SCTPI Dyno Day May 15th
On Saturday May 15th the SoCal TPI Organization will have its first official event, a dyno day at MD Automotive in Westminster (our usual place)
MD Automotive
7281 Westminster Blvd
Westminster, CA 92683
714-891-1113
Members are welcome to come down and check out how we build TPI engines to put down 350+ HP to the wheels and rival the LS1 crowd. I'll explain how I tune them if anyone is interested.

Oh really? I might be down to go and have you dyno tune my car. With my mods and a stock chip I put down 198hp and 266 in tq. I think we can squeeze in some more.

You guys mind if my almost stock LS1 shows up & dynos for comparison purposes? How much does the dyno cost? How many pulls?

ZexGX, normally it would not be a problem but most of us have modded our cars and are getting them tuned for the Invasion. So each car will spend some time on the dyno getting tuned and I don't know how much time if any will be left at the end of the day. I'm not in charge of the event so I don't have the last word on it. I believe the price is around $75.00 per hour on the dyno regardless of the number of pulls.

Re: SCTPI Dyno Day May 15th
We're still in the infant stages of this group, but the best way would be to show up and introduce yourself. Our next official meeting will be Saturday June 12th in Orange, CA. See the "Are you a fan of the TPI engine?" thread for details.
Sorry, this is a SoCal TPI event and is only for members with TPI engines. (except for Greg, as he got hosed at the last dyno day when we ran out of time)
I dont know if we will have time for more than 5 cars right now. Allen and Raul, consider yourselves on "standby."

No worries! I might show up just to see the results. It's nice to see some fast third gens for a change.

Getting dyno pulls without tuning or being able to learn about combos that relate to our cars is of little value. I'll stay with the SoCal TPI group.

Any one who wants to stop by to ask q's, we don't bite.
This isn't DUB this is just old skool hot rodding...
I have the budget-est, of all, no "secret mods..."
I have mildly ported corvette heads, non-siamesed runners, non-welded up intake manifold, (if you follow the TPI board)
Last time made 330 rwhp and 370 tq on a 700r4 auto;
just had a tune up and other electrical issues on a 20 yr old car! Looking for 350 rwhp...

WOW, what an interesting day. We had some cars putting down some serious numbers but I was not one of them. In fact I went backwards and well be hard pressed to even match the times I put down at the Invasion last year. All I can say is our 3rd gen cars will do quite well at the Invasion.

Re: SCTPI Dyno Day May 15th
Congrats to Bill, who put down some really good numbers! I had to leave early, so I missed the last couple of people...
(I looked up my last known dyno, which was way back in Jan of 09?? I made 321 HP/377 TQ, back then, not 330 HP.)
The changes have been a new fuel pump, 343's, and fresh spark plugs.
I kept getting a weird looking dyno graph...
So far, all we could determine was that the problem is in the car, not the dyno.
Despite that, Kevin was able to do some tuning.
I gained about 25 TQ but my HP remained about the same.

Re: SCTPI Dyno Day May 15th
Yea, congrats again to Burnout Bill, putting out the big numbers with the original block and rotating assembly that his car left the factory with!! Unreal. Somebody did his homework.
Another nod goes to Hot Rod Julie, the only car to make over 400 lbs/Ft of torque! This one on a used Vortec Truck block. Yowza!
Raul was another winner, picking up a handy 45 HP from tuning! I hope you're wearing fresh diapers when you nail that thing next time. I think you're gonna find out that your tires and breaks are not near as good as you remembered. :-)
My mysterious oil "fart" stopped leaking, and the car ran fine going home. We did get the power output headed in the right direction, but we didn't get it sorted before it had it's oil tantrum. Maybe next time...or the time after that...
A very interesting day, everyone continues to experiment, hoping for a home-run, but mostly getting base-hits and spectacular strike-outs. Finding out what works is really more fun than finding out what doesn't work, but you don't get one without the other.

Well of what I was there for it was fun. I wanted to stay till the end but I had to go to work. I must say great job guys. Their were a lot of awesome cars there with great power. It was cool to finally get to go to a thirdgen dyno day.
Also, is thier any chance their could be another dyno day before the invasion? I really want to a dyno tune on my car to help me at the track. It will be my first time on a 1/4 mile track and I want to make it a memorable one.

Re: SCTPI Dyno Day May 15th
All in all, it was a great day at the dyno.
I didn't make any improvements, but I may have determined a 3 1/2" catback is not needed and a 58MM throttle body doesn't do anything either, at least on my combination. It did the same on the 58MM and the 52MM.
I actually was down a few ponies and a little TQ.
But otherwise it does look like it will be real interesting at the invasion.

Re: SCTPI Dyno Day May 15th
Let me 2nd or 3rd the congratulations to BurnoutBill, Troy and Julie. Bill and Troy are a solid 20 to 30rwhp over my combination. The have the potential to make it into the 11 second bracket. The way things look I will have to wait until I get the new motor in before I can start thinking of an 11 second time slip. To much power has been lost. Can't wait for the Invasion to see the Third Gens run. I think our cars will make a good impression and having some people scratching their heads.
Edit: Troy that is good news that your car stopped leaking oil.
Edit: Did I say I was disappointed in my dyno results.

Troy made 392/371
Julie made 324/402
We now have a new "King of the Dyno"
Bill put down .....drum roll.......397/355
and folks, that's a stock block 350 w/heads cam & intake.

"and folks, that's a stock block 350 w/heads cam & intake."
....and Dyno Don short tube headers.
Troys numbers most likely would have been a little higher as he was in the middle of the tuning when the oil leak occured and things came to a halt. I think Troys and Bills cars may have been able to make 400rwhp with more time on the dyno and real fine tuning.
A day later and I'm still weeping over my dyno numbers.

Re: SCTPI Dyno Day May 15th
I would think that a specific combination would not really change from one dyno test to another if no adjustments were made to it. On the other hand, atmospheric conditions would effect the output of the engine. Does the dyno measure air density, oxygen content, or other atmospheric factors that would effect the output?

I think I have a greater issue. My engine seriously overheated AGAIN (for the 5th time) in traffic going back to Dons' shop because both fans stopped working again in traffic. By the time I realize whats' happening and get it off the freeway, temp is maxed, the engine is laboring and the overflow bottle looks like the volcano in Iceland, only hotter. I believe the oil fart out the back of the manifold is because the rings/bores are now so ruined from overheating that when the cylinder pressure really goes up, it turns my bottom end into an air compressor! :-(
Welcome to my world Alan. I got schooled by a stock-block 350 with a smaller cam. The only saving grace is that Burnout Bill is a really good guy and very knowledgeable, and worked hard for his results.

Thanks for all of the complements, but we all know the dyno can be very "moody" being generous then stingy from time to time. My combination was built with a lot of input from nearly everyone on the boards, so many thanks to all. Don, could you post the graphs from the day, please? Thank you for your time.
