of thing is going on, I can assure you that there is already an uproar over it and it will be discussed with the City council before I even get back.

In my long experience in Temecula, I've never seen anything like that happen. I apologize if I came across badly. I hope you can understand how sensitive a subject this is for me.

Typical small town BS
They want the tourist money, but not any minor irritants that go with it.

You are lucky you arent in Tustin, They are slowly but surely chasing out all the Mom & Pop business' for "upscale national dining".
Upscale of course means a $12 steak is priced at $24 with short term shoddy service.

Re: Anza Borrego cruise info Sat April 26th

I can understand, this desert cruise is becoming an annual event for the club because it is a great cruise for the winter months when the mountains may be snowed in. Temecula is a greeat place to meet to start and end the cruise. I hope by next year things will have settled down to the point that we could again use Temecula as a place to start and end the cruise. I also hope that this year's cruise isn't too warm. I had hoped to get this organized for Feb. or March this year, but I missed the Feb meeting due to my grandson having his birthday the same day as the meeting, and then I was sick most of march. My wife brought me some "nasty bugs" from the hospital where she works this year!

So he left the tint and paid the higher fee, which is what they want you to do anyway.
Have they changed their policy? When I got my tint ticket in 1999 I was in San Diego on the 5 freeway. I was able to get it signed off at the Santa Ana office.

Re: Anza Borrego cruise info Sat April 26th

I'm not sure, Kevin. At Carrier I lost a a license sticker for the service truck, and it took the DMV about 3-4 months to replace it. In the meantime I got a ticket in Northridge the same day that the new sticker finally arrived at the shop. I had to go with the truck to Northridge to have it signed off. Of course, if it is a county sheriff or local police that gives you the ticket, you would definately have to go to the local jusidiction that issued the ticket to get it signed off.

Yep, I think it depends on the juristiction that gave you the ticket. State, county or city.

I believe Chris' was in 2000.
I remember years ago it didnt matter who issued the fix it ticket any cop could sign it off.
Thats probably changed with this 4x fine if you dont get it fixed.

I heard a guy a few months ago saying he got stopped and didnt have his currant insurance card, but he had currant insurance, and he had to go to court and show the judge he had insurance.

Re: Anza Borrego cruise info Sat April 26th

I think we need to get this thread back on topic. I'm going to need to go through this thread to get car counts and people counts the week before the cruise.
----------
Lets get this thread back on topic. I need to go through it the week before the cruise to get a car count for maps & people count for breakfast. I'd rather not go through numerous pages of off topic posts to get totals. I've checked back on the SC3G thread and so far no one has posted to that thread except Lon with a correction of an oversight I made.

According to Google, 55 minutes from the Honda Center to Denny's in Perris. And at that time in the morning that's about all it will take you. At $4 per gallon, that puts you around $40 - $50 up on me.
